Penny Parker: Elway indignant after bar cuts him off
By Penny Parker, Rocky Mountain News
November 2, 2007
Broncos Hall-of-Famer John Elway lost his thrill at Cherry Creek Grill.
There are conflicting versions of the story, but according to Elway, he and his girlfriend, Paige Green, along with pal Craig Andrisen arrived at the restaurant around 6 p.m. Wednesday and sat at the end of the bar. Throughout the course of the evening the threesome ordered drinks (the number is under dispute) and appetizers
Several hours later, when Elway attempted to order another glass of wine, he was told by the bartender that management was cutting him off. According to the former Broncos quarterback, he asked to speak to the manager.
"I asked her for her card to find out what her name was," Elway told me. "I said to her ‘If that’s your policy (to refuse him another drink), then that’s the way it is but I’m not coming back.’ We had been there for hours, and I appreciated them taking care of me, but we were just sitting there having a discussion. We weren’t even being loud."
Anne Wheeler, the manager on duty, claims that Elway was served seven glasses of wine (a number he disputes) and was cut off when he tried to order an eighth. For the record, Andrisen says Elway was refused a fourth — not eighth — glass of wine and was told that he had to order food if he wanted an additional drink.
"(Elway) got upset and was in my face a little bit," Wheeler said. "He stood up and towered over me and pointed his finger in my face. I apologized, and said I was sorry to hear that he would never come back."
Both Elway and Andrisen deny the alleged intimidation. "I did not stick my finger in the girl’s face or try and intimidate her," Elway said. "It was a matter of discussing things. I said ‘If that’s your policy that’s your policy, but I’m not coming back.’"

Sounds like Denver still hasn't moved beyond the "Elway Watch" of 1983.

ahaha, here is the what Deadspin.com people had to say:
While at a Denver-area restaurant, John Elway was cut off from alcohol after the restaurant manager claimed he tried to order his eighth glass of wine. Even if he had seven glasses, he still would have been able to legally drive at least 98 yards on streets in the Cleveland area.

I don't blame a restaurant for cutting off high profile people. If he drives and gets into an accident the restaurant, manager, and bartender are all screwed.

7 glasses of wine in a 3 hour period for a 230 lb guy is a lot, but not ridiculous. If he wasn't driving, and wasn't causing issues... it's sort of a non-issue.
I could see either side of this story being true, and frankly... not a huge deal either way. I bartended for years and it's a nightly event.
You think this chick tried to let her skirt fly up a little so Elway could see how big her bal** were?
Give me a break.

7 glasses of wine -- for a 230 pound man --- over a 3 hour period -- with food? I doubt Elway was even buzzed at that point.
To treat any customer like that is ridiculous, I would have acted the same way. Add in the fact that having Elway in your bar is a major draw for other customers, and that's poor service!
I call for an immediate boycott of the Cherry Creek Grill! I'll never, ever go there again! (of course, I live in the middle east, but it's the thought that counts....)

I dont see the problem. I know for a fact that he had the same driver as Marshall did so what is the big deal? If I was the manager, I would make sure to highlight the bar seat and add a plaque on the counter that reads, "This is where John Elway had 8 glasses of wine and got cut off." Also, charge a $1 to sit where Elway's Ass has sat before.

I can easily handle 7 glasses of wine over 3 hours, and I'm 160 pounder depending on the last time I used the facilities. I've also been TIPS certified, which bartenders take to be able to safely serve alcohol. This sounds like a case of reading right out of the TIPS book, and not asessing the actual situation. A lot of the guidelines are pretty weak and used only to cover the a$$ of an establishment.
Another case of a place being more worried about litigation than life.

You bring up a really good point. As long as John wasnt driving or being disruptive it shouldnt matter how much alcohol he was consuming. I would have gotten into the managers face as well. Thats just ridiculous.

Why is this even a story? Even if Elway did do what they said he did, he didn't cross the line. When did it become a bad thing to be upset over service that a person is not getting?

Is there more to the story? Most likely. But going by what John and his fellow patrons are stating it seems as if the bar was out of line. Bartenders are not mindreaders, they had no idea if John was driving that night. And the bar keeps never stated that John was disrupting the bar, only that he had a few glasses of wine. That hardly constitutes a reason to cut him off IF that is the entire story. But again, going by what was said by both parties i think ill side with John on this one.

Rumor has it Elway has been cut off before. So maybe his reputation proceeded him. He likes his alcohol but this is a little over the top and I agree with most its uncalled for. Now if he was on his eighth shot of Tequila then she has a point. But he is eating, had been there 3 hours, and wasn't making a scene. R

with your tirades, I can see how you can. I think Elway drinking wine not once but 7 times is why I would kick him out. I would have said, "Look John. You are a hero in this state. If people see you drinking Merlot and not a cold man drink like a beer, we will lose our good reputation as will you. Now get out of here before some 3rd rate newspaper makes a story about this. And get to the liquor store and pick up a sixer of some Sam Adams Black Porter to grow some hair back on your chest!" Now , that would be me of course.

Would You Cut John Elway Off At Your Bar?
Thu Nov 08, 2007 at 03:26:24 PM
2003-01-23-inside-elway.jpgWatching the press conference where John Elway announced his retirement in 1998, I turned to a friend of mine to see he had tears streaming down his face. That is the only time I ever saw him cry, before or since. Not even when I kneed him in the junk over a four-square dispute in fifth grade -- that's right Denver, I fight dirty, what of it?
Blubbering, this beacon of machismo managed to stammer out these words about number 7, "He's been like my father."
And I know this guy isn't alone in his insanity. This town is absolutely nuts about the buck-toothed genius who brought us two Super Bowls. We're fanatical about laying claim to the greatest quarterback in the history of the game -- don't start with me.
So imagine my surprise when I read Penny Parker's column last Saturday in which Parker reported that Cherry Creek Grill had the nerve to cut off our favorite adopted son -- father, whatever. After four glasses of wine, no less. The man is pure testosterone, a Greek god of a being; how could the Grill possibly think that John Elway could get drunk off wine? Everclear and mescaline shots, maybe. Not wine.
And what kind of bar manager thinks to his or herself, "Gee, let's effectively toss Zeus from the bar and tell him never to return?"
I asked around a bit.
Rashad, a manager at McCormick's Fishouse downtown said, "It doesn't matter who it is, if they are inebriated or slurring their speech, we will stop serving them."
Bah. Corporate line.
Shannon Baker, at the Wazee Supper Club laughed before saying, "We would try to cut anyone off before they get drunk. If [Elway] were here, we'd probably try to call him a cab or a limo or something. We would just want to see him get home safely."
Sure, sure.
But I finally got a real answer out of a bartender at the College Inn, whose name I will withhold because, Denver, sometimes truth comes with a price. "I don't think that's possible," our Honest Abe booze-slinger said in response to the question what would Elway have to do to get cut off at the bar. "Drop trou in the middle of the bar, maybe? I don't even know if that would do it."
So I ask you this, Denver: If you managed a bar, what would John Elway have to do to get cut off? Please post your answers in the comments section below.
