Broncos to release Lewis
By Bill Williamson The Denver Post
Article Last Updated: 10/15/2007 12:54:35 PM MDT

D.D. Lewis at Broncos training camp in August 2007. (Hyoung Chang | The Denver Post)The Broncos informed backup linebacker D.D. Lewis today that he will be released, an NFL source confirmed.

Lewis competed for a starting job in training camp, but was beaten out by Nate Webster. Lewis, who did play on special teams, signed as a free agent from Seattle in April.

Releasing Lewis will give Denver one roster opening. The Broncos worked out nine linebackers last week.

Hey Shanny you ****ing cut the wrong linebacker!

That's too bad. He can play the run. He's a decent player. I think the only reason Webster beat him out was because Nate was better against the pass. Sad to see him go, good luck to him.

Does this have anything to do with the Mewelde Moore rumor? Another possibility is that they need to make room on the roster for Rod Smith's return...

Well, it could be Rod or one of the LBs they worked out or Moore, who knows. Hopefully not a trade for Moore tho, LEAVE THE PICKS ALONE, SHANNY, STOP THIS ****!!!!!

I wouldn't be surprised if it was more motivated by Webster's longer tenure.

Lewis should have at least been given a shot in the regular season, Webster is a scrub.

Last I heard from Shanny's press conf. when asked about R. Smith. He said he's not ready or even near football shape. Unless a week made a difference for the great Rod Smith , I dont see that one playing out just yet.

They cannot cut Gold at present because the regular season has started thus his salary for this year is guaranteed and still counts against the cap as does any accelerated hit for outstanding signing bonus. Bottom line if they cut Gold this week they'd be pretty close to busting the cap.

Well, as I said, I don't really care about the money It's more that the front office is acting like a chicken with its head cut off. Signing random people, cutting people on a whim, making nonsensical trades. It's all reeks of desperation and cluelessness. We used to be a smart, solid franchise with a reputation of competency. That seems to have all gone out the window in the last year.

What the heck are you talking about??? This isn't the freaking Raiders, do you think that Shanahan that knows the cap situation of every team and potential FA doesn't have plan when it comes to his own roster. The guy was back-up LB that never saw the field. This more likely the option to get Rod back on the active roster or bring in depth at the for ST.

They've done that for years especially along the D-Line. They've rarely had to touch the LB positions for a few years up until this season when Al was cut.

Going into training camp Moore was a starter at LB, then got injured and was cut, then Holdman won the job and got injured, then Webster got the start. Shanahan's been throwing darts at a wall for FA's for a long-time in positions of need.

When's the last time we paid decent $$ for a FA Offensive Lineman or Defensive Lineman???

We like to groom our own offensive linemen and although we've a decent OL that can make plays in the open field they're just like gnats once we get inside the 10 yard line and get pushed around like Amon Gordon on a good day.

Until this team invests decent draft picks or FA money in big linemen they'll struggle to go anywhere.

Not true. Check today's denver post. They have 3 weeks from the date he starts practicing to clear a spot for him. And the date he starts practicing can be any time from now until the first week in November....so they have until Thanksgiving roughly to decide his fate for this season.

From the OP:

Lewis competed for a starting job in training camp, but was beaten out by Nate Webster. Lewis, who did play on special teams, signed as a free agent from Seattle in April.

Its stupid that he didn't play on STs, he worked his way into Seattle's starting crew through his special teams play, but we didn't use him. AT ALL.

How stupid is that? We go out and sign a guy who had a burgeoning career at one point, was a valuable special teams contributor, started on a team that probably should have won the Super Bowl before he got injured, and was considered an all around pretty solid linebacker with injury concerns. We don't even let him get on the field.

Its not a horrible move in light of picking up Beck. We primarily need get younger period and look to retool the linebackers. Beck helps with that. But to not even give Lewis a taste of Sunday action over Gold or Webster, both of whom have been pretty unimpressive, is just senseless. Or keeping Louis Green, who hasn't done anything in his several year stint with this team to make him work hanging on to.

There's too much of a bias towards longer term players by this management staff. Nate Jackson gets a roster spot out of camp even though he's never stayed healthy for example. What exactly did Webster do to earn an uncontested starting spot, other than sign a cheap extension? Nothing that I can see, but apparently that takes precedent over putting the best possible talent on the field.

In fairness to the coaching staff to make any sort of call on the LBers because they starters are still adjusting to the scheme and most of the times they're getting swamped with OL, FBs, and TEs.

I think the coaching staff just want to give an extended run to the starting LBer to see if they can adjust or not. How long does that take?

I don't think even they know.

BRONCOS SIGN FREE-AGENT LB JORDAN BECK; RELEASE LB D.D. LEWIS

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos on Tuesday signed free-agent linebacker Jordan Beck, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The club also on Tuesday released linebacker D.D. Lewis.
Beck (6-foot-2, 233 pounds) is a third-year player who joins the Broncos from Atlanta, which waived him on Sept. 2 after he competed in the Falcons’ training camp. Beck entered the NFL with Atlanta as a third round (90th overall) selection in the 2005 NFL Draft from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
Beck has played 15 career games, all of which occurred during the 2006 season with Atlanta. He ranked second on the Falcons that year with 13 special-teams tackles after spending his rookie campaign in 2005 on Atlanta’s reserve/injured list with a broken foot.
The 27-year-old finished his career at Cal Poly as its all-time leading tackler with 449 stops to go along with 16.5 sacks. Beck was the recipient of the 2004 Buck Buchanan Award (Division I-AA’s top defensive player) and twice was named the Great West Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year.
A two-time honorable mention all-state selection on defense at San Lorenzo Valley High School in Mount Hermon, Calif., Beck also competed at wide receiver and punter during his prep career. He was born on April 18, 1983.

CAN HE TACKLE? THAT'S ALL I WANT TO KNOW.
