It's becoming clear why the Broncos broke the bank for Daniel Graham.

After two games, the former CU and Thomas Jefferson High School star has been a difference maker in the offense. Graham, who signed a five-year, $30 million contract during the offseason as a free agent from New England, has been a devastating blocker and a big reason why Travis Henry is the NFL's leading rusher.

Coach Mike Shanahan praised Graham for the second consecutive week Monday after his performance in the Broncos' 23-20 overtime win over Oakland.

"The unsung hero in this game was Daniel Graham," Shanahan said. "He dominated the line of scrimmage and gave us 60 minutes of unbelievable football."

The game was another sign of Graham having little trouble playing with asthma, which his agent said he was diagnosed with in high school.

"He did a heck of a job considering he does have some asthma," Shanahan said. "For him to play a complete game and to be in motion as much as he was kind of gives you an idea of how important this is to him."

One of Graham's Boulder-based agents, Kevin Robinson, said Graham has long overcome the issue. Graham has been a spokesman for dealing with the affliction, and Robinson said he plans more involvement in the future.

"It has never affected him at all," Robinson said. "Daniel lived with it for a long time, but it has never gotten in his way of being an effective player."

Marshall a blocking hero

Second-year receiver Brandon Marshall has 10 catches in two games. But Shanahan is particularly tickled with Marshall's blocking ability.

"The thing that went unnoticed was how he dominated in the running game," Shanahan said. "Not only is he doing a good job catching the football, but he helps in the run support and that gives you a good chance to have a good running game."

Injury update

Shanahan said cornerback Domonique Foxworth and defensive end Tim Crowder should be able to practice this week. Foxworth missed Sunday's game, and Crowder has missed both regular-season games. It was the first game Foxworth missed since he started playing as a youth.

"It made me nauseous," Foxworth said. "I hated not playing."

The team is hopeful backup safety Hamza Abdullah will be able to practice this week. He left Sunday's game with a hip flexor.

By the numbers

After two games, the Broncos lead the NFL in total offense, passing offense and passing defense.

Henry leads the NFL with four consecutive 100-yard games. Kicker Jason Elam needs eight points to reach 1,700 career points. He has played 222 games. Gary Anderson holds the NFL mark for reaching that plateau the fastest. It took him 248 games.

The 53 gross yards passing that Denver allowed Oakland were the second-fewest in Shanahan's 13 seasons with the team. The 72 gross yards passing Denver allowed Buffalo a week earlier is tied for the fourth-fewest in Shanahan's tenure.

A breakdown of Oakland's 253 yards Sunday: It got 162 on seven plays and 91 on its 49 other plays.

Footnotes

As expected, the Broncos re-signed tight end Stephen Alexander and tackle Chad Mustard was released. It was the third time Mustard was let go by the team since Sept. 1....Shanahan said he was surprised to see Josh McCown playing Sunday instead of backup Daunte Culpepper. McCown had foot and finger injuries last week. ... Shanahan said backup Tony Scheffler continues to make strides after suffering a foot injury.

Brandon Marshall is like a better, cheaper version of Dwayne Bowe.

He owned on all his assignments vs the faders you can't ask much more from a TE..

I like that Marshall takes obvious pride in his blocking. He was upset with himself for missing a block on Young's long run.

Ive been watching Daniel in games, hes so powerful

He holds his blocks like no bodies business, once hes engaged the defender cant get off his block.

seems shanahan is using graham mostly for just blocking, even though i have seen graham go out for some routes but cutler had to pass to someone else cause they were open or caused me was being rushed, but graham did a nice job of picking up a blitz in the buffalo game to give cutler time

I think it's fair to say that Marshall has dispelled any notions that he is soft. He certianly doesn't play soft. I was a little worried I have to say when he was limping around all offseason but it looks like he really is a player.

But seriously... adopt-a-bronc rights to Daniel Graham #89 are soley those of Dr. Broncenstein. Any attempt to reproduce said rights without the expressed written consent of Doc B are strictly prohibited; and punishable by a sentence of teh ghey or teh suck for a period of up to 5 years.

That is a very smart move by Shanny. Graham is an exceptional bnlocker and Cutler doesn't read as fast as he will in a couple of weeks. Denver is better served keeping blockers in to protect now. LAter in the year Cutler will make defenses pay when they blitz, now he just needs time.

I did notice that in OT, when we got into Raider territory, the formation set was Marshall at WR, 2 TE's, FB and Henry. My brother was like "Where's Javon? Get him in the game?" Then I reminded him how well Marshall blocks and he agreed, but said we needed him out there.

Why is Mustard going to kill someone? He gets the game check. Alexander didn't get ****.

Nah. They have both bought into the game......

How do you compare Marshall to Bowe? I don't recall seeing Bowe play, so it is a serious question.

Big, physical receivers. That's a comparison, but I'd rather have Marshall.

wonder if graham is mad that shanahan promised him to be more in the recieving game and so far he's mostly just blocking, but it probably depends on the opponent and the game plan, maybe later in the year he will get more pass plays as cutler becomes more comfortable

Yea he is playing well, but why are we not getting him the ball in the red zone?

Yes ... he looked like a man among boys. Like a HS senior playing with a junior high team.

On one play he blocked down - then turned around and saw the play was still going - and went back and blocked down again, punishing the same poor bastard... :~ohyah!:

Where's the poster here who during the off-season kept saying we should sign Graham, it would save us a roster spot ... ?? I owe that guy a beer. Might've been Clockwork.

I've been wanting Graham in Denver since the 2006 offseason when the Pats were shopping him around.

Not only do we save a roster spot because Graham can block and catch better than both these chumps, but we get a locker room leader with great intanglibles and solve our TE problems for a couple of years with Schef/Graham.

I mean you DO realize that Alexander is a FA after 2007. We'll have to sign another TE then anyway. Why not do it now with one of best blocking TEs out there and actualy make our two TE set a threat rather than a joke?

I've had enough of this team carrying 5/6 TEs every season and all of them sucking.

That's cool man. I'll take you up on your offer the next time I'm in Seattle or Denver. Sorry, can't be any more specific than that because I'm living in Dublin, Ireland so that's the best I can do!

Or better yet, donate whatever it is to a local charity - the money, NOT THE BEER! Hilarious! But don't feel like you have to.

Hope you have a rocking time on Thanksgiving for MNF.
