View Full Version : How is the Denver D going to stop VY?

Going into the game against the Titans, the most crucial part of the game is going to be how we defend Vince Young. He is not going to put up great numbers, but he makes the big plays (passes and runs for 1st downs) when he needs to. I've watched a few of his games this season, and haven't been overly impressed, I know Denver has struggled in the past with getting running QB's contained. How do you think Bates and Shanny will game plan to stop the Titans offense, especially VY?

Can we put a spy on him?

Like Jacksonville did yesterday, make him play QB not RB.
Hes Mike Vick pt2.
8-man box the entire game(hopefully Lynch is back in the lineup) and force Vince to throw at Champ and Dre.
Hes never faced a CB tandem of this caliber before.
Remember Leinart last season? Vince will be arrogant as well and attempt to challenge Champ, and he will suffer dearly.

I've watched a couple of titans games, and it IS NOT Vince who we need to stop. It's the Titan's defense, and particularly STs that we need to quiet. No team has won more games because of ST than the Titans. I gues if your QBs stat line is usually 12/28 113yds 0TDs 2INTs, you have no choice but to figure out other ways to win.
If we play solid on ST and put up 20+ we'll have a great chance in this one.

I think we need to have someone shadowing Vince, I'm not sure who that is though. Maybe Abdullah?

Keep in mind, our offense will have to score on virtually every drive and get ahead of the titans on the scoreboard to force Vince to pass.

Was going to be my answer exactly. Just don't let him run the ball. My guess is we will probably blitz him quite a bit as well.

Yes. Stop the running game and punch VY in the mouth, early, hard and hopefully often.

That would just make him confused and angry. You wouldn't like him when he's angry.

I was thinking a spot a bit lower since that seems to be a targeted area about which the refs don't pay a whole lot of attention......

The difference between Vince last year and Vince this year is that Chow and the coaches have convinced him to look pass more before running. His runs are more by design and less ad-libbed which, I think, takes away from his effectiveness.
Forcing Vince to pass is like forcing Jessica Simpson to act. It's not what they do best. Young's receivers are not as good as last year. Blitzing Vince is a mistake because you really don't want him to abandon the play and run. That's where he's most dangerous.
If I were Bates, I would mix up the coverage schemes, blitz only in specific situations where his runs won't hurt you (like 3rd and 25), have a spy whose only job is to shadow Vince and man up Champ and Dre on the outside receivers frequently as they won't need help.

I am not looking forward to the around-the-clock suckfest of Vince Young by the MNF crew. Kornheiser is going to call him the "LeBron James" of the NFL while Jay Cutler is outplaying him on the other side, just like he made Matt Leinart look silly last year.

We can't play small-ball this week. That's the Titan's game. We'll need to try to open it up early. They're built to keep scores low and win games with defense. The best thing we can do is to put Young in throw-only situations as early as possible.
Easier said than done, but that's how I think we'll get it done.

Anyone know the status of Haynesworth. It would be nice to see that dogpile on the sidelines.

The big problem with defending VY is when you concentrae too much on him, Titans run game will kill us. I think Titans OL is capable of dominating our DL and controlling the clock like Jags did. The best way to stop them IMO is to score early and take a lead. I think that will force Titans to try to pass more.
I worry that its going to be similar to the Jax game.

DJ Williams might be fast enough to keep up with him. Let him spy on VY and make sure he doesn't take himself out of position.

You don 't. You concentrate on stopping White, Brown, and the running game. Make VY beat you. Their reveivers are crap, VY is crap throwing hte ball, and this year he has been castrated by the coaching staff as far as taking off downfield. The biggest concern is their defense. Just play our game, play solid special teams, and stop the run. Make VY beat you, because he can't.

Since White is a power back without much deep speed and Young doesn't throw that well stacking the box makes sense. Hopefully we have Lynch back because I think in this game we need him.

Simple put 11 guys on the line and don't worry about his passing ability.

Will know more on Haynesworth tonight. Also, White is dinged up. They may have to go with Chris Brown and Chris Henry.

Put them in a 14-0, 17-0 hole early and make him throw. Keep the pressure on by having successful scoring drives. Hard to run when its 24-3.

Getting up on them by at least a TD early is key. They don't come from behind very well.
If Haynesworth is ready to go (and he should be) it'll be hard to generate any consistent offense. They get such a terrific push into the line with him in there.
If we make them abandon the run, we will have a much easier time with VY. His receivers aren't doing him any favors and the coaches have him handcuffed from doing whatever he needs to do to move the chains. But if he were to ever disregard what they are telling him, he'd be unstoppable.
I'll say it right now, if we don't turn the ball over against that D putting them in good position on offense, we'll win the game.

Doesn't Young have something like 1 TD and 8 INTs in the last couple of games?

His WR's are dropping a ton of balls. It's either that or they are running the wrong route. It's a real problem. 6 dropped TD's in the past 3 games. You can see VY's confidence going down with every one.

I dunno about blitzing him....seems like all of our blitzes either get picked up, or our guys just harmlessly blow right through the pocket.

Hope Denver can slow the running game down some and score some points because the Titans sound pretty tough defensively. Probably going to be low scoring so this would be a nice game for Cutler to not throw an interception as the turnover battle is going to be huge.

Like many have said in this thread, one sure a$$ way to stop Vince Young is to make him pass.
But in the past outside containment has worked well against mobile QBs. Basically you send your DEs out wide in the pass rush and ask the DTs to push upfield so the QB only has two lanes to rush through where the OLBs should have containment but it comes at the cost of sacrificing the run.
Our first two drives HAVE to net some points. The longer this game stays close the better it is for Young as they can mix the run with the pass and Young can pick his spots on when to run. If we get them in a hole early then it forces them to be one dimensional and in that case it's much easier to handle the RB who can throw the ball.
I think we moved the ball well on a good KC defense at their house but for the love of football we need to cut down on those penalties. Hopefully Marshall and Scheff are healthy because we've got a nice mix in our passing game with them.
I won't even discuss the Haynesworth problem until I'm sure he's over his hamstring and ready to play.

USC tried that in the Rose Bowl. Happened in the second quarter, one d-lineman gave him a squeeze down there after Young threw a pass. No flag. Young doubled over and handed off for the next few plays but then shook it off and we all know what happened.
