In case any one is interested, the Duke's son will be on at 6:30 tonight. The Cherry Creek Bruins play Mullen in arguably the states best HS football rivalry.
Oh, and so this does not get moved and is broncos related. John Elway is the QB coach for Cherry Creek

Man, Creek and Mullen used to dominate in football. Creek, not so much by the time I graduated from Smoky Hill. Don't get me started on Smoky Hill though. lol. I think maybe a couple players on Smoky Hill's teams could play for any other team.
I do wonder exactly how good Jack is though, and if he doens't get press because of his name, ala Eli Manning.

He would join Sal Aunese's son if he went to LSU. Personally though, I'd jump at a chance for an Oregon schollie ... great school, great city, great fans, great team. In fact, I picked Oregon in the "Which College Would You Attend" poll thread. It should be more about the college experience than the football team. Hard to grasp that as a 17-year old with stars in your eyes, but it is.
And why doesn't quarterbacks coach John speak to Jack on the sideline? Jack comes over for the play-call on every single play, but I have yet to see John talk to Jack ... maybe too much nerves. They oughtta seek out the Hawkins for advice.

Probably because the people who do the ratings don't think the offers are legit.

Darn, that's 0-for-3 on the Bronco-kids with Klint at CSU ... is Hawk at all interested in Jack? That'd prolly be a bad idea all around....

From what I've seen, a 2-star QB is not completely out of the ordinary for even larger schools to sign occassionally. Especially not unusual with the "Greatest-QB-Ever" pedigree...

I'd like for him to go to OU, but he wouldn't get to play until his Junior/Senior year at the earliest, and thats redshirting too.
I think he needs some time though. Could develop into something, but who knows. I really do think he is getting more attention because of his name.

I agree Buff, I'm not so sure that 1. Elway is BCS level material 2. That playing College ball in CO is a good thing for Jack. At some point he has to try and get out of dad's huge shadow, which is cast much, much bigger in CO.

It's strange that those are his only two offers....no MWC, no Stanford, no MAC....you'd think that more schools than one of the best in the country (LSU) and one of the flashiest (UofO) would have offered, assuming the offers are real

At this point in the game, 2* QBs don't have offers from high level BCS schools. Those guys are option 4 or 5, and get the offers after #s 1-3 commit elsewhere.
If he has a different name on the back of the jersey, he doesn't have those offers (if those offers are even legit).

Don't know about the rest of you but this kid is pretty solid. Very little time to throw in the early going and was hit on just about every play. He has Daddy's Arm, that much is certain. 6'3 and 200# so he will likely end up in the 6'5 225 range within two or three years.
I think it's bogus he's only rated 2 *'s. He's got more talent than that and you can see that while he's playing against a very good team that isn't allowing him much time to throw.
I'd love to see him go to Oregon. Standford would be too much like dad and he has to get out of Colorado. Oregon really is a good school. Hopefully the kid stays out of the Big12 and goes to the pass happy Pac-10!

I'm also surprised he's not received more offers. From all indications, he's the real deal. Heck, he's been groomed his whole life. I'll bet when Janet was pregnant with Jack she played broadcasts of all John's come-from-behind wins instead.

I don't think it's strange. He looked really average to me. His arm strength was average. His mobility was average. I've also heard he doesn't love the game like his Dad did. Two stars is about right based on those "highlights" I saw.

Were you watching the right game? That kid threw one ball 40 yards down field and it was from the far hash to the far sideline (that's close to 65 yards). He has a cannon. He threw a lot of balls without setting up and looked to have happy feet, but he was also sacked 3 times in the first quarter alone. Mobility wise, he's no Ron Mexico, but he did a good job in the roll outs and slid in the pocket the few times he had the opportunity. When you have a guy in your face all night long and are getting hit on 3 and 5 step drops you're going to look average. Mullen is one of the better defensive teams in the state... especially up front (on both sides of the ball). They control the trenches and tonight was no exception.
Mullen's QB had a good arm as well. Decent footwork (little too much pitterpatter on some throws) but a little on the small side.
You'll find that an arm like Jack Elway's with 6'3 200# size will get you in a few doors. He'll likely end up about the same size as Carson Palmer but amazingly he won't have near the hype going to college.
I can't vouch for his "love of the game". I've seen plenty of 17 year old kids that would rather play video games than study film (:thanku:) but that doesn't mean they lack a love for the game.

I'm most surprised that people question whether the Oregon and LSU offers are "legit." Since when do these two sites publish "phony" offers - especially both sites at the same time? They have reporters on site at each school, and they check with the schools all the time, combing the scholarship offer lists and asking the ADs and coaches about them.
Jack also has an offer from CSU ... (don't scoff - remember Kelly Stouffer and BVP).
Besides, who would fake scholarship offers, Elway?
BroncoBuff
09-21-2007, 07:15 AM
Khan - are you maybe judging his arm strength more by NFL standards? His arm looks pretty powerful to me, for a 17-year old kid anyway, and the Scout site agrees ... in fact they rank him 3-Stars: http://oregon.scout.com/a.z?s=128&p=8&c=1&nid=2878840
In fact, Elway is a relatively high 3-star. Oregon is recruiting THREE 3-star QBs rated even lower than Jack - including one that was offered and committed to Washington: http://california.scout.com/a.z?s=128&p=9&c=5&pid=10&yr=2008
Herc is right on about one thing - they don't give many offers to 2-Star QBs ... look lower on that Oregon QB page. There are about twenty 2-star QBs listed, and only ONE has an offer - which he took!

Quite often. School officials can't talk about recruits by name until after Signing Day because it's a violation of NCAA rules, so the sites really can't go to them to see who does and who does not have offers. The lists compiled by Rivals and Scout are almost always entirely composed of just the offers each recruit claims they have.

He already has a stronger arm than most and when he gets into a college program that arm strength will only increase... not so much in velocity but in terms of the effort it takes to throw. If he throws 100 balls a day now he'll triple that in college. Kind of like a pitcher. Lots of guys will go from HS throwing in the 88-90 range to college and end up throwing that 90-91, but on a consistent basis with less effort.
I can see not saying this kid is the next great one, but there's no reason to say that he doesn't have a strong arm... or the love for the game.
