It was a question asked in the Peter King mailbag. There is absolutely nothing to this rumor at all. Jake Plummer is done with football, he is no longer the QB of this team or any other team in the NFL. That is all.

I agree he's probably done, but I'm not so sure I'd be so adamant about it unless you actually knew the guy. There have been a lot of QB's who were "done" and then reappeared from nowhere.

All everybody has been talking about is how the Bears need somebody to protect the ball. Why would they want Plummer? Sure, if they could catch lightning in a bottle and get Jake to have a year like he did when we went 13-3, the Bears could win the SuperBowl... But that's a big if.

Wow. the post on that page is pretty telling though:

Before we go into another 3700 word essay on how wrong Mike Shanahan has been in ALL his decision making, we give you this:

You were right all along, it really was Jake Plummer that held Denver back last year, not the team, not Shanahan, it was all Plummer. How did we come to this conclusion? Well it was quite easy actually, after watching today's game against the Colts.

We simply compared Jake's numbers last year against A BETTER Colts team to Pumpkin Pie's numbers this year, here's what they look like:

October 29th, 2006 vs Indy

Jake Plummer:
QB Rating: 104.1
Comp/Attempts= 13-21 for 174 yards and 1 TD and ZERO Interceptions
1 Fumble lost

Final score: Indy 34-Denver 31

September 30th, 2007 vs Indy

Jay Cutler:
QB Rating: 75.7
Comp/Attemtps= 13-21 for 131 yards and 1 TD and ONE INTERCEPTION
1 Fumble lost

Final score: Indy 38- Denver 20

Another clue for the "let Plummer play" aka "fireshanahan" guy... we still lost to the Colts with Plummer, too. So what if the 10-year veteran had better stats (in one game... why didn't he cite stats from the playoff losses? 'Cause they wouldn't support his preconceived idea, so he cherrypicked instead) than the virtual rookie while losing? The only stat that really matters is the "L" in the win/loss column and the Colts put plenty of those in the record book against Plummer.

Beantown Bronco

Because Cutler cost us any chance at comparing playoff stats with his pick-6 in the finale last year....:stirstir:

No, he didn't include Plummer's other stats against the Colts because those stats wouldn't support the skewed picture he was trying to paint... point is the guy has an agenda and cherrypicks only the stats he wants to use while omitting the ones that clearly show he's FOS.

I dislike the guy as much as anyone, but in this case it was more proper to compare the stats of last year's game to this year's game because the two Indy squads are essentially identical. When you start talking about games against Indy from 3 and 4 years ago, you're talking about rosters that don't even compare.

Perhaps Indy's roster was "essentially identical"... but ours was not. For instance, Plummer faced Indy with Al Wilson at MLB and we had a solid run defense. Also, the "tools" Indy used this year were quite different than the ones they used to beat us last year. The '06 and '07 losses really don't compare any better than the others.

The guy knows this, too. He's just cherrypicking stats to diss Cutler because he hates Shanahan.

You're citing the defenses, which actually performed identically in the end (giving up the same # of pts roughly) and thus really had no difference in impact between the two teams. Both got torched. One got torched through the air; the other on the ground. Neither was a crutch to either QB more than the other IMO, so take them out of the equation.

On the other hand, how about the offenses surrounding the two QBs? Would you rather go to battle against Indy with Cutler's supporting cast from last week, or Plummer's from last year's game? OLine is more or less a wash. No Hamilton, but no matador at Right Tackle. Better starting RB this year. No Walker this year, but Stokley and an improved Marshall make up for that. I would give the edge to this year's TE situation.

My contention is that the letplummerplay aka fireshanahan guy is a tool who uses cherrypicked stats to support a foregone... but skewed... viewpoint. He's FOS and so is his webpage. :P And probably, so is this "rumor".. Ha!

That's debatable. Some people want to say that as of today, after just those 9 games, Jay is already better than Jake. In order to debate that, one has to look at these "common opponents" and see how each fared. So far, Jake has the edge if you are comparing their performances against just Indy.

Why are we wasting all this energy and 'bandwidth' on a debate that will essentially not take us anywhere! Plummer isn't coming back to our team and Cutler is our QB now and for the future. Woulda, coulda, shoulda, stats, stats, and more stats are not going to change that. I was one of the biggest Plummer homers in support of him, but times have changed and it's time to leave this argument behind. It's not changing anything!

Now, Plummer in Chicago, that we can talk about! But, I tend to think he's probably very happy being OUT of the limelight!! :sunshine:

Fair enough. But his edge is very small in that regard. Jake had maybe 30 more yards passing and did not have a Int but it wasnt a mind blowing difference. It would seem the closer score had more to do with us being at home more than anything else.

Apologies - turns out it's actually the Cardinals who may be going after Plummer now that Leinart is out. This is from the AZ Republic:

Meanwhile, you should know that the Cardinals need to sign another backup quarterback, and for the record, General Manager Rod Graves would not rule out trading for the "retired" Jake Plummer.

"It would really depend," Graves said. "I think Ken (Whisenhunt) would have to feel comfortable that Jake would fit what we're trying to do here. But I certainly wouldn't rule out anything at this point."
