I think he would be the perfect "Nick Barnett" style MLB for this 4-3 defense. Vilma also has shown that he can be very effective playing in that defense. Magini came in and forced a smaller MLB in the 3-4 where he has to take on guards. Not a good fit.

Of course..he now has a significant injury...
Just the kind of player Shanny like to give high contracts to.

Despite their worst start since 1999, the Jets still hope to salvage something positive from this season. They probably will have to do it without one of their top players, Jonathan Vilma.

Their defensive leader faces the likelihood of season-ending knee surgery, the Daily News has learned. Vilma had a battery of tests the last two days, which revealed a "significant" injury, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

Vilma is said to be mulling his options, but the prevailing feeling is that surgery is inevitable.

This was supposed to be a critical season for the talented inside linebacker, a first-round pick in 2004. His well-documented struggles in Eric Mangini's 3-4 system have fueled speculation that he could be traded in 2008, the final year of his contract. Obviously, a major injury will severely affect his trade value.

Vilma will be replaced by rookie David Harris, a second-round pick from Michigan.

It has been a strange few days for Vilma. He was hurt in Sunday's loss to the Bengals, according to Mangini, but he finished the game. The Jets apparently knew about the injury, raising questions about whether he made it worse by playing.

Mangini didn't reveal the injury until Monday. Ordinarily, the coach doesn't volunteer injury information, but he offered it when asked to explain why Vilma was removed for a handful of plays in the second half. He rarely comes off the field. Vilma took every defensive snap in 2006. The injury "dramatically affected" his play, Mangini said. Curiously, Vilma refused to acknowledge the injury Tuesday during his weekly radio spot on WFAN. The players are forbidden from discussing injuries, but Vilma went out of his way to shoot down the notion he was hurt. He almost sounded angry that he was pulled from the game. Vilma contradicted Mangini's version, saying he was removed because of a "coach's decision....It definitely wasn't because I was injured in the game. You have to ask the head man why I was taken out."
Vilma evidently went for an MRI exam later Monday, after his radio show, and received the sobering news. Yesterday, Vilma was excused from practice because he underwent "some more tests," Mangini said.

Asked about the conflicting views, Mangini said, "Sometimes you're going to see it differently as a player and as a coach." He lauded Vilma's toughness.

"John has a lot of Laveranues (Coles) in him, and you love that about him, you really do," Mangini said. "You respect that about him. Like Curtis Martin, (his attitude is), 'It doesn't matter what my status is in terms of physically, I'm going to play.'

"That's toughness. I appreciate that. Sometimes you have to look at it and say it's counterproductive, it's not helping even though you love the fact that they're trying."

Vilma never has missed a game in three-plus seasons. He's the "quarterback" of the defense, responsible for making the calls. He made the Pro Bowl as an alternate in 2005, but his production declined last season in the new defense.

Undersized for the 3-4, Vilma never complained. He vowed to improve this season, but he has registered only 39 tackles (fifth on the team) in seven games. He also has interception.

BAKER BACK: TE Chris Baker, who missed last week's game because of a back injury, practiced on a limited basis. Baker said he wasn't left behind as a punitive measure for criticizing the play-calling after the previous week's loss. "They would never do that," he said. "We want to win. That had nothing to do with it."...LB Matt Chatham, a strong special teams player, is likely to be activated from the physically-unable-to-perform list....The Nov.18 home game against the Steelers, originally scheduled for 1 p.m., has been moved to 4:05.

You know, there has never been a season i can remember since Vilma went to NY, where there WASNT a rumor he wanted out! There has always been a very negative sense about the whole thing. It seems like there always was more going on behind the scenes than anyone let on. But it looks like Vilma is finally on his way out! Too bad it didnt happen before the season started!

I think the last two years he wanted out. He doesn't fit the 3-4 defense at all.

I would offer something for him. See what it would take to get him from New York and do it.

Even better than losing DJ would be moving Ian out, sliding DJ over to the will and placing Vilma at the Mike. I think both players would love the move and I think both players would become more effective from it.

To follow up on SoCal's post. Being in NY they have been talking about the Vilma situation lately. Most people are saying is that his knee his hurt just not as bad as the Jets make it out to be but Vilma is also not telling the truth when he says he isn't hurt. It's a case of him being somewhat hurt, not fitting in with the 3-4 scheme, and the Jets season all but over already.

He is not necessarily injured...

Knee injury shelves Jets LB Vilma for season

Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Jets linebacker Jonathan Vilma (http://www.nfl.com/players/jonathanvilma/profile?id=VIL582180) was placed on injured reserve Saturday with a knee injury, ending the one-time Pro Bowler's season after seven games.
<TABLE style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 10px; WIDTH: 20px; BORDER-COLLAPSE: collapse; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #f2f2f2" _extended="true"><TBODY _extended="true"><TR _extended="true"><TD style="PADDING-RIGHT: 10px; PADDING-LEFT: 10px; PADDING-BOTTOM: 0px; PADDING-TOP: 10px" _extended="true"></TD></TR><TR _extended="true"><TD style="PADDING-RIGHT: 10px; PADDING-LEFT: 10px; FONT-SIZE: 11px; PADDING-BOTTOM: 5px; COLOR: #999999; PADDING-TOP: 5px" _extended="true"></TD></TR><TR _extended="true"><TD style="PADDING-RIGHT: 10px; PADDING-LEFT: 10px; FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-SIZE: 11px; PADDING-BOTTOM: 10px; PADDING-TOP: 0px" _extended="true"></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
Vilma, who was hurt in New York's loss at Cincinnati last Sunday, missed practice all week and was listed as out on the team's injury report Friday.
"This is a not a career-threatening injury and the doctors expect a full recovery," said Mitch Frankel, one of Vilma's representatives.
The loss of one of their defensive captains is the latest disappointing development in what has become a season full of them as the Jets have struggled to a 1-6 start.
"I am disappointed that my season ended prematurely," Vilma said in a statement. "I was looking forward to playing the rest of the season and helping the team get back on track. I now look forward to supporting my teammates for the rest of the 2007 season and returning to the field with them in 2008."
The Jets would not announce the exact nature of the injury or which knee is affected. The linebacker underwent several tests during the week and sought multiple medical opinions before deciding to end his season. He's still mulling his options regarding treatment.
"After reviewing all of the information available, the best thing for Jonathan and the Jets is to place him on injured reserve and turn his focus to rehabilitation and the 2008 season," general manager Mike Tannenbaum said.
Rookie David Harris (http://www.nfl.com/players/davidharris/profile?id=HAR362681), the Jets' second-round draft pick out of Michigan, is expected to take Vilma's spot in the starting lineup Sunday against Buffalo. The hard-hitting Harris has 24 tackles in limited time this season.
"Vilma's a great player," Harris said earlier in the week. "Anytime that you lose a player like that, it's very hard to fill his shoes. He's a great team leader. He's very well respected and he has run the defense for four years now. I'll try to be ready when my number is called."
Since being chosen in the first round of the 2004 draft, Vilma has played in every Jets game and started all but two. He established himself as one of the best playmaking linebackers in the league and was selected for the Pro Bowl following his second season in 2005 after leading the league with 187 tackles.
The last two seasons have been a different story for Vilma, who has struggled along with a number of other players to be as effective in coach Eric Mangini's 3-4 defensive scheme. He was fifth on the team with 39 tackles.
"Jonathan is a leader and has always done everything he can to help this team win," Mangini said. "He's diligent in his preparation and has always unselfishly taken the time to share his knowledge of the game with his teammates. I know that he will approach this challenge with that same type of effort and focus."
The announcement Saturday ends a strange week for Vilma and the Jets.
<TABLE width=260 align=right _extended="true"><TBODY _extended="true"><TR _extended="true"><TD _extended="true">
</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>Vilma spent part of the second half of last week's game on the bench and Mangini said Monday that Vilma, who had only three tackles, was "dramatically affected" by an unspecified injury.
During his weekly spot Tuesday on a sports radio station, Vilma said it was "a coach's decision" and wasn't due to any injury -- perhaps not wanting to violate the team's policy about not discussing injuries. On Wednesday, Mangini said he spoke to Vilma and explained the thought process, adding, "Sometimes you're going to see it differently as a player and as a coach. We'll just have to see how these tests go."

I would offer the jets our second and 4 rounder for Vilma plus the Jets 3 round pick. The Broncos then move DJ back to the Will or Sam. The Broncos look at Conner or Rivers in the first round. The Broncos new linebackers would be Williams,Vilma Conner.

Vilma and Williams side-by-side again would be nice. I won't get my hopes up about it happening, but it's nice to imagine.
