History

In the 1880s and 1890s, the city was briefly a mining settlement, where gold prospectors panned gold. Denver then became more of a railroad town and a supply hub for new mines in the nearby mountains when rich gold deposits were discovered in 1859. By 1890, Denver had grown to be the fifth-largest city west of the Mississippi River.Denver earned an uusual distinction in 1974 when it was selected to host the Winter Olympic Games, but residents voted down proposals to supply public funding. Today, the city claims to have the 10th largest central business district in the United States. Denver's position near the mineral-rich Rocky Mountains has made energy and mining important sectors in the local economy. It is also home to many federal offices. The city will host the Democratic Party's national comnvention in 2008.

History

In the 1880s and 1890s, the city was briefly a mining settlement, where gold prospectors panned gold. Denver then became more of a railroad town and a supply hub for new mines in the nearby mountains when rich gold deposits were discovered in 1859. By 1890, Denver had grown to be the fifth-largest city west of the Mississippi River.

Ironically, while Denver was just a bunch of miner's tents, Pueblo Colorado was already a well established city.

The current city of Pueblo represents the consolidation of four towns: Pueblo (incorporated 1870), South Pueblo (incorporated 1873), Central Pueblo (incorporated 1882), and Bessemer (incorporated 1886). Pueblo, South Pueblo, and Central Pueblo legally consolidated as the City of Pueblo between March 9 and April 6 of 1886. Bessemer joined Pueblo in 1894.

The consolidated city or Pueblo was once a major economic and social center of Colorado, and was home to important early Colorado families the Thatchers, Ormans and Adams.

When the D&RG was first forming the population of Pueblo approved a $150,000 bond to help with railroad construction. Canyon City also approved a $50,000 bond for construction to their site. But, the General decided to build to Pueblo first. This move may have been to facilitate the line over La Veta Pass and into the San Luis Valley. These were the earliest days of the railroad and they were just starting out. At the time, General Palmer wanted to build a railroad south to Santa Fe, NM and eventually on to Mexico. Pueblo was directly on the path to the south. So, construction began and the first train came to Pueblo in 1872.

CF&I was a major employer in Pueblo and a firm of enormous importance to the industrialization of the West and played a pivotal role in the history of American labor relations. The company’s roots stretch back to 1872. General William Palmer and his colleagues in the Denver and Rio Grande Railway (D&RG) wanted a local source for steel rail for their expanding narrow gauge empire. Several subsidiary companies were created by the D&RG, including the Central Colorado Improvement, the Southern Colorado and Coal Town, and the Colorado Coal and Steel Works companies. These companies were created to secure the necessary natural resources essential for the production of iron and steel. In 1880, the companies were consolidated into the Colorado Coal and Iron Company (CC&I). CC&I merged with its chief rival, the Colorado Fuel Company, in 1892 forming the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company.
Historically the other major employer in Pueblo was the State Hospital, established in 1879, which formerly served the entire state.

Until a series of major floods culminated in the Great Flood of 1921, Pueblo was considered the 'Saddle-Making capital of the World'. Roughly one-third of Pueblo's downtown businesses were lost in this flood, along with a substantial number of buildings. Pueblo has long struggled to come to grips with this loss, and has only recently begun a resurgence in growth.

Were it not for that flood, today we may have well been cheering on the Pueblo Broncos.
