Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey figures to see plenty of Lee Evans on Sunday.

Evans is one of the league's fastest players, maintaining 4.39-second speed in the 40-yard dash coming out of Wisconsin despite two reconstructive surgeries on his left anterior cruciate ligament before his senior season with the Badgers.

Bailey said many cornerbacks fall victim to Evans in the passing game because they don't "respect that speed."

Evans suffered the injury on a routine pass play during the Badgers' spring game in April 2002 and missed that season.

When asked if there were any receivers he has lined up against he believed were faster than him, Bailey said, "Nobody, not on that field. But I've seen people run faster than I thought, where they've come off the line and I've said, 'Whoa, he's faster than I saw on the film.' But everybody is fast in this league or you're not in this league, so you just start with that."

Ready to play

Defensive end Simeon Rice, who signed Monday, practiced Friday for the third consecutive day to close his first week with the team.

Coach Mike Shanahan said he expected Rice to play "about 15 plays or so" against the Bills.

He said it

"Who did? I'm sure we could have played no preseason games and gone out there and done a good job."

Champ Bailey, cornerback, on if the starters would be sharp in the opener even though they didn't play much during the preseason.

Corners are usually faster than receivers in a full speed sprint, they have to be. I remember seeing a foot race between Deangelo Hall and Steve Smith. Hall was one and a half steps faster. Corners have to be faster just because they are reacting to cuts.

Yep Corners have to start off facing the WR, run backwards, react and close. That all while not daring to breath on the WR for fear of getting called for PI. CB has to be one of the hardest positions to play.

Ummm..that's close to truth.

The corners usually play 5-12 yards off the LOS, unless playing bump.
The corners usually are partially turned toward the QB.
The WR's are generally not running a straight line so they must sell their fakes hard enough to get the corner to bite on the change in direction. Champ as much as admitted that some guys are faster but "not on that field".
Let's face the facts, you've got to have a pass rush because the WR has lots of advantages over the corner. And CB speed isn't enough, even Champ speed.

Definitely a hard position to play w/i the current rules.

In all fairness, Hall is one of if not the fastest CB in the league. I would'nt
count on many corners being faster than Steve Smith. The season before last, when Smith wasn't injured, he dominated almost every CB even with safety help.

What's with these players that can't keep from tooting their own horns? "I'm this or I'm that", geeezus just play and show everyone you are all that.

I think Champ Bailey is the type of player that can say whatever he wants, he's saved our bacon more than a few times. It's good to be confident.

when your cornerback is singlehandedly winning you games, you let him say whatever he wants.

I just don't like the "look at me" mentality of a lot players in the league these days. I wish more of them would answer questions like this by saying something along of the lines as what "we" need to do or why "we" have to be ready to play, etc...

I don't mind a player talking if they've performed on a regular basis but they have to realize that, eventually, they're going to get burned and over time they're gonna lose a step or two. Nothing worse than a player talking himself up throughout the week only to get smoked on Sunday.

Man thats just champ being champ. but if you were the co-leader in ints for the league on a team where the ball went your way approx. 30-40 times all year you would talk a little trash as well.

Honestly Champ usually lets his plays speak for itself and he knows what he is capable of. The question the reporter asked him was not a team question, more of a match up question and he doesn't see anyone faster than him on the other side of the ball. Tell you the truth, I don't either.

I'd say he is challenging people to step up and throw in his direction more than just the few times he ever sees a ball come his way.
