ENGLEWOOD — The Broncos worked out five defensive players Tuesday, a group that included linebacker A.J. Nicholson, a fifth-round pick by Cincinnati in 2006, and cornerback Derrick Strait, a third-round pick by the New York Jets in 2004.
The Bengals waived Nicholson in May after he pleaded not guilty to a domestic-violence charge in Kentucky. Nicholson then agreed to a deal that included community service and a parenting class, which, if completed, would result in the charge being dropped.

Nicholson had served 60 days in a sheriff’s work camp in Florida after being charged with breaking into the apartment of some Florida State teammates.

Strait, a former Thorpe Award winner as the nation’s best defensive back while at the University of Oklahoma, was released by Carolina earlier this month. After being released by the Jets during the 2006 season, he also played briefly with Tampa Bay and Chicago.

The Broncos also worked out former Washington State cornerback Wale Dada; cornerback Therrian Fontenot, cut last month by Cleveland; and cornerback Carlos Hendricks, with whom Tampa Bay reached an injury settlement after he hurt his knee.

Meanwhile, former Broncos tackle Chad Mustard was scheduled for workouts in St. Louis and Detroit on Tuesday.

Looks like we're sifting through the scrap heap desperately looking for some solutions for the _efense...Oh, and we might be at the end of the "cut the Mustard" game...

I'd be pretty happy if they didn't come within a country mile of signing A.J. Nicholson.

A.J. Nicholson was a damn good OLB at Florida State. He doesnt have super timed speed but he can really play. I remember when he had 3 INTs against BC. He is, as the article suggests, a thug, though.

I'd be happy to get an axe murderer if he could play linebacker.

Hey Shanny, maybe you can bring in O.J. for a look, while you're at it.

Nicholsen has a lot of potential. I know the Bengals didn't want to cut him but since he had legal problems and with the problems they have been having in that area they pretty much had to.

I think what we are seeing is the "curse of the mustard"

I bet he would not have dropped that 4th down pass last week.

Of course he prolly would not have been open either ;D

I agree. How do we know he wont try to steal somebody's superbowl rings? Can you trust him in your buildings and locker room?

Great...any time anyone from the team has a freakin' BBQ they have to worry about this guy stealing their stuff and Travis Henry knocking up their girlfriend/wife.

Nicholson on this team with three guys already on edge but doing a good job so far staying straight. This could tip some over the edge with his influence. Don't want that anywhere near our team.

I mean you even risk losing draft picks if he joins the team and commits a crime under Die Furer Goodells regime.

Strait can probably play a little safety or we might move Foxy back there and this guy would take the nickel spot.

I missed big time on Strait. Loved him coming out of OU. I think you are right that he might have success at S, although he's running out of chances.

He started for a while with hermie...and the Jets were really high on him, then all of a sudden he wasn't on the roster anymore...never did figure that one out.

Ya Champ can be the first MLB\FS\CB-Special Teams ace ever...

God bless Champ and all that he does for this team...Guys like Champ and Doom-ervil prove over and over again that your heart is the strongest muscle in your body, and with that you can accomplish anything you set your mind too..

Yep, our front 7 lacks some serious heart right now. That was Al's biggest asset.

We really need a WLB too. He could probably do at least as good of a job at missing tackles as IAN.

No I didn't mean it like that and should have chosen my words WAY better. I meant that he is the end all and be all. No team wants to risk picks because he will follow through. I should have known better as that was a completely negative connotation.
