Don Shula likes the Patriots' chances of going undefeated, but the Bill Belichick-inspired spying scandal has clouded Shula's thinking when comparing New England with his unbeaten 1972 Dolphins team.
"The Spygate thing has diminished what they've accomplished," Shula said in an interview with the New York Daily News. "You would hate to have that attached to your accomplishments. They've got it."
Belichick was fined $500,000 and the Patriots were fined $250,000 and lost a first-round draft pick for videotaping the Jets' opposing sideline during the teams' season-opening game.
"That tells you the seriousness or significance of what they found," Shula said, according to the Daily News. "I guess you got the same thing as putting an asterisk by Barry Bonds' home run record.
"I guess it will be noted that the Patriots were fined and a No. 1 draft choice was taken away during that year of accomplishment. The sad thing is Tom Brady looks so good, it doesn't look like he needs any help."
The way the Patriots have been playing, Shula and the '72 Dolphins might find themselves answering more questions than in past years about whether their record will stand. New England improved to 9-0 on Sunday by beating the previously unbeaten Colts (7-1) in Indianapolis.
There have been serious runs made at the Dolphins' record before. The 1985 Bears started 12-0, then lost on a Monday night to a Dolphins team coached by Shula. The 1991 Redskins started 11-0 and the 1998 Broncos and 2005 Colts opened 13-0 before losing. Although members of the '72 Dolphins have become known for sipping champagne after the last unbeaten team falls by the wayside each season, Shula says stories of that annual celebration "have been blown out of proportion."
"You guys put forth the myth that we are pathetic losers down here clicking champagne glasses and clinging desperately to a record set 35 years ago," former Dolphins tight end Jim Mandich told the Daily News. "Somehow we've been portrayed as being evil. We don't ever blow our own horn. It's a great record, but the record doesn't get beaten.
"The Patriots have assembled a powerhouse of a team. They are a classy bunch of guys and play ball the right way. If they want to join the unbeaten club, come on aboard."

Yea there should be an asterisk...The season was only 14 then, its 16 now...and they get a week off in there.

When the rest of the country starts echoing Shula, I can't wait to hear the moaning and crying from bellicheat and Miss Brady....hilarious...dman
*The FIRST question during some of the interviews, So Bellicheat, has the "spygate" affected your team and players? What have you put into place to make sure there isn't anymore "bellicheating" going on? On and on and on, looking forward to it...

I'd be more worried about who is targeting Miss Brady's knees these days. "Their" days are numbered if the pats try to run up anymore scores. Distainful? Yep, pretty bad that someone would try to do that. Payback can be a real bitch sometimes, whether it's warranted or not.....dman

That is a sexy, pound shedding ex coach there Patsrule! This is what you get for cheating but Shula is off mark here. The simple fact is that Pats have been winning since the scandal. Yes, Belicheat sucks based on this and a few others but if this team goes on a wins the whole thing w/o a loss, then there should be no asterick. Hard to root for the Pats here or have the 72 dolphins celebrate once again. I will take the old farts and let them celebrate something good about the Dolphins.

The problem is Shula saying this. I wouldn't mind seeing the Dolphins lose the only unbeaten team, but there should be an asterik next to the Pats should they win out. They did it to themselves.

Not only were the '72 Dolphins' opponents lousy, but their wins weren't even that impressive:
1 at Kansas City Chiefs W 20-10
2 Houston Oilers W 34-13
3 at Minnesota Vikings W 16-14
4 at New York Jets W 27-17
5 San Diego Chargers W 24-10
6 Buffalo Bills W 24-23
7 at Baltimore Colts W 23- 0
8 at Buffalo Bills W 30-16
9 New England Patriots W 52- 0
10 New York Jets W 28-24
11 St. Louis Cardinals W 31-10
12 at New England Patriots W 37-21
13 at New York Giants W 23-13
14 Baltimore Colts W 16- 0
Two shutouts and only one real blowout.
Shula's right, the Pats should get an asterisk. After all, they're playing a longer season in a parity league. If they do go undefeated it will be far more impressive than what the Phish did!

You know, the only good thing that would come of the Patriots running the table would be for that stupid thing to go away. Shula's comments just re-emphasize it. I've always thought it was sort of tacky for them to be openly pulling for teams to lose as the year went on. Can you imagine something like that with any other record? Can you imagine John Elway inviting cameras into his living room, while he rooted against Brett Favre beating his all-time wins mark? Everyone would consider him a sour-grapes-eating scumbag - and justifiably so.
The year we started 13-0, it made me sick to see those old geezers celebrating our loss to the Giants.

Exactly so why should we believe they stopped cheating. I believe they should have at least had a slight drop off. They probably broke out all thier cheating material out so the can embarass teams now and make it look like they wernt cheating. I really doubt the NFL knows all the crap that they have been doing. I never hated this team until this cheating crap.

I'm sure the Patriots will beat their opponents by twice the difference that the Dolphins ever did or could have...I hope the Pats go undefeated so Brady becomes a legend and maybe then we'll quit hearing about all this old teams that were great but wouldn't hold a candle in today's faster and stronger NFL.

This is, typically I might add, such a paranoid load of steaming dung.
The hilarity of all this is that teams routinely try to steal signals from their opponent...using a videocam of some kind is simply a technology update from the binoculars up in a booth.
If it's not a videocam, it's pumped up crowd noise, or some flunky on the sidelines...every team does it, every year, every game, any way they can plausibly get away with it.
This whole thing is overblown hogwash probably born out of jelousy rather than the high & mighty 'integrity' of the game.

Yes, it is ok, because the name of the game is competitive advantage, and if you don't do something to make yourself or your team a little better than the next guy, you won't be around long in that environment...well, unless you're Carl Peterson for whatever reason there. (Everybody brace for the inevitable "Oh yeah?? Well, we're gonna kick your ass, maaaaan")
It doesn't make it right in a virtuous ideal, but the cliche'; 'if you aint cheatin', you aint tryin' didn't originate with Bill Belichick.
You really think the Patriots need to cheat to have a competitive advantage over the Jets??
Why do you think all coaches shield their mouths when they call in plays...you think they're whispering sweet little nothings to their QB??
Some organizations have been known to hire lip readers.
Coaches and players from one organization brief their new clubs on the signals and inner workings of their old club.
How is that different from filming signals??
It's just what teams do...and have done...all teams, all the time.

You really can't listen to guys on the team about this...or their fans or anybody in between. Point blank they're bias. But they as an organization cheated to gain a competitive advantage on the field, they we're warned, and continued to do so. That's cheating of the first order. they can win the Super Bowl this year...and they still cheated. They disrespected the game, the NFL, the Fans, and themselves. And nobody can say different with a straight face. I feel sorry for their fans most of all. Lets just clarify this a little shall we? Any team that is committed to winning will do whatever it takes. You would also expect them to bend the rules as much as possible even if they don't actually break them.
So whilst I do believe that teams caught 'cheating' should be punished, the punishment should fit the crime and nobody should suggest that such misdemeanors should irreparably tarnish any on-field achievements - that's just moralistic chest-thumping and a load of old nonsense.
Also, I do believe that videotaping other teams signals really does fit into the category of 'misdemeanor'. I mean, this is stuff that happens out in the open!! Are they going to make it a crime to just remember them next?
Yes its cheeky and yes they should be punished, but asterisk against an undefeated season? Shula's just sore because they have a legit chance to break his perfect season monopoly!
(not that I think they will by the way - they are less than halfway through the 19 wins required for a perfect season and the hardest games will probably be the two before the last one!)

Actually, I am pretty sure you are wrong on the facts. It is not illegal to steal signs or read lips, in fact the league recognizes it as part of the game. However, the league was clear that USING VIDEO equipment was against the rules AND FOR OBVIOUS REASONS. Even though belicheat got the letter, he totally ignored it, then later refused to acknowledge it, and to make matters worse, acts as if the league owes him because it DARED REVEAL HIM as a CHEATER. He is the only reason that happened, and he is the reason the ASTERISK BELONGS.
BTW Crazy, the Broncos problem with the cap was not deemed to give a competitive advantage since it had nothing to do with getting players signed, but rather using players salaries (deferring the payments) to help finance the new stadium. The league's conclusions clearly state that fact...but your losers need to hang on to whatever shrivels of an excuse for failure that you can, so we understand.

In essense it was a loan secured with interest. We broke no written rule, period. The Broncos as a business are completely free to get loans from whomever they wish, but I also understand the leagues view on it, and I thought the consequences were justified. As you said though...it amounted to a zero competitve advantage on the field.

First of all, you're delusional if you think very few care. The despised Colts were the most beloved team across this country this past weekend....and for one reason.
Second, the fact you state we are the only team to lose a draft pick shows your ignorance. Try San Francisco too. Were we able to put more than 11 players on the field at a time? Or have more than 53 on the team? Failure to pay players who had restructured, yep that'll get you a SB any year. Get real, it isn't even in the same realm as the Pats. Look, It's not my choice to approve or disapprove...the whole cheating thing is like sex...only the details separate unacceptable behavior from a great idea.
It ends up being a game within a game...like squeezing a water balloon.
When the league frowns on one thing, teams and players find something else...& in the NFL environment, the 'gotcha' game will never stop...the NFL to some degree even tacitly approves.
Every team films & photographs the opponent offensive & defensive formations as they line up during a game and instantly sends them down to the sidelines for coaches to de-cipher (& reviews them during half-time)...and this is an accepted practice across the league.
I would imagine many of the non-descript 'sideline assistants' that all teams employ are engaged in some covert signal-stealing enterprise, but it's never become a major issue, or even a discussion.
Blatantly videotaping opponent signals does strike an arrogant tone, but how does that really differ from all the 'accepted' practices that achieve the same thing in only a slightly different way??
My point was, and is...it happens...everywhere, every game. Condoning or condemning isn't really the issue as long as the only penalty to getting caught is righteous indignation and a few fines.
