View Full Version : Rivers calls Broncos defense "Vanilla"
Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers has looked at how the Broncos defense has played this season and dubbed it - "vanilla," meaning the team hasn't blitzed all that much or strayed too far from its base 4-3 look.
Asked what struck him about the Broncos defense when he looked at it on video this week, Rivers first commented on the team speed, then offered "how vanilla they've been. I say that with red light flashing - we'll be ready for anything. They've really just lined up and played. You wonder if some of that is intentional."

This qoute should be posted on every defensive players name plate.
"Vanilla"
I swear... I hope Bates throws everything at them.

He's right. And posting it on players isn't going to change the problem.

The way our defense is playing right now Rivers probably won't even need to pass the ball tomorrow. I'm expecting lots and lots of Tomlinson.

Rivers has actually played pretty well this year. The Chiefs just have his number.
He completed 15 straight passes against the Packers two weeks ago.
Come on, this isn't going to do a thing for them. Hell, if they can't get up for D-Will while saying they are playing for his memory... nothing will.

I can't really comment on how "vanilla" the Broncos defense is, but I can tell you that what he's describing is exactly how our defense looks right now. Maybe he's just expressing anger at our defense and using your team as a way to outlet his frustration at our DC.

Um, the great Hugh Millen once completed 20 passes in a row. Seriously Boob, is this how you really think about football?
Rivers has been given more responsibility in the offense under Norv, and to this point he is failing to make the right reads consistently, and he is making terrible decisions.

Nothing to extrapolate from his comments. He's described the Broncos D to a T.

I am thinking D is more runny, dripping ice cream. Vanilla flavor? Who cares! It is all down the shirt and toppings stuck to my face.

Yeah. Last year the defense started out Vanilla when we just stuck to our base defense and were able to stop teams from scoring because everyone knew their assignments and executed them well.

I'd call our D Swiss Vanilla. Similar to French, but with holes running all throught it.

Rivers should be thanking our D for his starting role in SD. If we don't injur Brees at the end of a meaningless game two years ago Rivers is probably playing elsewhere right now.

I actually think that Rivers might be right. The question is the Denver defense simple because they don't know their assignments or is it part of the way Bates wants it to be.
I'm really not impressed with Bates so far, because he might not have his preferred type of players in the system, but a good leader/manager adopts to folks he has on hand and put them in the place to succeed. IF the current personnel are better in zone and 8 in the freaking box blitzing then that what he should do, vs. attempt to play his style!

I hope we take Rivers and rub his facemask in the dirt multiple times. After that cocky s*** that he pulled at Mile High last season, I want him in serious PAIN.

Jeez, it wasn't THAT bad. It's not like Jake flipping off the crowd or something.

If by "vanilla" he means "plain, soft, and melts easily" -- I must totally agree.
Vanilla. That's the nicest thing anyone has said about our D all year!

I can't believe the D let Rivers call them vanilla and then let him drive down the field and run it in himself.

Vanilla would be a major upgrade over this trash. I must admit I stayed home today playing hookey from the game cause I had better things to do. I watched about 3 minutes before getting sick and turning off the set.

Calling our defense vanilla reminds me of the Ali-Foreman fight. After George beat on Ali for 5 - 6 rounds, Ali whispered to George "Is that all you got George". George said to himself "Yes thats about all I got"
I think what we have been showing the NFL on defense is about all we got. We know what happened to George and I don't think the Bronco defense has any better fate.
