DENVER -- Denver Broncos defensive back Karl Paymah sustained a concussion in the second quarter Thursday night when he dipped his head and took a knee to the helmet from Arizona Cardinals running back Steve Baylark.
Paymah lay on the field for five minutes before being strapped to a backboard and carted off the field to an ambulance. The Broncos said he was taken to a hospital as a precaution.
The Broncos lost linebacker Warrick Holdman for the season when he injured his spinal cord on a similar play early in training camp.
Broncos tight end Stephen Alexander also was injured in the first half Thursday night. He was taken out of the game after injuring his lower left leg when he took out two defenders to spring wide receiver Domenik Hixon on a 43-yard reverse.
I hope hes ok

Yes, it was a scary looking play but sounds like he'll be ok. I will pray for him tonight. ALexander had a bruised leg, no biggie.

Was it a crushing hit on Paymah?

Was it a crushing hit on Paymah?
Paymah went low on a running back and took a knee to the head. Cat scans and other tests came back negative so he should be fine.

The scary thing was after he got hit, he rolled over onto his back with his arms out & locked up and if you looked close enough it seemed like he his feet were shaking. It was definately a big scare.

Paymah's CT scan negative
Associated Press, DENVER (AP) -
These scenes are becoming all too familiar for the Denver Broncos.
Defensive back Karl Paymah sustained a concussion in the second quarter Thursday night when he dipped his head and took a knee to the helmet from Arizona Cardinals running back Steve Baylark.
Paymah lay on the field for five minutes and the Broncos all knelt as he was tended to by medical personnel, who strapped him to a backboard and carted him off the field to an ambulance.
Paymah had feeling in his extremities and had passed a battery of tests but was hospitalized overnight, coach Mike Shanahan said.
The scene was eerily familiar to one last December when former Broncos linebacker Al Wilson injured his neck in a collision with teammate Gerard Warren.
Earlier this month, the Broncos lost linebacker Warrick Holdman for the season when he injured his spinal cord on a running play in training camp.
Paymah's CT scan and X-rays were negative and the team was waiting word on results of an MRI, Shanahan said.
"They feel really good about where he's at," Shanahan said. "He's still going to stay overnight tonight for preventative purposes."
Hamza Abdullah, who also played with Paymah in Washington State's secondary, frantically signaled the trainers to come onto the field just as the play was whistled dead.
"It sounded like a car crash and I was just trying to get the trainers over there as soon as possible because it was scary," Abdullah said.
"I completely forgot about football for about five minutes. When you see your best friend laying there on the ground, can't move, non-responsive, I mean, it's painful to watch, very painful."
Broncos tight end Stephen Alexander also was hurt in the first half. He was taken out of the game after bruising his lower left leg when he dived to take out two defenders and spring wide receiver Domenik Hixon on a 43-yard reverse.
"He's quite sore right now," Shanahan said. "I don't think it's anything very serious. The X-rays were negative, so that's very positive."

I'm glad to hear he's going to be okay. That really scared the crap out of me.

That was very scary. I actually thought the runningback was hurt initially.
I'm glad Karl is okay or seems to be at this point.

Let's see...Positive xray=negative...Plus means positive...Negative means minus and two negatives equal a positive... Shanny's in midseason coachspeak form.

Agreed. When his arms were locked into the air when he got hit, I was thinking the worst.
Glad he isn't as banged up as it first appeared. Hopefully he'll be running around in no time.

I'd forgotten that Warren was the one who wrecked Al. Well, good riddance.

That was just gross looking, the guy crumpled up rolled over and his muscles were straining/max flexed on his back with his head up in the air. His left leg was going through some nerve shock, shaking. I've seen some back neck injuries but that one just looked gross.
Glad to hear it will be okay!

He was having a good game too. We'll have some quality depth in the secondary if everyone is healthy.

Thanks for posting that. I'm glad to hear that my adoptee is okay-- hopefully he'll be healthy enough to get back on the field soon.
