DEVELOPING STORY: Russian news agencies cite the Kremlin as saying that President Vladimir Putin dissolved the government Wednesday.
Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov asked the Kremlin to dissolve his government, Russian news agencies reported, with less than three months remaining before parliamentary elections.
Fradkov made the decision based on "the approaching major political events in the country and a desire to give the president full freedom in making decisions, including personnel," Fradkov was quoted by ITAR-Tass as saying. A Kremlin spokesman could not immediately comment on the report.

President Vladimir Putin dissolved Russia's government Wednesday in a major political shakeup ahead of parliamentary and presidential elections, the Kremlin said.
The dissolution is expected to result in a new prime minister, who will be seen as Putin's choice to succeed him after he steps down next spring.
The newspaper Vedomosti, citing unidentified Kremlin officials, reported that Sergei Ivanov, a first deputy prime minister and a leading contender to succeed Putin, could be appointed to replace Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov.
Another first deputy prime minister, Dmitry Medvedev, who is a top executive at natural gas monopoly OAO Gazprom, is considered the other leading contender.
Under the constitution, Putin has two weeks to propose a new head of government, which the lower house of parliament, the State Duma, then has a week to vote on. Russian news agencies said Fradkov would serve as acting prime minister until the vote.
Fradkov said he asked for the dissolution of the government because with elections approaching, Putin needed to have a free hand to make decisions, including those concerning appointments.
Parliamentary elections are scheduled for Dec. 2, followed some three months later by presidential balloting.
"You might be right that we must all think about how to structure the government so that it better suits the pre-election period and prepares the country for what will happen after the parliamentary and presidential elections," Putin said.

Like CBS or MSNBC? They are credible...;)
Russia wont spin back into communism...it will be a little worse than that. The other day Russia unveiled the Dad of All Bombs...weeks ago they were going to start rebuilding their strategic bombing capability and have redesigned their ICBM's...they get aid from the west and this is what they do with it.

:Broncos:No it won't.
It's OK, they're just answering Bush throwing away the arms treaty and wanting to plant missiles on Russia's border. Once he's gone things will calm back down.

Wow, you are naive
Why hasn't this been sent to the OT area or the Butt yet? Seem when I make a post that is even SLIGHTLY off topic, it's over there in 5 minutes. Why some people or posts get treated differently is unreal. This is about OT as it gets. Sorry, but right now, it's full blown Bronco season. Not Putin season. I don't really care about Russian politics at this point. Not on this board anyway. I can go to CNN and read this stuff.

Putin has brought the Soviet Union back into power by allowing organized crime to freely operate international arms trading and drug trafficking. This has brought a lot of dirty money into the Soviet Union but also has infused some life into the economy. This move probably means that he's putting some of these thugs into leadership roles. That's just a guess, but regardless, I bet he's going to institute a very corrupt government.

This is NOT Putin dissolving the Russian constitution or otherwise radically changing the government structure.
It's simply a bureaucratic juggling act designed to put them in a better position for parliamentary elections (at which point a 'new' government takes over anyways) and the upcoming presidential balloting. Their government is something closer to the British system, with elected parties as opposed to elected individuals. So these types of changes are hardly unheard of.
I don't trust Putin one bit, but this isn't what you think it is.

The only reason Russia has money is oil revenue. The price of oil is high so they are making a lot of money right now.

Uh huh...I mean the russians themselves saying it must mean I must be making it up. Nato expansion began in the middle 1990's...no Bush then...honoring treaties with a USSR...when there is not one... is retarded. But only in a liberal's head does "arms control" with a dead empire make sense.

So in other words Russia doesn't have to abide by any treaties the USSR
signed with the US either. I guess this means they now have the
green light to abandon the IMF and SALT treaties and work on
rebuilding their nuclear forces.

:Broncos:Uh, what country over there do you think controls all the ICBMs? Only a right wing Bushman would think it's a good idea to ignore previous missile treaties and incite Russia back into an arms race.

Already happening. Russia is boasting they have a new ICBM that can
elude any conceivable missile defense, are threatening to pull out of
the IMF treaty if Bush goes ahead and build a missile defense system
in eastern Europe, and just recently unveiled a fuel-arm bomb they
claim is as powerful as a nuclear bomb. Plus Russia is planning on
building four aircraft carriers and has a joint deal with India to build its
latest fighter jet.

i think this is the america-sole actor fallacy. putin's demagogic anti-democratic push is a push back into antagonism, not only with the west, but with many other nations too. and as he makes russia less free he knows he will rely on national resources+military more. don't forget there are decades of disputes and fighting w/ china impending for russia in central asia. for which even if no1 shoots u will want to come to the table w/ some nice weapons.
