(AP) ENGLEWOOD, Colo. The Broncos have added another captain to go with Lynch, Champ Bailey, Tom Nalen and Jay Cutler.

"I had the captains come to me and said that they did not feel right not having Rod Smith as their captain," coach Mike Shanahan said after Wednesday's practice. "They know if he would have been healthy, he would have definitely been one of our captains.

"Rod Smith has been a leader of this football team for a lot of years. Even when he came in as a free agent he handled himself just like a captain. It gives you an idea of what type of captains we do have to want Rod Smith as part of the group. I thought it was a heck of an idea."

The receiver is on injured reserve as he continues to recuperate from offseason hip surgery.

Badass...So, will he take the field for the coin toss and everything, or what?

He gets a C on his jersey when he comes back

That is awesome, he is still a consumate leader. He should be walking out for the coin toss.

To me Rod Smith is the heart & soul of this football team. God I hope Rod can come back and prove all the naysayers wrong. He epitomizes to me what being an NFL player is all about and truly one of the all time great Broncos. Great move by the other captains.

Well, yeah, but they made him one now, as opposed to when he came back. I was just wondering.

Isn't Rod on the PUP list where he can come back after 6 weeks (game 5 as I understand it) and not injured reserve where they are out for the season or have I missed something?

He's on the PUP, not IR.

Nice move by the players, however I don't think Rod makes this team after week 6. I hope I'm wrong, but I just don't see it happening for him.

Very nice. This team has great leadership and chemistry.

This team has the ability to do great things this year. That will include a Rod Smith comeback.

Enjoy the ride.

There are few players on the Broncos that deserve the kind of respect that Rod Smith does. It shows that the rest of the team knows it. I can't wait to see him on the field again. And see him in the Ring of Fame and HOF where he belongs.

I am very proud of the team"ness" of this team. Props to Rod Smith and the Broncos :sunshine:

Did anyone notice Rod hovering around Shanahan during the game on Sunday? I thought it was pretty interesting and I even noticed Shanny talking to him on a couple of couple of occasions when the Broncos were on offense...seemed almost like he was consulting with him.

Rod should become a coach and be groomed to replace shanny whenever it is time....

Rod is the captain with or without the "C", but if he does comes back, who's "C" does he take? Nalen's or Cutler's?

Assuming what I heard was true, that each team only gets two C's on each side of the ball.

Rod WILL be back!! And, I believe the team believes that. Otherwise, they would not have made this move!

I would see Rod as an assistant coach for WRs and get trained to go into OC-type positions.... Frankly, I would see him going onto the college ranks first.....

If Rod can come back and contribute we will have one helluva WR corp. Going 4 wide will be a serious threat to any defense. Add N Jackson, Scheffler, or Hixon to make a 5 WR set and that could do some damage to!

However, if Rod comes back who do we cut? Brian Clark?

Even if Rod is the 4th WR, he's still more than worthy of the 'C'.

My guess is that he takes Cutler's C because I just can't see him taking Nalen's.....maybe they go "Honorary" with him....who knows?

I always thought Rod was the Capt. on offense before all this C stuff anyways

There's no limit to the number of Captains you select so they can have three offensive captains. Nalen has never wanted to be a captain as this was his first year, so I think if they were going to go with just two it would be Rod and Cutler, but really no one is giving their Captain status up. They are just adding Rod.

Whether Rod is a captain or not, he's a leader. Players don't need "C" on their jersey to get the go-ahead to be a leader. If they have the respect of their teammates, that's all they need...

RE: Rod coaching: It would be awesome if he wanted to do that - it's a HUGE time commitment, but he'd be a natural.

They'd start him off as a WR assistant - same track as Keith Burns. At some point, he would have to go off to the college ranks for a few years if he wanted to be a HC.

Why don't we have a special teams captain this year?

Talk about a group that needs a galvanizing leader.

Alot of the players are new. They are rotating the "C" based on the prior weeks performance. It like a player of the game award. Plus players are rotatiing off and on the special teams.

hopefully his walker won't get caught in the grass.

a very nice gesture, to be sure, on behalf of the current C's.

i think the nfl is allocating up to 5 captains per team. I think Denver has said that they are alternating the 5th amongst the special teams players. Elam was named captain in Buffalo. So Rod will probably take that 1
