View Full Version : Anyone worried about Elam?

He could of easily missed 3 FGs sunday. He hit the upright and it luckily went through, hooked a 50yd and hit another that went to far right.
He did come in and hit the game winner in the last second which is incredible.
I was watching the game at the bar and didn't hear how the weather conditions was like. Was it windy? Alot of swirlling winds?
If it wasn't the weather causing him to miss, should we be worried? This is not very Elam like, he was a automatic under 40yds. The game shouldn't of been as close as it was.

No...
Coming off one of his best seasons and now he has a new holder. Give him time to adjust. He made the game winning kick under extreme pressure.
Why is everyone so worried? No kicker is perfect, but Elam is dang near that!
Not having Jake on this team hurts only Elam.

So are we blaming this on Todd? He looked good holding the ball for Elam.
Holding the ball is not rocket science. You catch the ball, put it to the ground and spin the ball so that the laces are away from the kicker. I know its a little more complicated than that, but since when did any team dedicate a roster spot for a place kicker holder?

I was shaking so bad during that play, so I totally understand. I hope to not see it again either but will take it over a loss.

Damn, I was chain smoking after that play. My heart was just pounding... I don't ever want to see that again. Something like that is not good for the heart. I wonder how many people fainted across colorado when the ball went through the upright?

Eagles did it last year.

The Broncos dedicate a roster spot every year to Mike Leach. (Long Snapper) Leach, that guy who ran and retrieved the ball for Elam, is a team player whose done nothing but great stuff for the Broncos and we are lucky to have him.
Todd sucks but we love him so his fat ass better start getting it right. Elam essentially fired Todd in 2005 for Plummer.
The more I learn about what he really does the more I appreciate what he does.

Maybe they should bring Leach in to play center when they use the shotgun formation.....

On his first kick, Elam got knocked down (which IMO should have been at least a 5 yard penalty from what I saw) and afterwards he appeared to be limping a little bit. It's possible that had something to do with it.

Didn't he pull his hamstring last year and leave us without a FG kicker for like 2 weeks? Forced us to go for it on some 4th downs in a game we lost if I recall.
He gets paid alot of money to kick a ball 3 or 4 times a week. He should be able to do it without injuring himself.
Yah, I'm worried. Not saying we should replace him just yet, but he's not the young sniper he used to be.

They said something about the snap or the hold on the first one was bad. On the 2nd he just missed.

To answer the weather question. It was rainy off and on and it was muggy out. I was reading on the Bills chats and most the fans who were there said there was zero wind.
The 50+ yarder I understand and the 40 I think was just bad form and rust. When it was clutch time Elam was the same. I am not too worried.
I am more worried about Sauerbraun. He has been hitting a lot of kicks of the side of his foot and not getting deep kick offs. Not paniced just noticed he has been doing that in the preseason and game one.

Thank you ApaOps... thats what i wanted to hear.
I'm not worried about Elam myself, there are only a few kickers i want kicking besides Elam.
I wanted to be sure if there wasn't any other condition affecting Elam. Somebody noted earlier that Todd screwed up on the hold is why he missed the 40 yarder.

I'm worried. But I think I'm spoiled -- we've been so accustomed to Elam being automatic, even at long range, that we now demand nothing less. And Elam will almost certainly provide less and less as he ages. That's life.

Elam has been nothing but great for us for over a decade. He made a thrilling game winner just 2 days ago.
There is no reason why any Broncos fan should be doubting this guy now. Give Todd sometime to get those laces out quicker, we'll be fine.

Over the last 3 years, Elam has kicked so much that he has begun to put english persay on his kicks. The game winner if you look at it closely was a straight kick, due to the fact he didnt have time to think. If you look at all his other kicks, his foot is open more than it should be and he will play them left to right most of the time. He needs to revert back to the early days when he just kicked the ball. He picked up the habit a few years back with several windy games in a row

Kicking's a mental game...and if he misses Plummer holding for him it's possible he's thinking to much. I expect he'll get more consistent as they go along but hopefully the transition won't cost us a game somewhere.

Man you aren't lying when you say the kicking game is mental. Did you watch the Ravens-Bengals game. The Ravens kicker who is like 42 has 4 large red notebooks. Inside details on every kick he has made in the NFL. Damn talk about analysis.

I was there. Wind was not a factor. Not even a slight breeze. But judging by how many players slipped and fell on their ass, he may not have been confident in his plant foot. Not worried, he'll get back into his old groove.

Our potential HOF kicker makes one of the greatest kicks in recent football history, is tied for the longest FG in NFL history, and is coming off one of his best years in his career....... and we are worried. This is what I love about being a Bronco fan. We demand perfection. Love being a fan, would hate to be a player.

Not worried about Elam at this point but he isn't a spring chicken anymore.
What I'm wondering about is the status of Rod Smith? He wasn't healthy last year and played through the pain but where does that leave him this year? We owe him some loyalty to a point but what is the opportunity cost of keeping him around if he can't produce or stay healthy enough to play anymore? Ok Rod lovers time to kick me in the shins for suggesting Rod is done.

Honestly, I know Rod is getting up there, but I believe he is a fighter. I have high hopes and expect that he will be back for the second half of the season! I don't think he feels ready to be done, and if he's not ready to be done, I don't think he'll give up quite so easily! I think he's got another year...at least!!!

Marshall had an All-pro type catch for the only TD Sunday.
I love Rod and hate to see him go but unless Stokely gets hurt before the 6th week of the season I am not sure that there is a spot for Rod anymore.
It sucks because he is only active roster guy that I have an Autographed Jersey of. Oh and because he seems to be a good guy and meant alot to the team and stuff...but mostly the 1st sentence.

My intentions of starting this thread wasn't to demand the release Elam or draft another kicker next year.
Elam wasn't his usual self sunday and was worried to why. Whether it was the weather, rust or Todd that caused him to miss those kicks.
Again, there are only a few kickers I would have kick fg for the broncos besides Elam.

It is hard to kick 5 times in one game. I think only a handfull of kickers in this league have the stones to run out on a fire drill and make the game winning kick like that.
I am glad we did not do what KFC did with their Place kicking situation.

You can trot out all the stats you want but he still makes me nervous on long ones anymore. I guess I'll keep that to myself from here on out because I never realized Elam was in the "do not ever question" group of players along with Lynch and Bailey before.....now I know.

As far as the weather, the flags on the goalposts on the last kick were not moving. I'm not worried though. Elam's been consistent throughout his career. Occasionally he misses 2 in a game, but still does very well over the course of the season. Besides, with :04 left, he ran back to his position - once the holder got on the damn field - and then kicked the game-winner straight down the middle. You can't be more clutch than that!

There are a lot the stats don't tell, the conditions during the game, how well the snap gets there, and how the ball is set.
Leach has been very consistant though.
Elam will be fine, the big plus from the last score he put up to win the game in an unbelievable 10 seconds was strait on. I am pretty sure the other two he was angling it in from the hash marks where this "english" might have come into play, I really haven't noticed and will look for it next game when the camera is on him.
I am only upset at Randy Cross and his stupid "heavy air" comment. Yea it helps to kick the ball in Denver in the light air for distance, however that has nothing to do with accuracy. Elam had the distance.

Yeah, this year, so far, the stats aren't that pretty. But we are talking ONE game. That's the only reason why I support him. When I start to see consistancy in him not making his kicks, then I'll start to worry.
Yeah, that's all well and good but the fact of the matter is he's made me nervous from 40+ yards now for a couple of years, not games. All the stats in the world isn't gonna ease that feeling, only not seeing him miss those will and , by the looks of things, I'm far from alone in feeling that way.

A lot of the hostility towards Stokley around here comes from him basically taking Rod's spot as the #3 WR.

I love Rod too...As much as I would love to see him make a comeback, I think Stokely has his job.

I'm more worried about the rest of the special teams.

Right, but what those stats show are that your feeling has absolutely nothing to support it being a rational feeling... either that or you had an overinflated sense of security with Elam every other year. I'll say this again, the last 4 years have been Elam's best stretch in the NFL... there are numbers that back that up. All you have is a "feeling" in the pit of your stomach. It's not that he's "untouchable" from criticizm, but every player should be "untouchable" if you have absolutely no facts or evidence to back up your criticizm.

Elam misses a few here and there, but he's Nestle when it's crunchtime. I believe he had a little trouble with Sauerbrun (may have been Ernster) holding back in '05 leading to Plummer doing the holding. I definitely know he had problems when Rouen was let go. I'm not worried about Elam, it's the coverage teams that worry me.
