2000 posts in one thread was enough, time for a new one.

Gotta come up big this weekend, ISU is improving from week-to-week.

Men's basketball tips off this Friday too.

CU plays BB at DU on 11/27. I'm not much of a basketball fan, but some friends and I have tickets right behind the CU bench. DU has nice facility and tickets are very reasonable.

Lets put it this way. If CU cant beat ISU and then turn around at home and beat an extremely vulnerable NU squad this season and end up at 7-5, then I dont want to end up at a bowl game period. Mediocre football teams should not slide into postseason ball with a .500 record. End of story

Generally, I agree with you, Pez. But after a 2-10 season, I think playing in a bowl would be a great, great sign to recruits, boosters and fans.

We SHOULD be good enough to win the remaining 2 games on our schedule, but I won´t take anything for granted and remember the last time Nebraska played a heavily favored Colorado squad at Folsom.

A bowl is what I wanted before the season and I am delighted we are in a good position to make that happen. Go Buffs!

Darrell Scott, the No. 1-ranked tailback recruit in the nation, visited Saturday from California and didn't immediately run for the airport after watching Missouri soundly defeat the Buffs 55-10. In fact, Scott acknowledged CU is solidly in the lead to earn his signature on national signing day in the first week of February.
A family tie is working to CU's advantage.
Scott's uncle is CU true freshman wide receiver Josh Smith. The two played on the same team a year ago and Scott said he would like to be reunited with Smith.
"Family comes first," Scott said. "It is a big deal. It's weird cause I really do want to play with him. Colorado has an advantage over everybody else with that."
Scott said CU coaches told him he will have a good chance at earning the starting job at CU as a true freshman next season if chooses to play in Boulder. He said coaches have emphasized that he will have to work for that job.
"I'm willing to work for anything," he said.

Scott has four more official visits to make and said he might wait until signing day to announce his decision. He said he also could make a decision at the Army All-American game in January.

He said he plans to visit Louisiana State and Florida for sure and will schedule two more visits in the near future. Scott was also impressed with Missouri on Saturday and referred to the Tigers as "a team of giants."
Overall, Scott said he was impressed with Colorado, despite the way the Buffs played.
"I'm coming in with an open mind, trying to see how this university is and I like it so far," Scott said. "They had a tough game, but it comes with the territory. They're a rebuilding program. They're trying to get back to where they were in 1990."

CU impresses prized recruit

By Patrick Ridgell
Longmont Times-Call

BOULDER — Colorado’s 55-10 loss to Missouri on Saturday night was not a pretty sight for Buffs fans. But if it’s any solace, the nation’s No. 1 running back recruit was at Folsom Field, and he said he was impressed with CU’s program.
Darrell Scott, a 6-foot 200-pounder from Ventura, Calif., was one of the recruits making a visit to CU on Saturday night. Scott is ranked as the best prep running back in the nation by Scout.com and
Rivals.com, and he’s the nephew of CU receiver Josh Smith.
“It’s a program that’s rebuilding itself,” Scott said about CU. “They need the key guys on offense to get things going, because the defense held strong at the beginning. They just need some play makers.” Scott said he’ll take visits to LSU, Florida and Texas, and will decide in January after he’s made them all.
Asked if he wants to come to Colorado, Scott said: “I like it a lot. I like the coaching staff, the academics, the facilities. The locker room is amazing.”
Scott said he played a video game in CU’s locker room on Saturday. Scott said his uncle is “letting me do my own thing” when it comes to the recruitment, but added, “He said I wouldn’t look bad in gold and black.”
Scott said he would like to attend college with Smith.
“That’s a major part,” Scott said. “I want to continue playing with him. We’ll see where it leads me.”
As for why the Buffs lost so badly, Scott credited Missouri. “That team was ready,” he said. “They have some weapons. Everybody was huge. It was a team of giants.”

Well, here we are. Fresh start and a fresh thread. We're playing for 2008 starting this week IMO. The Buffs need to turn away everything negative that has happened with their young squad this season and turn it into a positive campaign for the '08 season.

It starts this week in Ames. So GO BUFFS and lets get this new thread off with a win!

By the way, for those who have cable, you are the only ones who are gonna be lucky enough to see the ISU vs CU game. Blah

I have to admit, this is rediculous. How many blocks has our line missed this year with all of our youth playing? How many drops has Cody had? Yet he has stuck in the game and put us in position to beat KU who is what, #6 in the BCS? And he beat OU.

Come on. RED SHIRT FRESHMAN!

We are also recruiting a QB already this year.

I love the guy to BB, but I'm with you on this one. Sure he's young, so things like decision making and pocket comfort will come to him.

Things like weak arm, crappy mobility, short will never be fixable and those are major flaws of Cody.
PROVE ME WRONG CODY!!
Yeah, I would LOVE for him to prove me wrong ... and there's plenty of time for it.

Does he remind you of Jake Plummer at all? I realize he's just 19, but his strengths and weaknesses seem to mirror Jake ... shaky in the pocket, but good on the run. Effiicient passer, but can't throw deep. Heady, excitable gamer, but ultimately ??

Do tell. Because unless you know something Scouts doesn't, then we're actually not.

Here's all the QBs listed as even mildly interested prospects, from 4-star through 2-star. Even Jack Elway is listed, even though as Pain pointed out never even conmsidered CU. So the list is pretty comprehensive. And don't let 2-star Tyler Hanson get you too excited - CU was the only offer he had, other than Idaho State. And the two 3-stars listed here who haven't commited anywhere yet (green stars)? Well there's a reason they haven't commited yet - none have ANY scholarship offers, even from CU! Well, Schmitke has one offer: Idaho State.

What's going on? We went from runner-up to Oklahoma for Landry Jones ... all the way down to battling Idaho State for quarterbacks?! :oyvey: Sheesh. And our roster is already seriously lacking there ... after Nelson leaves next year, we're down to two: Cody and his Idaho buddy Matt Ballenger. Plus Hansen, whom we wrested from Idaho State.

Something's gotta happen soon.

I'm not sure what you mean - are you saying there are guys we're recruiting that aren't listed? I seriously doubt that ... and I don't think paying the subscription would show any new names. If they list Jack Elway, I think they list everybody.

My point is - and it's not a dead horse, Mr. Head-in-the-Sand - is that we have ZERO offers out for uncommitted high school QBs. ZERO. That's just a fact, and facts are stubborn things. The only "dead horse" is Pain's ranting that Jack Elway never considered CU. That's true of course, but his name is right there on the list - just like I said.

Last year they signed 28.

Jens already hit on the RBs, they'll be deep and pretty talented no matter what Scott does.

Wheatley, probably Burney becoming the #1 and anyone but Cha'pelle would be my choice for the #2, he's just too short.

Dizon- Sipili, Burton, and Major among others. They might be losing Dizon, but it'll be a better unit overall next year.

27 players signed last season. (plus a transfer from BSU)

As Jens mentioned the RB position should be covered with Gates and Polk coming in to go along with B. Lockridge, Sumler, and Moyd.

Dizon is irreplaceable in my opinion. He's a once every 10 years type LB. That said, if the Buffs can get Michael Sipili and Marcus Burton back from suspension, they will help to fill the void left by Dizon. Jon Major, the top rated player in CO and one of the top LBs in the country committed to CU 10 days ago, to go along with teo other 2008 recruits and Brad Jones, Jeff Smart Tyler Ahles and Jake Duren.

Same deal with Wheatley. He's one of the best corners CU has ever had. Ben Burney (son of broncos coach Jacob Burney) has played well at time this year, but is not Wheatley's caliber. There are a bunch of young guys already on the roster that need to step and take over the other CB position next year. The coaches really like the CBs they got in the 2007 class, but the 2008 class is light on CBs at this point.

edit.....Herc beat me to it

Mid-rounds (3-5) is my best guess. Dizon's size will an issue and Wheatley's wrist injury history will be an issue.

I'd love to see where I said there was no cap room for Graham. I always said last year there was more room than people thought there was.

Let's see, TJ and other Buff fans knew last fall in the middle of the season that Graham had told people that Denver was his #1 choice in FA.

As it was already pointed out, Jack was a 2-star. I could care less what Scout rates him at, Rivals is what I go off of. I said I didn't believe the Oregon and LSU offers were legit because multiple people who follow recruiting for a living said they didn't believe the offers were legit due to his junior year level of play in a state not known for great HS football.

Wow, I repeat a rumor about black helmets and they don't come true. Oh noes!!!! That's why things are called rumors. WTF do you think most info that comes out at this time of year is?

I really don't feel like going through my posts in the old CU thread, believe what I say or don't, it's no skin off my ass. You're just pissy because the people who follow recruiting much closer than you have called you out on your constant over-the-top rhetoric about recruiting and overreliance on stars. You were pissing and moaning about Josh Smith last year because he was only a 2* until December or January, pointing out other "better" WRs that CU should be going after instaed. Looks like Josh is doing ok at this point, ditto with 2-star Kai Maiava whose only other offers were Idaho, Idaho St., and NM St.

I have CU recruiting between 5-12 different QB's per ESPN's recruiting information and they are in the driver's seat with some.

Tyler Hansen has already committed. *** WHO CARES WHAT HE IS RANKED... obviously the coaches see something in him. Do you not trust their evaluations? ***

We also are 1st on Devin Combs list from Oakdale, CA.

2nd in the running for Bruce Eisenhauer Glendale, AZ and Daniel Nicholas Tuscon, AZ. I hear Nicholas is really good.

3rd for Adam Berry and he also is getting rave reviews.

4th for Bryan Berens and Scott Burgett.

I'm in a rush so i'm not even posting some of the others. I think the coaches are well aware of the depth needed at QB and also that QB's are usually some of the best athletes on the field for any given HS. I'm sure we'll get our fair share.

Let's put it this way. If the kids last name was Smith we would not be having this conversation. Jack Elway is a good HS QB. His star ranking is probably just about right (2 star/3 star depending on the site)

Master___Pain
11-08-2007, 12:11 PM
Jordan Dizon was named a Butkus finalist with Laurinatis from tOSU and Conner from PSU.

Should Dizon win, he'd be the 3rd Butkus award winner from CU, tying OU for most Butkus awards winners. Connor winning would also give PSU their 3rd winner.

Here are some pretty compelling numbers in Dizon's favor

Dizon is #5 in the country in total tackles (119, 11.90 pg)
Dizon is #1 in solo tackles with 85, 8.5 pg(17 more than #2)

Laurinatis is #77 in total tackles, not ranked in the top 100 in solo tackles (34 solo tackles)

Connor is #16 in total tackles and #55 in solo tackles

Dizon has 11 solo tackles for loss, 4 sacks 2 ints, 1 TD, 1 FF and 4 QB hurries

Laurinatis has 6 solo tackles for loss, 5 sacks, 2 ints, 0 TDs, 0 FF 0 hurries

Connor has 10 solo tackles for loss, 5 sacks, 1 Int, 0 Tds, O FF O hurries

Based on numbers, this should be a slam dunk for Jordan Dizon. Unfortunately these other two candidates play on the east coast and for more prominent programs. Dizon has the same number solo tackles as Laurinatis has TOTAL tackles.

The HS enrollment is 3,000 kids, so I'd venture a guess that they are in one of the higher classifications in CA. They lost to Norco last year in the state playoffs. Norco was a team that featured a few CU recruits that ended up at ASU (Tello and Gerhardt)

SORRY! I thought based on where you posted that that it was a Dizon video!

Looks like a big kid - very strong arm and lightning-quick release. He never looks at a 2nd receiver, but that's nitpicking for a 16-year old ... and since those are 2006 highlights, he prolly was just 16. The 99-yard TD at the end is a beauty, but the best pass I thought was the 3rd one on the video - a sideline lofter that led his receiver nicely.

Listen, I think I understand what's getting me in trouble here ... you guys think I'm dissing the recruits because of their low star rating. That is NOT TRUE, or at least it's not my intention, not by a long shot. My comments that we have just 3 QBs now, and just one signed for next year (and nobody else offered), I stand by that. We're headed back to the top, and I thgink it's perfectly reasonable to wonder why we have ZERO offers out to QBs now. That's not a knock, it's just a (valid) question. (And BTW - don't trust my player evaluations ... in pre-season 2005 I though Dorsett Davis was headed for a Pro Bowl career Uhh)

Last time I talk about this. In 2008 there will be at least 4 scholarship
QBs on the roster. CU has offered a bunch of QBs for 2009. I'm not sure where you are getting that there are 0 offers out to QBs. Tyler Hanson has an offer and has accepted it. How many scholarship QBs do you want on the roster? 4-5 is typical.

Let Hawk go? What the heck are you talking about? He's playing tons of freshmen and RS-freshmen due to the lack of depth at nearly every position when Barnett left. I think a lot of peoples expectations for the 2007 Buffs got skewed when the Buffs beat OU, myself included. A success for this team before the season started would have been 6-6, 7-5 type season and a bowl game appearance. The Buffs are still on track to do that. 2009 is the year that I think the Buffs will break out and be a legit contender for the B12 Championship.

I'm pretty sure he was an elite 8 QB coming out from his senior year. With a sagging program and a QB of that quality, you take him no matter what.

People are funny when they are bagging on him... he's a redshirt freshman which means he's here starting for another three seasons. This season alone he's already led us to some nice victories.

I just dont get the impatience of some people. Hawk took a program over that was going nowhere in a hurry. We are upgrading our facilities. Cody has been damn impressive in his first year. We have a TON of very young talent at wideout. We got the highest rated OTwho started much in his first year, as well as the kid from Hawaii. We got those kids coming off a 2-10 year. We got a top 75 recruit to come in at linebacker. We are currently at the top of Darrell Scott's list, who is the #1 running back. There is no chance Barnett would have a snowball's chance in hell of landing that kid, and we are right in the mix. If Hawk can pull off a miracle and land that kid, this team can be deadly in '08 or '09.

From my perspective, when I see all the coaching openings these past couple years, I am more and more thrilled we landed Hawkins ... people I spoke to last week say we're the 75% favorite to land the nation's #1 high school running back in a couple months, just one year after Hawk parlayed a 2-10 record into the #3 O-Line recruiting class in the nation (we're starting TWO true freshmen now).

Not only am I not wondering "when" we're gonna let him go, I am wondering (hoping) he stays twenty years or more. Last Friday might've been my best-ever experience at Folsom ... and at my age that's really saying something.

Take it with a grain of salt, but Kyle Ringo of the BDC says Ryan Deehan committed to CU.

http://footballrecruiting.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=59943

Thought I would share a few odds and ends I've heard through the grapevine today.

This is stuff I've been told but have been unable to officially confirm either because I haven't received a return phone call or people are not ready speak up. I figure why let that stop me from entertaining all of you.

Anyway, I hear Ryan Deehan, a 6-foot-4, 230-pound four-star tight end from Poway, Calif. gave coach Dan Hawkins an oral commitment this week.

Deehan would be the third four-star recruit in the 2008 class. I tried to confirm with him Wednesday, but he hasn't called back. Maybe it has something to do with his house burning down in those awful Southern California wildfires earlier this fall.

Deehan was also considering Oregon and Arizona State, two teams that have had pretty good seasons.

Okay that's cool. But the 5-season mark is a long way away.

Hawkins inherited an "empty cupboard," you might say - Barnett didn't leave him with much on the roster. Last year was a bitter pill, but 6-6 and a bowl game here in Year 2 is not bad at all. And Hawk's recruiting has been ground-up: First, three good freshman WRs (two of whom played a lot this year) and two Idaho 3-star QBs (his son and Matt Ballenger) addressed the weakest roster deficiencies left by Barnett. Then some O-Line "Road Graders" (as Pain calls them), and now we've signed a 4-star RB (Ray Polk), and might sign the #1 RB in the nation (Darrell Scott).

I can't look 5 years down the road ... but after 1 9/10 years, I love what he's done.

Seven members of Colorado's coaching staff, including head coach Dan Hawkins, visited Katoa and his parents Sunday afternoon in the press box that overlooks Cottonwood's field. It is there that the five-star recruit (Scout.com) pledged to play for the Buffaloes.

Colorado's coaches "were really excited when I told them," he said. "All of them were jumping around and shouting and stuff. It was pretty cool."

Not so fast my friend....

The Colorado coaches obviously had a great impact with you on the day that they visited or you would not have committed to them. What kind of impact did the visit with Coach Stoops and Coach Venables have on you tonight?

Lynn Katoa: “Yeah, they have had a really big impact. I should not have done what I did and I should have given them a shot first. I am really thinking hard this week.”

Lynn Katoa: “What Coach Stoops did open my eyes just a little bit about some things, especially about how many people he has on scholarship at linebacker and at some of the other positions on this team. Coach Stoops is going to call me and we are going to talk some more this weekend, and then I will make a decision on what I am going to do.”

And Stoops flat out lied to the kid about the number of LBs CU has on scholarship....

During his in-home with Colorado Katoa said that he was given some information, that Oklahoma clarified. He wouldn’t go into that topic, but did say that Oklahoma made light of one thing that the Buffs had left out.

“Oklahoma told me that Colorado has like 14 linebackers on scholarship, that’s a three deep at each position,” he said. I want to play but you can be good and still sit as you learn everything behind that many guys.

“I want to play as early as I can.”

You can keep telling your self that. CU has 4 walk ons, ie non scholarship LBs. 2 of CU LBs were out for the year due to suspension and there future is murky. Bottom line, is there are less than 10 scholarship LBs on CU's roster today. For OU to claim that Cu has "like 14 LBs" may not be a lie in your mind, but it's also no where near the truth.

The recruit that were on campus seemed to enjoy their trips. A trifecta of former NU recruits, Given OL, Williams DE, and Rippy LB were tripping together along with current CU commits Tyler Hansen and Ryan Dannewitz as well as aTm commit Kapron Lewis-Moore DE and UCLA commit EJ Woods S/Ath. Givens is supposed to decide this week sometime between CU and Texas. He'd be my guess as the next CU commit.

ESPN-U has a 30-minute recruiting show on weekly now. Caught it last night, and it's damn good for TV. They featured that Tuioti-Mariner kid Hawk just signed ... kid credited the Polynesian-friendly atmosphere in Boulder as incentive. The panel discussed the job Hawk has done, and one of the guys mentioned something we keep forgetting: despite being a sorry 2-10 last season, Hawk nailed a solid class anyway, and is closing in on an even better group now. One also mentioned in passing that CU, Florida and LSU are the finalists for Darrell Scott (didn't mention Texas).

Colorado Lands Top 100 Member
Bryce Givens made an early commitment to the Nebraska Cornhuskers, but after a weekend visit to Colorado he decided that it was best for him to help build a strong program with Dan Hawkins at Colorado. Scout.com caught up with him for his reasoning behind the switch.

That's our third Top 100? Major and Katoa?

Reading through the CU pages on Scouts, I gotta be honest in saying Stoops might've had a point about CU LBs. Mohler, Major, Katoa and now Rippy, added to those returning, make us an LB powerhouse.

I just looked more closely at our LB class ... and despite all the Lynn Katoa/Jon Major hub-bub, I think Shawn Mohler might be the most important right now. He's a JC, and was offered by all these huge Top 25 programs (below). Seems to me that as a JC, he'll be ready to walk in, start, and play at a very high level immediately.http://img172.imageshack.us/img172/959/43758869yy5.jpg
BTW, with Dorrell headed out the door, anybody know how it is that UCLA has the #7 recruiting class in the nation thusfar?

And - at the risk of angering the Tyler Hansen fan club again - this analysis ^^^, looking closely at which and how many schools offer these kids scholarships, is why I'm not too excited about Hansen. Remember, the only school that offered him was Eastern Washington. Contrast Mohler - who basicaly had his choice of SEVEN top 25 programs.

Semi-interesting story on Hawk. I just wish his "style" had been a little more fiery Sunday night. Just a litle more.

Colorado Coach Has Unique Style
By Mitch Dobbs
Dec 28, 2007

http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/9236/66745905ze3.jpg

For about 45 minutes yesterday Colorado Coach Dan Hawkins stood in the lobby of the Shreveport Hilton Thursday just hanging out as the team ate an early meal, reporters worked on interviews with Buffs players and the Colorado traveling contingent milled about the hotel.

He spoke to a man who had a small child riding on his shoulders for a while, and then a scraggly-looking stranger asked if he was Colorado’s football coach and said, “Yeah, I’ve seen you!” Hawkins asked the man his name and shook his hand before the man walked out onto the street.

Later, after the group of more than a dozen reporters were worn out from lengthy conversations with Colorado senior tailback Hugh Charles, offense captain and 6-8 offensive tackle Tyler Polumbus, defensive tackle George Hypolite, Butkis Award runner-up Jordon Dizon and other players, Hawkins, with his black and gold Nike sneakers and sporty shades riding atop his head, eased into the center of a crowd of reporters and began sharing his philosophies of life and football.

On life, the Colorado coach might fairly be described as new-aged. He was asked about being one of the few college coaches with a blog, and of course about his son Cody, a redshirt freshman who starts at quarterback for the Buffs.

"I've obviously answered that a bunch over my career,”Hawkins said, “but I really do coach them all like they're my own kid. I'm not afraid to hug them and tell them I love them. I'm not afraid to discipline them, either.”

Hawkins does not coach quarterbacks and he is not the offensive coordinator, he said, and the staff makes decisions on who will play by consensus. Hawkins told us that if the majority of the staff wanted another quarterback that’s what would happen.

This is also not the first time Hawkins has coached his son. "Here's a little factoid for you,” Hawkins said. “I was an assistant coach for Bill Buckner and I coached him, coached Cody in baseball. Again, I let Bill do most of the work."

(Buckner was most famous for a soft ground ball that went between his legs when he was the first-baseman for the Boston Red Sox in game six of the 1986 World Series.)

Dizon, who was credited with 160 tackles this season and said he’s missed at least 30, said Hawkins’ style is contagious.

"He's one contagious guy,” Dizon said. “Everything he does, you want to do. He's that energetic. A lot of people idolize him. He does things with a passion and heart. That's what a head coach needs to do. He needs to show that he's passionate about the game. It rubs off on us."

Sometimes Hawkins sounds more like Dr. Phil than a college football coach. Asked if practice or off-field conduct was more important this bowl week, Hawkins answered: “It's a balance of life. It's an easy formula, but it's a hard one to follow. If you can go home and mix in a salad, and get a little exercise, and take care of your wife, and take care of your work, you're probably going to have a pretty good life. But if you get over one side or the other, it's probably not going to work out so get."

"I've said many, many times, I think I've become a better coach --- I don't know if I won more games, but I had more fun --- when I figured out that this whole is to make a difference in people's lives,” Hawkins said. “At the end of the day, I'm just coaching football. But that's the whole thing, is to bring a positive influence to everybody else. If you do that, at the end of the day, when they put you in a pine box, they say 'yeah, I miss that guy. He brought a lot to this place.' But at the end of the day, if all they said is how many games I won, then I probably didn't do it so well."

His style seems to work for Colorado. After winning just two games last year the Buffs are 6-6 and the program seems to be moving in the right direction.

USAAB Day 2: AM/PM Practice MVP

The second day of practices is underway for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl and Tuesday was the morning of the linebacker out at the West squads practice. Cottonwood High School (Utah) linebacker Lynn Katoa (http://colorado.scout.com/a.z?s=148&p=8&c=1&nid=2972254) and Mike Matui from Mandeville High School in Louisiana both stood out but Katoa was clearly the top performer in the West’s morning practice.

Lynn Katoa is a very fast, physical linebacker and his skills were on display during the inside run period. Katoa, who is headed to play for Dan Hawkins at Colorado, spent the morning causing havoc in the West backfield. The 6-2, 220-pound linebacker made great reads and on several occasions brought Justin Johnson (http://colorado.scout.com/a.z?s=148&p=8&c=1&nid=2698896) and Darrell Scott (http://colorado.scout.com/a.z?s=148&p=8&c=1&nid=2742300) down behind the line of scrimmage.

Not only was Katoa the best linebacker against the run but he also looked comfortable in pass coverage, getting an interception during one set of drills.

Top Performers at each position:

Quarterback – Dayne Crist (http://colorado.scout.com/a.z?s=148&p=8&c=1&nid=2779587)

Crist had another solid performance at Tuesday’s morning practice. Consistency has been the strength of Crist, and on Tuesday he looked the best of the West quarterbacks. Crist hasn’t made any spectacular plays but he continues to complete a very high percentage of short and intermediate throws.

Running Back – Darrell Scott
Darrell Scott, the top rated running back by Scout.com, flashed his speed and power during the inside running drills. Scott was the only back to have success running the ball between the tackles during the various drills. The 6-1, 200-pound back from St. Bonaventure High ran through the tackle attempt of Mike Mauti for the longest run of the day.

Well, whoever it was minimizing Blaine Gabbert earlier in the thread - saying he was benched in high school (I think it was Hercules Wrongafeller) - was WAY off base. Today Rivals released its final rankings of the national 2008 class, and Gabbert was #14. No, not the #14 quarterback, the #14 overall player at any position. I don't think we ever had a great shot at him (though he did mention CU in a video interview I saw last summer), I merely post this to wonder why we didn't pursue him a bit harder.

Actually, he was benched in favor of his younger brother this year on at least one occasion. Maybe if you actually followed recruiting, you'd have known that. You'd also know that he was a 5-star not because of his play this year, he was on a terrible team much like CU recruit Tyler Hansen who you've whined about on multiple occasions. He was a 5-star because his size, potential, and he blew up at the Elite 11 camp, it was not completely based on his play on the field. If you actually looked at the screenshot you posted, the little comment underneath his name says he got his 5th star because of what he did at the Elite 11 camp. But you're a ****ing idiot who tries to talk the talk by looking at the free info like rankings and visit dates, rather then stepping up to the plate and getting real info to make real conclusion. For an attorney, the conclusions you draw off of little/no info is shocking.

You also really nailed that CU was in Brandon Smith's final 2 earlier this fall simply because Scout had CU listed as "High" interest. I'm sure you know that CU didn't even make his final 3 in the end.

And I'm glad you're so sure, MP ... but I am equally sure he had no idea. He's almost always wrong in here (and usually wrong on salary caps too, btw), and he has never heeded my challenge to post a single link to any info he brought here - a challenge I only made after his umpteenth hostile post toward me. Despite my numerous courtesies to him over the two years I've been around (the links above prove that amply), he's never had anything but strident, hostile criticisms of me (criticism I might add you gleefully joined).

What about his starting this new thread, and ending the 2000+ post thread I had started on CU? MEEE-OOOW! It's silly of course, but the NU guys are bragging that their thread is longer than ours! ::)

TWO WEEKS to LOI Day:

There's still room in Hawkins' 2008 class
Buffs could add as many as five more to current list

By Kyle Ringo
Wednesday, January 23, 2008

National signing day for college football recruits is two weeks from today, and Colorado coach Dan Hawkins still has five available scholarships to give.

Devan Johnson, a member of the 2007 recruiting class who delayed his enrollment to this year while he worked to get a qualifying test score, confirmed Tuesday that he wasn't able to get the score. He will attend one of several California junior colleges beginning in June. He said he still hopes to be a Buff two years from now after earning his associates' degree.

P.T. Gates, a running back from Saddleback College in California, could still be awarded a scholarship as part of the 2008 class, but he won't be in Boulder for spring classes. Gates and Saddleback failed to get the necessary paperwork to CU before the admissions deadline passed last week.

If he has passed 48 credit hours at Saddleback with at least a 2.0 grade-point average and has earned his associates' degree, he could enroll in summer classes at CU. He would probably have to pass a full load of courses during the summer to be eligible in the fall because of NCAA rules that require student athletes to have achieved a certain level of progress toward their degree at the outset of each school year. This rule cost former CU quarterback Bernard Jackson his senior season in 2007.

Hawkins said he will award 24 scholarships in the 2008 recruiting cycle. Rivals.com and Scout.com are reporting CU has 16 known commitments after Josh Williams, a defensive lineman from Texas recently de-committed and chose to attend Nebraska.

Hawkins gave two scholarships to current members of the team who played as walk-ons in 2007, wide receiver Scotty McKnight and safety D.J. Dykes. He also gave a scholarship to mid-year enrollee Jameson Davis, a place-kicker from Idaho. Davis has told several media outlets he was given a scholarship. That brings the total to 19.

One of the five remaining scholarships figures to be awarded to Darrell Scott, the nation's No. 1 running back, if he chooses CU.

Hawkins also is recruiting tight ends Konrad Reuland, who chose to transfer from Notre Dame early in the 2007 season, and Ryan Wallace, from Bowling Green, Ky., who is now listing CU as his top choice, Scout.com reported. CU fans are in the dark today about who might fill those final few spots in the class. They were in this position last year when offensive line recruit Garth Gerhardt de-committed just before signing day. CU coaches filled the vacancy by offering a scholarship to Kai Maiava, an offensive lineman from Hawaii. Maiava was planning to sign with New Mexico State, but jumped at the chance to play in the Big 12. He made coaches thankful for the twist of fate by earning freshman All-America honors from The Sporting News this season.

The next two weekends are the final opportunities for CU coaches to host recruits making official visits to campus. The only confirmed visitor this weekend at CU is Patrick Mahnke, a safety from Mountain Vista High School in Highlands Ranch who is already committed to the Buffs.

Rivals.com lists 39 players as having made official visits to CU during the 2007 season and this winter. Ten of those players still haven't decided where they will play their college football.

Hawkins and his assistants have spent the past week recruiting around the nation, and they will continue their pursuit of recruits until a quiet period arrives on Feb. 3. Then they will be able to talk to recruits on campus only. A four-day dead period for national signing day begins on Feb. 4.

From Kyle Ringo of the BDC (http://buffzone.com/blogs/buffzone-sports/2008/jan/23/pericak/)

...So a few people e-mailed me on Wednesday afternoon and told me they had heard defensive lineman Christopher Perri had quit the team or was kicked off the team for some sort of altercation.

This was news to me because I just saw Chris on Tuesday and he looked about as upbeat as I've ever seen him. We shook hands in passing and he said everything was going great.

I asked CU sports information director Dave Plati about the rumor. He said no player has been kicked off the team or quit other than those who came to a mutual decision with Hawkins to part ways with CU at the end of the season.

I hope you're all happy. Now I feel like a gossip columnist. Have a good day.

At DE we have
Lucas
Herrod
Obi
Hudgins (article today in the BDC that he's recovering well and on track for spring ball)
Goree (splitting time between DE and DT)
Shields (same as Goree)

On the field Herrod saw time on ST and played in 8 games on defense. He only had 71 snaps on D this year. You should google him and learn about his personal story. It's truly amazing. He's a great kid and I expect him to break out this season.

Maybe if you followed recruiting as closely as I do, you wouldda known he was never benched, and you would have known why he wasn't playing:

Colorado will get the last in-home with Darrell Scott tomorrow night:

Final in-home visit set

Colorado has scheduled a final in-home visit with Scott for Friday. A majority of the Buffs' staff had stopped by last Saturday for an in-home meeting that went very well, according to sources. With the contact period ending this weekend, Scott's meeting tomorrow with the Buffaloes will be the final in-home visit that the Ventura (Calif.) St. Bonaventure standout will host.

The Texas Longhorns stopped by for their final in-home visit with Scott on Tuesday night. Assistant recruiting coordinator and wide receivers coach Bobby Kennedy (http://colorado.rivals.com/viewcoach.asp?Coach=71) was the lone Texas assistant in Scott's home that evening. The previous Tuesday night, three Texas coaches - head coach Mack Brown (http://colorado.rivals.com/viewcoach.asp?Coach=64), new running backs coach Major Applewhite (http://colorado.rivals.com/viewcoach.asp?Coach=628) and Coach Kennedy - stopped by to meet with Scott and his mother.

UCLA and new head coach Rick Neuheisel (http://colorado.rivals.com/viewcoach.asp?Coach=2134) have tried to make a late push for Scott. But all indications are that his final decision will be made between Colorado and Texas.

Tidbit: Ralphie, the University of Colorado’s live mascot, is actually not a buffalo, but an American Bison. The university unveiled its newest mascot, Ralphie V, at the team’s spring game in April; it wasn’t an auspicious debut. In other Ralphie-related news, Ralphie IV believes he made a mistake in “retiring early,” and while he would like to return to live mascot work, believes Colorado has not made him feel welcome and would like to be released into the wild.

NY Times CU Preview

http://thequad.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/07/16/the-quad-countdown-no-44-colorado/

Tidbit: Ralphie, the University of Colorado’s live mascot, is actually not a buffalo, but an American Bison. The university unveiled its newest mascot, Ralphie V, at the team’s spring game in April; it wasn’t an auspicious debut. In other Ralphie-related news, Ralphie IV believes he made a mistake in “retiring early,” and while he would like to return to live mascot work, believes Colorado has not made him feel welcome and would like to be released into the wild.

I just put the NY Times Preview for NU up on our thread. I was impressed by how knowledgeable they were about our team and how in depth they got, even though they are still in the 40s in terms of ranking.

Do you agree with their thoughts on the Buffs? While I agree that CU (and NU) are probably both in the 8-4 or 7-5 range, it will be interesting to see what kind of jump you make in year 3 under Hawk. I have to admit I think hes pretty sharp and I believe he'll be a hell of a coach for you guys for a long time, so I wouldn't be that shocked by a push for the North crown out of Boulder.

Really, the way I see it, if Mizzou can play to their potential they should win the division by a couple games...if not it will be a mess (but in a good way;) ).

More or less, yes. They didn´t talk about our defensive secondary enough tho, which is definitely is our main weakness. Especially the Corners ... Wheatley is gone and Burley is probably done for the entire year with an injury. The thing with this season is that the schedule is fairly brutal (OOC games against West Virginia and Florida State, away games to Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska) and that the team is fairly young all across the board. So while I obviously expect the team to improve, it might now show in the win column.

I'm very wary of using the academic ineligibility or off-field issues smack given the almost inevitable karma backlash it brings. Nebraska may very well be losing a good recruit to the Anaheim Angels because he got drafted higher than expected. It's often a game of seeing how much of your recruiting class actually ends up on the field.

"I did it in high school, but I realize I can't do it in college. The teachers are real strict and they really don't know you all too well like a high school teacher would. I thought I could give them a smile or whatever and get the grade, but then I realized it doesn't work. You can't charm your way through college."

That quote says all you need to know about how ****ed up the relationship between academics and athletics are in this country's high schools. So many of these schools are much more concerned about winning a few Friday night games, and don't seem to give damn that they are graduating morons who are completely unprepared for the next phase of their life.

The high school might get a little glory out of preferential treatment like this, but it really ends up biting the players in the ass down the line.

Yeah...all the urban legends being perpetuated by the poor widdle nu fans when they come to boulder. It started as some 35 year dudes wife that got shoved down to the ground, was pissed on, had been thrown at her, was hit with piss balloons and their car was lit on fire. Now it's "someone's friend's 95 year old great grandmother" who has suffered this fate. You'd think if Boulder was so bad and that anything husker related was burned, pillaged and pissed on that the red clad loons would simply not come to Boulder every other year in droves. Instead we are subjected to the huskers continually pissing and moaning about CU fans and lack of class/knowledge/whatever. Meanwhile the same fan base writes fake articles about other teams QBs being coke dealers and solicit death threat on their own coaches. You stay classy Nebraska.

Yeah, I'm ready for the football season

3 (CSU, WVU, Nebraska) but the networks usually don´t pick the games until like 2 weeks before.

Even in 2006 most games were televised and all but 2 (Miami OH, Baylor) games were televised last season. Just chill and be patient, we don´t even know the kickoff times for the remaining games except for WVU and Nebraska yet.

Ro, are you okay now? 4 of the first 5 games have been/are on national or regional TV. There's a pretty good chance of the KU game being televised as well as OSU, aTm, Mizzou. Not to sure that KSU and ISU will be.
