View Full Version : Should This Kicking/Timeout Rule Be Changed?

Seems to be the hot topic lately. Well, what say you? VOTE!
Me personally, I say no, only because how can you really legislate that? Make the rule you can only call a timeout with 'X' amount of time left on the play clock? I don't like that, personally.

No, kickers already have it easy enough. They don't even have to deal with the wider hash marks like college football. Anything that makes life tougher for those soccer playing pansies is good for the NFL.

Never fails to amaze me how underappreciated kickers and punters are by some.

I've been hearing all day from the radio personalities how they "hate the rule" and how it needs to be changed. Why? Whats the big deal? Whats to keep the players from doing the exact same thing.
So the player stands right next to the ref, and calls the time out right before the snap... so what? Does it really matter if the player or the coach is doing it?
THEN... Then I heard some BRILLIANT talking head suggest that maybe there should be a 'ten second rule' how do you determine that? Ten seconds from what? They can snap the ball at any time, so where do you determine the 10 seconds from? How do they enforce this "time limit?" Will it be reviewable?
I've never heard such whiners. Some day its going to work the opposite direction, and instead of the baby Raider fans crying their eyes out and calling us "unsportsmanlike cheaters" because their kicker misses... they will be thanking us because their Polish sausage missed the first one and got a second chance at it.
Not to mention.. if the NFL LIKEs drama and excitement.. HOW exciting is it when these kicks have had to be kicked a SECOND time!?!? I mean THAT IS EXCITEMENT!
Leave the rule, I like it.

It's going to be awesome when somebody misses the field goal the first time and makes it the second. That might put an end to it.
But yeah, I agree, you can't legislate some rule. Especially when sometimes, QB's call last second TO's all the time, if something happens, see something they don't like, etc.

I think you can.
"Team B isnīt allowed to call a timeout within the 2 minute warning (or OT) when Team A (the team with the ball) has set in a Field Goal formation".

of course this coming from a soccer nut fan. It would be hard to legislate the practice. The team has the timeouts so who says they cant use them how they want? I think they cant use them twice in a row w/o a play being called even though the schmuks didnt realize that last night on MNF. If it wasnt for that timeout, we would have one win.

It has **** all to do with the sports I follow, no matter how hard you try to spin it, I am simply saying that kickers and punters and what they do is underappreciated by some for reasons unknown to me. Some people act like theyīre entirely unimportant and you can sign any bum off the street, which simply isnīt true.

What? so that means if Team A puts in a FG formation with 5 WRs, you can't call a TO in order to secure yourself from a fake? What determines a "FG formation"? Seems any team could then simply use that rule to have a huge advantage. What if I see we have 12 men on the field??? I can't call a TO in order to avoid the penalty? Can the kicking team call a TO???
No no no. That just won't due at all. Teams have been calling TO before kicks for 40 years.

It worked against the Bills last night, so why is there an issue at all? If I were a kicker I would like to actually be able to take another swing.
To me this is the same as arguing for the overtime system to change. If you deserve to win, you should be able to stop a team in OT. If you are a good enough team, you should be able to make the same kick twice in a row.

Heck no!!! The coach does not know if the guy is going to make it or miss it, calling a time out might cost him the game if the dude misses his first and nails #2.

Particularly the past few weeks, I have heard fans state that the rules needs to be changed. But not me, I think it is a great strategy if you have that one time out with which to play. So let that kicker look to the sideline wondering if the TO is coming.
Also, here in El Paso, I acutally heard a few 49er, Steeler and Cowboys fans call it the Shanahan Time Out. Thought that was cool.

When Alex Karras was asked how to cut down on field goals, he responded with, "tighten immigration laws".

Ok, as the fan of a team that has both been hurt and benefited by the rule I gotta say leave it the way it is.
You can make an argument that is not really very sporting but what the hell else is new in this game?
A coach has the right to call timeout is the bottom line here.
It adds to the drama, it adds to the excitment.
BTW **** kickers.

I don't like how football has become too specialized. It's not fair when players bust helmets all day fighting for every inch on the field and some cupcake like Martin Gramatica trots out on the field with a clean uniform and decides the outcome on a 50-plus yard field goal.
I know kicking-punting isn't easy, but if these guys are such great athletes, let's see them on offense or defense. It will never happen again, but I long for the days of George Blanda, Lou "The Toe" Groza, Sammy Baugh. Bring back the kickers-punters that contributed in other areas of the game.

speaking of this, anyone remember the Doug Flutie drop kick field goal from a couple of years ago?

Amen!
I like Mark Schlereths take on this. Kickers are football players and are paid to do what they do. You expect your left tackle to protect the QB's blind side all the time, you expect your QB to make that second throw just like the first, why not expect your kicker to make that second kick. It's what he's paid to do.

I like how Cowher brought this in in 1994 and it's been used in the league every year since, but suddenly it's a big deal when it works for us. I said it's before, but it's because it happened right after spygate and everyone's stuck on their fake moral grounds. It's absurd, there's nothing wrong with calling a timeout.

Steelers have done it for years. check out the playoff game vs the jets in 04. If you dont want your team to fall privy to it, then snap the ball with time left on the clock rather than waiting for it to dwindle to a few seconds when a coach can anticipate it

in reality, it probably is time to raise the crossbars 5 feet to make field goals less attractive options, and to bring touchbacks out to the 25 or 30. that would really minimize the kicking game
wabbit

Absolutely not!!
There's equal probablity a kicker misses his first and hits the second, or the other way around.
It's strategy, no less than any time-out designed to 'freeze' a kicker...timing is just part of the mind game.
...and changing the kicking game more than it already has been altered is, in my mind anyway, foolishness.
The league already moved the goalposts back and narrowed the frame, started the KO's from the 30, required new, hard, slick footballs specifically for kicking.
Cripes, why not play music and make 'em dance while they kick...fans could hold up cards awarding 1, 2 or 3 points for performance (assuming the kick was good).
If you want to change anything in the kicking game, elimiate the XP, or at least move the XP kick to the 20...what a joke that is...make the two pointer more attractive.

Are you nuts? How else do we score points? We wold have been shut out against Chargers. I think we need to go retro and bring them up to the goal line again.

so if there is time left on the clock why can't you take a TO?

So you realize you have 12 guys on the field on defense but you can't take a TO? Just give the kicking team more yards (or a first down)?

You know the first time this happens in reverse (miss first then makes it) will be against the Broncos. That will be funny as hell. Pulling a Shanahan against the Broncos and it backfires.

I seem to remember something happening in reverse between Tampa and Indy...the game in which Tampa was blowing out Indy and in the last few minutes Indy scores a boat load of points on the vaunted D (it was the beginning of the end of the Tampa D). In fact. the idiot kicker missed the FG, but then he got a second chance (and got to continue is record streak of consecutive FGs).
Actually, I may be wrong, he may have gotten a second chance because of a penalty (a Tampa player used another player as support to jump higher and attempt to block the the FG). Maybe it was NE that got a second chance, they seem to always get that horse shoe up their ar$%...unless they are playing Denver, then they need the Broncos to use their 3rd string QB for the horse shoe to work.

I still say that if you do not want this to be an issue, dont wait till there are five seconds or less to snap the ball. do it at 20 seconds or thirty or whatever so coaches cant anticipate it.
