Country music has thrived for years as the soundtrack to redneck America, supplying the Republican heartlands with a diet of knee-jerk jingoism that has included flag-waving anthems supporting the war on terror.

But as the US death toll rises in Iraq and public patience with the conflict — and with George W. Bush — diminishes, many anti-war songs are emerging from Nashville, Tennessee, home of the genre.

No one has moved further than Toby Keith and Darryl Worley, two of the biggest names in country music.

In 2002, Keith had a huge hit with Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue, which includes the lyric: "You'll be sorry that you messed with the US of A, 'cause we'll put a boot in your ass — it's the American Way."

Worley's Have You Forgotten in 2003 justified the Iraq invasion as a response to the September 11 attacks. The military liked it so much he was presented with a flag that had flown over the Pentagon.

Now Keith says he is a lifelong Democrat and has claimed he never supported the war, while Worley has had a hit with I Just Came Back from a War, about a soldier returning from Iraq with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Tim McGraw — the biggest contemporary country star — has a hit single with If You're Reading This, about a dead soldier's last letter home, and the Dixie Chicks, boycotted in 2003 after lead singer Natalie Maines told an audience in London: "We're ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas," won five Grammy Awards this year.

The changing tone reflects a growing scepticism in heartlands that have disproportionately contributed the young soldiers who have been fighting and dying. Brian Hiatt, associate editor of Rolling Stone magazine, said: "Popular music is reflecting the culture, as it always does."

Keith's switch, however, has angered conservative country fans and anti-war activists alike. Jon Iwanski, a blogger in Chicago, said Keith had "damaged his credibility", while opponents of the war accused the singer of opportunism.

Toby Kieth made that claim way before 2004 election , in fact one of the reasons Kieth wasnt at the republican convention ....McGraw was a very outspoken critic during Katrina .... but you are right about country music turning .... I heard the Dixie Chicks song on local radio here in Casper yesterday ;D

something like that ....... what he claimed is he wont go against the war , in support of the troops , then claimed we cant change horses in mid stream , but he actively campaigned for a Oklahoma Democrat running for governor

NORM: Democrat Keith sticking with Bush

Toby Keith says his political views have been mislabeled.

Country superstar Toby Keith wears his patriotism on his sleeve but usually keeps his politics under his hat.

So when a nosy reporter asked him Friday whether he would be in New York next week for the Republican National Convention, Keith could have played it safe.

"You got the wrong guy," Keith said, inviting more discussion on the subject.

When I caught up to him after a news conference announcing his new theme restaurant at Harrah's Las Vegas, Keith cleared the air about some misconceptions.

Because of his running feud with the President Bush-whacking Dixie Chicks, Keith said he's been mislabeled. "All I ever hear is that I'm some right-wing nut," he said.

The fact of the matter is, he said, he's a registered Democrat, but "a very conservative Democrat. I'll always support our troops, wherever the war is."

Without further prodding, Keith, whose 19 No. 1 hits include "Beer For My Horses," made it clear who he was backing in the presidential horse race. "I don't think we should be switching our commander in chief in the middle of a war," he said.

Building on the patriotic messages in Keith's music, Harrah's announced the 17,000-square foot restaurant and entertainment venue, set to open next summer, will offer comped food and drinks to active military personnel.

Heh! Ha!

His lyric sounds like more than just a simple expression of support for the troops:

"You'll be sorry that you messed with the US of A, 'cause we'll put a boot in your ass — it's the American Way."

They owe an apology, and they gave it too. They learned the "hardway" (if that's possible for multi-millionaires) that you don't bad mouth your own country on foreign soil in public.

No, what I am asking is if Country Music doesn't owe the Dixie Chicks
an apology now that the Dixie Chicks have been proven right?
If the radio stations had any decency, they would send money to
the Dixie Chicks to compensate them for lost royalties as a result
of not playing Dixie Chicks records on the air.

I disagree. Nobody owes anybody anything at this point. The dixie chicks apologized for their mistake. But as far as them losing money, they have no one to blame but themselves.

And in turn denouced our country. There really is no place for those types of people. Especially multi-millionaires that live in another world far from where most people live from a financial perspective anymore. Consequently they lost revenue for it, and deservedly so.

You and I are a part of America, but hardly a part of America like the President, or how the President is viewed politically around the world.

I never said "the President equals America". Someone posted that. I believe it was Rob. He makes an interesting point, though it was not his point. The President does equal America from a political perspective. I think by now you understand exactly what I am saying. You also understand why it's a problem.

That's what I remember.

That's their interpretation of it what the chicks were saying and doing. That was how THEY read into it. And that's how it made us all look to them. You may or may not care. I didn't pay it that much mind.

These ****ers are why the only country singer i like anymore is George Strait.

That guy, you don't know whether he is a democrat or a republican, he doesnt do the bull**** awards shows, puts out a new great album every year, and just does his thing and tells the politically active heavily medicated nitwits, who think America cares about what they think on issues, to **** off.

Doesnt do the fancy light shows, or the smoke, or the bull**** at his concerts. He just gets up there, plays his guitar, and sings for his fans. And his attitude is, if you don't like it you can go **** yourself.

I really have an appreciation for his attitude. Only way Id like to find out what he thinks on the issues is if he decided to run for office.

Just doesnt make business sense to me why these entertainers have to make public their views on hot political issues. No matter what you think, you are going to piss half the country off. So just shut the **** up and sing.

One example of that is Bob Seger. I am a HUGE Seger fan. Went to see him in concert last winter cuz he was promoting a new album, no bs, it was the best concert Ive been to. Dude put on a show and he didn't make any speeches. On his new album, he put an antiwar song out, I'm thinking "damnit Bob, not you now. Don't you turn into a friggin douche."

I talked to Vice President Agnew in Palm Springs three weeks ago and expressed my concern for our country. The drug culture, the hippie elements, the SDS, Black Panthers, etc. do NOT consider me as their enemy or as they call it The Establishment. I call it America and I love it. Sir, I can and will be of any service that I can to help The Country out. I have no concern or Motives other than helping the country out.

So I wish not to be given a title or an appointed position. I can and will do more good if I were made a Federal Agent at Large and I will help out by doing it my way through my communications with people of all ages. First and foremost, I am an entertainer, but all I need is the Federal credentials. I am on this plane with Senator George Murphy and we have been discussing the problems that our country is faced with.

Elvis' Letter
Sir, I am staying at the Washington Hotel, Room 505-506-507. I have two men who work with me by the name of Jerry Schilling and Sonny West. I am registered under the name of Jon Burrows. I will be here for as long as long as it takes to get the credentials of a Federal Agent. I have done an in-depth study of drug abuse and Communist brainwashing techniques and I am right in the middle of the whole thing where I can and will do the most good.

I am Glad to help just so long as it is kept very Private. You can have your staff or whomever call me anytime today, tonight, or tomorrow. I was nominated this coming year one of America's Ten Most Outstanding Young Men. That will be in January 18 in my home town of Memphis, Tennessee. I am sending you the short autobiography about myself so you can better understand this approach. I would love to meet you just to say hello if you're not too busy.

Respectfully,
Elvis Presley

P. S. I believe that you, Sir, were one of the Top Ten Outstanding Men of America also.

I have a personal gift for you which I would like to present to you and you can accept it or I will keep it for you until you can take it.

I don't support censorship. I just get very annoyed by entertainers, who might be on one side or the other, who think that we all give a damn about what they think on issues that they have no friggin idea about. And my entertainment dollar reflects that. But in no way do I ever want a law to be passed that would restrict what these retards say. They should have the right to say whatever they want, without any threat of legal action. Now if their career gets hurt because of what they might say, that is their fault. I have absolutely no sympathy for them.

Example, the ditsy chicks, they can say whatever the hell they want, and make total asses of themselves, and should in no way have the threat of legal action against them. But then don't go around and whine and b**** and moan if the cash cow slows down or stops comin cuz you had diarhea of the mouth.

I stand corrected.

They all do it on both sides , some of the biggest names use their pulpit to give out a point of view
Bruce Willis , Alec Baldwin , Billy Baldwin , Tim Robbins , Sean Penn , Dennis Miller .... even Ball players do it .......
Teachers in elementary school ........

you must be a rich ****er. Do you know him?I met him in one of the local water holes a couple years ago, seemed like a really nice guy. He says howdy and waves when I'm heading out from the boat launch.

LOL - glad to see people only see what they want to see - not how it really is.
