View Full Version : New Season so should older posters be rewarded ....
and be able to use avatars of their choosing for the season. We could even have old school and bring back some of the old classics like So Cal's dancing women.
It could be considered a perk for longevity.

I am gonna go against popular sentiments and request that the avatars not be brought back. One, they are nothing but soft porn for the most part. There are younger people come on here and are greeted by these examples of the objectification of women as nothing more than a source of sexual stimulation is not the message a Sports Message Board should want to convey.
Two, the site slows down so much with the avatars and sigs that it interferes with the overall enjoyment of the site for the larger share of posters and readers.
Third, the quantity of posts are not necessarily related to the quality of the posts. I give you boob and Mock as examples. Therefore, to use BS as a measure of much of anything is still BS.
I oppose the proposed renewed use of avatars and sigs.

This is a good idea. I think everyone who has been here for awhile understands why I had to axe the avatars once training camp started. I was extremely pleased during the draft to learn that axing avatars and doing a few other tweaks reduced server resources by a sizable chunk.
I like the idea of using avatars as a reward. I'm going to explore the settings and see what the best way to make that happen would be.

TJ, on another site you had to get to a certain amount of posts say 1,000 or so before you could get an Avy. Then a mod had to add them so they were right in size and what not. Just something to think about.

rock paper scissors. I dont know which one i would bring back. Maybe I would save the Barry Bonds rookie card when Mock gets back so he can tell me about how he donates money and that the photo is rude. Man Goblin avatar should never come back. Hey TJ: here is the easiest way of letting avatars back. Those who contributed (donated) money to help speed up the server, should also be rewarded with what they helped pay for. This would of course publically show who contributed (some might contribute but not use the avatar). Normally I would say no to "showcasing" those that contribute and show up those who didnt/cannot, but the donation went to exactly to why avatars are gone...... speed. Either use those that did donate or have a separate donation of $5. It does seem fair.

this idea is retarded just because someone has been here for a long time does not make them any better than someone who is new. I mean you want more bronco fans to come here right? Would any of you want to join a community where senority is prized over intelgence? I thought I was done with this type of grade school crap.
On another note I propose the reverse of this idea. we should give posters like boob and crazyhorse and all other trools the most demeaning avys as possible. call it the reverse reward or as we used to call it in college when a guy would bring home a heffer "the green pillow award".

Have a solution Taco that would involve everyone getting an avatar. Those that don't post much get a small avatar and those that contribute and/or premium members get the standard avatar before they were axed.

I'd say no to the idea of #### of posts = avy, unless we want to have 30,000 new threads/posts started just for people to get their post count up. And if you do it by length of time, then you'd have to keep rolling it forward (i.e. if the first cutoff date is Jan 2001 then next year you would need to bump it to Feb 2001, or go by year/season) seems like too much work just for avatars. The only "fair" way would be to have them for people who have donated. But even then I agree with Zach upthread about reducing the clicks is better than fostering them.
Here's another vote for just leaving them off though.

New members are the lifeblood of any board...I think everything that a community can do to welcome them is a good thing...instead of reminding them that they aren't regulars at every turn.
The harder you come down on noobs the more posters you turn away that are normal folks that could be great contributors here.

Unless the theme stayed the same, as with Kaylore and Atlas and others, the avators drove me nuts! My brain got used to the picture being the person I was reading, and then voilā, 'the person I was reading looked different.' Mock had one I got really used to. When he changed it, I kept having to remind myself that I was still reading the same guy.
In my ideal OrangeMane world, where bandwidth is not a concern, avators would at least keep the same theme, if not just stay the same. However, at the bottom of posts, frequently changing pictures could be added.
There were some really good avators, though. TheDave had a great one, along with many others. I just don't miss the frequent "new looks." But maybe that's just me...

Yeah I'm on board for that this time around, TJ can use the money to improve the board. Right now it's just boring and not able to ID many posters because of the fact Avatars are off. However I am not in favor of just giving those that are not premium members NO AVATARS, I think they should get something like a small avatar of like 90x90 size. Better than nothing. I've been rallying against the premium stuff for quite a while but it's clear this board needs some improvement. I'm not worried about the cliques and the BS anymore, there is already some of that on here.
