Sharpe words for Tony G on the record

So what was Shannon Sharpe’s message to Tony Gonzalez for breaking his record for touchdowns by a tight end?

“Congratulations,” Sharpe said Sunday on CBS. “Now, all you need to do is win a playoff game.”

Ouch.

Of course, Sharpe was only needling Tony G. In fact, Sharpe was the first person to leave an actual message on Tony G’s answering machine on Sunday.

“I’ve known Tony for such a long time and we are such good friends,” Sharpe said, “and when he broke the record I was in the studio watching the game, and I gave him a call.”

Sharpe and Gonzalez then appeared together on SIRIUS NFL Radio on Monday.

“I think the thing for me is that coming from Savannah State, being a seventh-round draft pick, I really didn’t expect to have any records,” Sharpe said on the show. “So for me to get a record it was an honor. But to have someone break it, that’s what they’re there for. I feel good. I’m at peace with it.

“I’ve accomplished everything I wanted to accomplish. Now I’d like to see Tony win a couple of playoff games and get an opportunity to play for a Super Bowl.”

When Gonzalez actually phoned into the show, Sharpe snapped, “Why didn’t you call me back yesterday, man?”

Gonzalez, laughing, responded, “Actually, I checked your message on the way to work (Monday). Obviously a lot of people called me. But one thing, Shannon, you were the first person to call me. Before my mama even called me. That’s the type of guy Shannon Sharpe is. He’s a good one.

“You know, last week, towards the end of the game we’re getting beat and we’re going to lose the game and we’re driving down there against Jacksonville. We were down there in the red zone and I remember I was thinking to myself, ‘I don’t want to break the record in this way.’ I wanted to get the record in a fashion where we actually won the game and it actually meant something so I’m glad that it came at home. My brother was there, and a lot of my family and friends were there. It’s good to get the victory first and the record second.”

Quotable Shannon

Sharpe also delivered some good lines on CBS’ “NFL Today” Sunday, such as this one: “The girl that delivers my newspaper has a stronger arm than Chad Pennington.”

Mushroom.

I had a mushroom pizza at Boston's in Grapevine.

I was just over there. We wanted to stop by California Pizza Kitchen.

I had a Chipotle veggie bol today for lunch. Corn salsa, rice, pinto beans, poquito pico de gallo, cheese, sour cream, and topped with guacamole. Eaten with chips like a dip.

Beautiful.

There is a win/loss column for records? I know there is one for playoff games and Super Bowls of which Sharpe is 13-5 and Tony G is 0-3

It's in Cherry Creek. It's pretty good but spendy. I haven't been there in a number of years but there were a few Elway items scattered around but not as much as I would have liked to have seen. Maybe it's changed a bit. I'd be up for getting a bite with ya if time allows. Bunch of us from here got together over there a few years ago. Good times!

lol...Just tapped into the old archives. Look at this odd bunch at the dinner table.Ha! http://orangeforceone.com/photos/Elways/index.htm

We tried the valet service but it didn't exactly work.Hilarious!

I went a few years ago right after Christmas when I was out visiting. I thought it was quite good. I'm a big prime steakhouse fan, I've been to a lot of them all over this great country and thought Elway's was pretty good overall.

You knothead ... that article is pure red-meat incitement for chefs fans. If you had DirecTV like me, you wouldda seen THREE SEPARATE CBS halftime shows by that panel. Sharpe was VERY gracious, PERIOD. He mentioned all three times he had called and left TG a message congratulating him right after it happened. Said on at least two of the times that he and TG are good friends. As is the tenor of such panels, the conversations then deteriorated into personality-driven jests, in which Boomer, Cowher and Shannon played with some ballpoint pen that apparently said "Greatest TE Ever." He JOKINGLY said - at the end of the ONE panel shot, when personality-driven humor is always the focus - that now TG should win a playoff game. In another, Menefee asked "who's the best TE ever?" Shannon paused, and said, "well, that would be me." Cut to commercial.

On the topic of sportsmanship, a better question is: Why would Gonzales not return the congratulatory phone call that night?

BTW: Strangely silent, on all 3 panel shots I saw, was Marino. On the third, in the midst of all the guffaws, Boomer asked Marino, "what do you think, Dan?" Dan responded lukewarmly toward Shannon, "God bless you."

Possibly the best steak I ever had was a Strip at Del Frisco's.

Didn't know the Duke had a steak house also!

And what's with the thread title? "DEFEAT"?!

Yes, and Edwin E. "Buzz" Aldrin was also gracious in defeat. Sadly, he was just the second man on the moon. :~ohyah!:

I know it's a chain, but the best steak I ever had was at Arnie Morton's on Restaurant Row on La Cienega in LA.

Yep ... my family is constantly praising my cooking on the grill. With the right preparation even average meat can be quite tasty.

A friend of mine had me over for dinner, and she cooked some salmon with BBQ sauce spread ontop. I don't eat much fish, but I'll have to say that it tasted great. Best fish I've ever eaten. ;D

lol, Chicago or BroncoSteven?

What's the biggest steak anyone has ever had? I was at a restaraunt in Tacoma Park in maryland and this BIG dude sits down and polishes off a 56 oz. porterhouse steak that was nearly two inches thick. I turned green just looking at him stuff it all down. He followed it with three backed potatoes (the works) and a giant ceasar salad.

Personally a 14oz is huge for me, and I usually cut it into portions. Love the center cuts, sirloins and strip steaks especially.

Here's a pic of me drowning my sorrows in a 50 oz Porterhouse at the Trail Dust in Westminster after the 2005 AFC Championship. Notice how thrilled my mother in law looks.

I wonder if Tony ever thinks about coming to Denver so he can win a Superbowl like Neil Smith did?

Sucks to watch any great player rot away on a joke-franchise like that.

Poor Tony will just have to enjoy his stats, because that's all he'll have.
