Thread title was tongue in cheek - sort of.
Seriously, what do you think about this? If true, it seems pretty shady.
Sources: Camera confiscated after claims of Pats spying on Jets
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3012989
NFL security confiscated a video camera and its tape from a New England Patriots employee on the team's sideline during Sunday's game against the Jets in a suspected spying incident, sources said.
The camera and its tape were placed in a sealed box and forwarded to the league office for investigation, the sources said.
"We don't have any comment," an NFL spokesman said Monday.
The Patriots' cameraman was suspected of aiming his camera at the Jets' defensive coaches who were sending signals to their unit on the field, the sources said. The league also is investigating some radio frequency issues that occurred during the game.
The league's competition committee could conduct a conference call about the incident, which violates NFL policy, and ultimately recommend a penalty that could cost the Patriots a future draft pick or picks if it verifies that the team was spying on the Jets.
"It's not their first time," a member of the committee, who did not wish to be identified, said.
In fact, Green Bay Packers president Bob Harlan confirmed a similar incident that occurred when the Patriots played at Lambeau Field last Nov. 19. The same cameraman who was questioned by NFL security on Sunday was also the one whom the Packers removed from the sideline and escorted from the field during their 2006 game, according to Packers security official Doug Collins.
"From what I can remember, he had quite a fit when we took him out," Harlan said. "We had gotten word before the game that they [the Patriots] did this sort of thing, so we were looking for it."
A Jets official declined comment Monday, directing an inquiry to the league office. The Patriots also did not have immediate comment.

I'm not quite ready to jump on the bandwagon, simply because this kind of stuff is what the Broncos were always getting accused of during their Super Bowl run. Some of this just comes with success, in my opinion. Other organizations get jealous (ahem, Al Davis), and they start looking for things to whine about.
That said, it seems sort of lame - at best. If they indeed were doing it, then I would be interested to know if any other teams are doing it, as well.

Filming the defensive coaches calling plays isn't something I would consider ethical. If this character is in any way associated with the franchise, somebody needs to be hung out to dry.
The comment regarding the radio frequency issue is something which has happened to the Broncos while visiting the Deadskins. It is something which tends to bother me a bit more than hand signals, but still......it's cheating if intentional!

Oh, here we go. I LOVE when Chiefs fans start whining about the Broncos cheating. It's sad, irritating, and pathetic - all at once.
Those Chiefs - they do it right! They nickel and dime their players to death. They take advantage of loyal fans that show up, win or lose (although, apparently that is changing). They support management that is so inept, it's embarrassing. And that Carl Peterson just stinks of integrity - he doesn't come across as sleazy at all!
You're right! We're envious of your team because you guys are beacons of integrity who "do it right."

And speaking of the Chiefs, how's it feel to be a fan of a team that may be the worst in the league this year? You know the team - it's the one that isn't really suffering through a rebuilding year. No, they just generally suck. And they look like they're going to suck for awhile.
Has the Brody Croyle era started yet, or is it already over?
Did getting an Insider's perspective from Hard Knocks inspire a bunch of confidence in Herm Edwards? I kind of thought he came across as an incompetent fool. I've seen national media people write the same thing.
One good thing, since I am a "glass-is-half-full" kind of person. I thought Larry Johnson was going to end up having microfracture surgery this year. If I was him, I would already be setting the appointment with the surgeon, so he wouldn't have to wait to be seen. As it turns out, it looks like you guys will be getting blown out so much, LJ might only carry the ball 150 times or so.

According to league spokesman Greg Aiello, “No video recording devices of any kind are permitted to be used in the coaches booth, on the field, or in the locker room during the game.”
I think most fans even know about this rule. That's why they have to use photographs to go over previous plays.
There is no way anyone can spin this and make it out so it's not cheating. It's directly violating a league rule. What happens in the MLB is irrelevant.
http://www.metrowestdailynews.com/homepage/x266403503
Within hours of reports surfacing that the Patriots stole defensive signals from the Jets on Sunday, league-wide speculation ran rampant on how far reaching the accusations are.
Lions and Packers officials intimated concern yesterday that the Patriots were, indeed, stationing cameramen on the sideline to film coaches signaling in plays last fall. And a high-ranking Bills official confirmed last night that an investigation is ongoing to find if suspicions that similar actions by the Patriots took place in the teams' two 2006 games hold water.
Several other teams are believed to be conducting similar investigations.
I hope they nail the Patriots on this, if true. This is just the icing on the cake of all the classless things Billy and company are now infamous for.

Logic dictates that if there was nothing on the tape, the answer would come back quickly. If there WAS something on the tape, then the answer would take longer because then they'd also have to decide on an appropriate punishment.

NFL teams play all kinds of games with opponents. Back in the mid-80's I lived in Ventura CA for two years and the Faiders used to practice at Oxnard, which is right next door. Crazy Al covered the 6' high fences around the practice field with black plastic so nobody, including the local kids who wanted to watch...could see what his team was up to. I remember a story once about a team hiring a scout to climb up into a tree that was located near the practice field so they could spy. I think most of this stuff is just paranoia generated by this kind of stunt. I just can't imagine the Patsies are so stupid they'd put this dude right in front of the Jets' bench with a 40 pound video camera. If you really want to video tape somebody, you could use an 8 ounce digital camera the size of a cigarette pack with an electronic zoom hooked to a wireless internet hookup. You woudn't even need a recording medium like a mini DVD to do it either, so there would be no evidence. This is Belilchick F'n with the Jets coaches IMO.

I'm surprised that it took them this long to catch the guy. When I shot the Broncos/Chargers game last year, I was walking behind the bench to get to the other side. I saw a good shot, so I stopped to take the shot. A sideline official instantly told me that I could not shoot from behind the bench. I walked off and there was no problem. The guy was quick in letting me know that it was not allowed. So how does a guy get away with filming from behind the bench? How is he not stopped? Maybe some sideline officials are taking a little payoff to look the other way.

NFL Demands Answers From Belichick On Spying Charge
NFL Investigating Accusations Coach Signals Were Taped
BOSTON -- New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick has been summoned to New York by the NFL Commissioner, SportsCenter 5 reported Tuesday.
SportsCenter 5 reporter Mike Dowling said Belichick has been called for a meeting Friday with Commissioner Roger Goodell to answer allegations that a Patriots employee was videotaping New York Jets' coaches signals during the season opener on Sunday.

To quote Superbad - "Prepare to be ****ed by the long dick of the law".

I think losing a draft pick isn't harsh enough.
Goodell has set a precedence to anyone violating NFL rules. Belichick needs to serve a suspension for me to be satisfied.

Apparently we're one of the 6 teams that have caught them spying. It's great that Belichick can steal Shanahan's signals and Shanahan still owns him.
The league already gave the Pats a written warning over this, and given what happened to Wade Wilson as a reference point for suspending coaches, Belichick is going to have extra golfing time pretty soon.

This is just incredibly stupid if it's true. There's no way I could have ever imagined the Patsies were this dumb...if you wanted to steal signals, why would you put a guy right down on the field with a huge camera in plain sight? Why not position some dude up in the rafters inside some locked room with a telephoto lense and a wireless encrypted feed for the signals?
Bellichick's accomplished a whole lot but if this is true my opinion of his IQ just took a huge hit.

Take a first and a second from them.
But I'd still like to see something happen THIS season. Draft picks won't effect their potential success for this year. Dirty-ass cheaters.

Rumors are floating that they may have been tapping into the radio frequency for when the coach calls in the play to the QB too. *If* that is true, that deserves nothing less than a lifetime banishment from the game.

Man....I CANNOT WAIT for the next game between these two. We'll need a poll next time for what happens at the end of the game:
- Mangini and Belicheck meet in the middle and square off fight club style.
or
- They simply flip each other off from the sidelines and walk to their respective locker rooms.
Get your tivo ready.

I think they should let Mangini and whoever else they have spied on have ten minutes with Belichick and a baseball bat.
I still want a suspension though.

Do you guys really not think Mangini was a part of this back when he was there too?
If it comes out he was stealing radio signals, this thing should explode. The Detroit Lions could be SB champs if they knew what every play was going to be before it happened.

Because it's so obvious that no one in their right mind would do it? Maybe it's that kind of twisted logic that kept them from getting caught so many times before.

At the very least the league needs to forfeit Sunday's game to the Jets since the Pats were quite obviously cheating.
Think about it. A player gets a 4 game suspension for illegally gaining a competitive edge. What should an institution get for illegally gaining a competitive edge? I'd say Bellichick should be gone 4 games, the organization should be heavily fined both monetarily and with a minimum of a 1st round or equivelent draft picks. Think about the players who were probably in on it. Tom Brady for one. If Bellichik whispers into your headset "the weakside OLB and strongside corner are blitzing," you can't be dumb enough to think he's just a genius and can guess stuff like that.
I won't pretend to be impartial, because I have always loathed the Patriots, but to me it puts an asterisk next to all their accomplishment since Bellichick came on board.

The first two won't have that big an impact in my opinion simply because Bill will find a way to get his plays and planning to his team. And the organization getting fined? They have the money and they won't care. What you got to do is take away their lifeblood, which is why the last option should happen. Take away their first day picks. Or at the very least their first round picks.
Classic 400HZ. Good find bro. Even better if you made it.
At first I thought it would be hard to believe they would listen in on the radio signals. But after now knowing it's a good chance they were stealing signals, and have been warned about it before, I don't think it's so unbelievable that they would try and listen to the plays the other team was calling. Especially since Mr. Genious is the defensive mind over there. Man of man, if they find out and get proof they were doing that, you can put the biggest and boldest * next to each of the Paties championships. And all of those great players will have some type of shame to live with, even if they didn't have any part of it. They will look at those rings and say, man, this aint worth $hit now.
We'll see how this all unfolds. If they can prove the signal stealing, yeah, it's got to be a huge fine, #1 pick next year and maybe even a suspension for Mr. Genious himself. If it's proven they listend in on radio signals......ohh, forget it. Genious is kicked out of the league and they forfit their entire draft next year. You might even see some players gone if they were in on it or knew about it.

The thing that doesn't make sense about this is that you'd have to have players in on it...probably more than just the QB...and those guys could talk once they leave the Pats. In any case...unless they can come up with some pretty creative explanation...they're rep is crap from this point on.

Rumor tonight on ESPN, that they could forfeit a pick, or multiple picks. I hope they also are wise enough to make them forfeit the cap space for rookies provided by those picks that are taken away. Otherwise, the Pats could win in this situation by just using the extra cap space to sign a quality free agent.
The Broncos lost a third, for not "FUNDING" an annuity for Elway... Not circumventing the salary cap. I wish all of these "experts" on football, the cap, and competitive advantage could understand what they so proudly hail as the "facts".

Is the Mastermind so smart, he gave the Patriots fake signs, since he knew they were stealing them..... hmmmmmmm... one has to wonder....

I think thats probably the biggest point most people are missing in the Pats' defense. A ton of players leave that team annually, with plenty of new incomers to boot. Do you really think no one has squealed yet? Its not like they haven't had their fair share of bad blood departures.
Its not that hard to keep this from the players, they just can't use it to win that game in particular, which would be hard to work out anyways. The coaches though can take that footage and combine it with the areal cam every team gets to study for game film and basically recreate the Jets' defensive playbook.
They were warned once for using game film that included audio, obviously with the intention of deciphering audiables, imagine how much more damaging it would be if they knew coverage and blitzing patterns.
I'll hold judgment on the rumored radio frequency infringement until its actually supported in some way, and without proof that their actions on Sunday helped them beat the Jets that Sunday you really can't make them forfeit a win. You can severely damage their future with heavy draft pick sanctions at the same time make Bob Kraft sit up and take notice by attaching a heavy financial fine to go with it. Kraft is a businessman first and foremost, if you fine him heavily he isn't going to take it happily, no matter how many billions he's sitting on. They'd tighten up the ship real quick.
Personally I think the moment something like that happens Belicheck will pack his bags and plan his departure. He's seemed like he's got one foot out the door as it is, no way he sticks around for the **** storm if the league follows with heavy sanctions.
