It has become a broken record around Denver, but once again the team is struggling to produce four-man pressure with its defensive line. Elvis Dumervil has been the most consistent player getting to the quarterback. Simeon Rice so far has contributed little and doesn't seem to have the same quick burst off the snap he has had historically. He may be paying for missing all of training camp while rehabilitating his shoulder.

Against Jacksonville, the problem of not generating heat was exacerbated by an inability to contain the rush lanes, too, letting David Garrard run effectively out of the pocket. The issue better clear up quick with Indianapolis next on the docket. ...

The run defense has been porous this season. First, it was a bevy of missed tackles in Buffalo. Gap-control issues hurt against Oakland. And against Jacksonville, there was a combination of both problems. Teams aren't even testing Denver's secondary because they can simply run it down the Broncos' throats. And a rotation system to keep players fresh hasn't helped. Expect more technique work in practices to try and curtail the damage.

SCOUTING REPORT

Brandon Marshall is quickly turning his huge physical gifts into production. Marshall has shown an uncanny ability to "hand-catch" passes away from his body, even on Jay Cutler's hardest throws. He has an innate feel on the sideline and can go up and make the tough red-zone catches on corner routes.

But what has allowed Marshall to make the leap into perhaps a future star is his ability to bust tackles with his 6-4, 230-pound frame. He has a crafty spin move after the catch he'll often use. He also will stiff-arm smaller defensive backs to create separation.

The knock on Marshall has been whether he could demonstrate the maturity to become an integral part of the offense. That has yet to be an issue after irking Mike Shanahan in training camp with a lingering quadriceps strain. And he isn't missing assignments, an issue early last season.

SEE A DIFFERENT GAME

One of the ways Dumvervil has been able to succeed despite a lack of height is his long arms and ability to gain leverage under taller tackles by extending them. But hand play is just as important, and this year he incorporated some taekwondo techniques he learned from his father, who was a black belt.

The Broncos followed suit in training camp, inviting a martial-arts school instructor to apply those principles to pass-rushing technique. In one drill, each lineman stands in front of a partner, and the two go back and forth trying to get their hands on each other (or keep them off). Dumervil at times works after practice on those facets.

when is Coach going to get pissed at someone for going for kill shots instead of wraping up !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would cut a player a week untile they got the idea in training camp ! I would show all the tackles that champ made last year at the start of training camp and tell people do you plan on making the team ? Then start cutting anyone that does not wrap up one by one to show that it will not be tolerated.

Ditto.
No update on Lynch or Cutler? I am really interested to see what the status of Lynch is.

I haven't been able to watch any of the games but i'll agree with you...you learn to wrap up back in pee-wee..as basic as fundementals get..you wonder if the coaches yell or do anything about it when a guy consistantley misses tackles!!

Being out of position and/or out of control is the problem. It's not tackling know-how. The linebackers are missing/or late getting to their assignments.

Riddle me this: Why does DJ have to be the defensive signal caller? I vote for getting Champ involved in lining them up.

The reality is that the defense is going through some growing pains and this was loss number one and Sunday will be tough though not impossible.

Wabbit....what is your assessment on Gold's play this season so far? Are there any rumblings about his play or lack there of? Thanks Wabbit.

Gold's pass coverage is above average, his tackling is dismal to non-existent and his rush defense reads are so terrible that he may very possibly grade out as the worst player on defense.

There really isn't anyone to replace him, although, given DJ WIlliams struggles, it wouldn't be a stretch to move him to Golds' position and put the intensely agressive Webster at MLB.

That isn't what will happen, but, regardless, this is the last year here for Gold...assuming he plays the entire season.

From what I've read about Bates' defensive scheme, i understood it's very simplistic. If that is the case, would someone please explain why is it so hard for our lineman & LB's to execute?

As for the shoddy tackling, this has been a problem for quite awhile. Not sure what can be done to correct it other than stress in more in practice.

Here's hoping things start to fall in place soon. It's still too soon to dismiss the season as unsuccessful. But we should know for sure by the end of next month.

Cutler has some soreness you might associate with a mild sprain, but surprisingly little swelling.

Foxworth is improved, and really is a day-to-day kind of thing.

Lynch is more worrisome, in part because of his age. Muscles, ligaments...all the stretchy soft tissues become less elastic with age.

While Lynch has no tear in his groin muscle, he did stretch it pretty badly, and if you've ever done that, it makes it almost impossible to run.

It takes time...perhaps even a week or two with treatment. If you push it, you will just aggravate it more & more.

Lynch will be hard to keep off the field. Here's hoping the coaches have more sense and give him time to heal...at least a week or so.

As much as I hate to see us go into Indy without Lynch, I'd much rather him be healed for the remainder of the season than to push it out there against Indy and be out the rest of the season!

Get well soon, Lynch! We miss ya out there!

LOL tackling is done by one player on the team. Champ and he has never ever went for kill shots or ever tryed to make another player go backwards ever ! and to the person that says there is no tackling issues on this team has no marbels to pull out to play with !!! we have no one like wilson on our team an enforcer !!! Lynch is about as close as we are going to get the rest need to get over themselfs wrap up and get to the down and not let a player ramble another 9 yards on 3rd and 9 yards !!!

Lynch was the last line of defense against the run -- taking up the slack in the middle caused by poor LB ing.

With Lynch out the gut is an open wound...

Maybe Gold and Lynch should trade places for giggles?
