Shanahan might keep backup QB safe, healthy
BY FRANK SCHWAB, THE GAZETTE

ENGLEWOOD -- If Denver Broncos backup quarterback Patrick Ramsey doesn’t play tonight, it will reflect how quickly he learned coach Mike Shanahan’s offensive system.

Every year the Broncos hold starters and some key backups out of the final preseason game. Denver finishes the preseason tonight at Invesco Field at Mile High against Arizona. Although Ramsey is in his first season with the Broncos, Shanahan said he might sit and stay healthy for the season.

“Do you give your second-team quarterback more (repetitions), or do you feel good enough about him that you want him to sit?” Shanahan said. “If he did get a sprained ankle or something like that, do hurt yourself going into the (season)? Those are the things you ask each other, that we talk about before the last game of the preseason.”

The last time the Broncos held their backup quarterback out of the preseason finale was 2003, when Steve Beuerlein didn’t play. Danny Kanell played in 2004, Bradlee Van Pelt played in 2005 and Jay Cutler played last year.
Shanahan has said he is impressed at how well Ramsey, who has played five NFL seasons, has picked up the offense. Ramsey has completed 23 of 42 passes for 313 yards in three games. He has three touchdowns and an interception.

If that’s good enough for Shanahan, Darrell Hackney will probably play most of the game.

Hackney has been Denver’s third-string quarterback this preseason. Preston Parsons, who spent last year on the practice squad, has been the fourth quarterback.

“It’s an opportunity to show people what I can do and that I can play in the NFL,” Hackney said.

Hackney was undrafted in 2006 and was signed by Cleveland. He was cut before the season and was out of football last year. Denver signed him in January.

Hackney performed well early in training camp, which gave him a chance to play in the preseason. He played in the fourth quarter of Denver’s first two games, and completed 4 of 9 passes for 29 yards and an interception. Even if Ramsey plays tonight, Hackney should get in well before the fourth quarter.

“I feel impressed with what I’ve done,” Hackney said. “A lot of players have told me they’re impressed with what I’ve done. They didn’t know I could do that.”

Hackney will have a tough time winning a roster spot no matter how well he plays tonight. The Broncos’ philosophy the past few years has been to keep two quarterbacks on the active roster. However, Shanahan has said repeatedly that he will keep the best 53 players, even if that includes a third quarterback.

“My mind-set is to make the 53-man roster, no matter what it takes,” Hackney said.

I refuse to maintain "radio silence" until Sunday at noon! That's my first chance to see the NFL Network replay.

Does anybody know if Fox Sports Rocky Mountain will show the game?

Looks like I'll have to break down, swallow my pride, and ask Alec for a torrent :(

I'm not too impressed with Ramsey yet. I need more.

You gotta be impressed with that arm though ... every throw is like a mortar charge.

And remember - he's just the BACKUP quarterback, not the starter. Would you rather have BVP? Andrew Walter? :oyvey: .... I didn't think so. I'm very pleased - I hope he stays 10 years or more (have I mentioned that anywhere?)

Speaking of powerful arms, Cutler plus Ramsey - and this Hackney kid too - that's a whole lotta firepower. The only guy I remember here with an arm as strong as any of the three, since Elway retired anyway, is Gus Frerrotte.

I really love our QBs - all three of them. I hope there's room for Hackney on the PS.

Yep, yep, and yep. BVP? Wow. What a train wreck.

Plummer? I had to close my eyes. I'm still watching Ramsey, and Hackney is looking good. Yes, they're backups. It is nice to have some guns back there.

I've seen enough floppy, noodle throws the last few years.

I'd rather have Hackney in there anyway. I've no idea where this love for Ramsey's coming from. Has anyone actually seen him play yet??? He's a terrible QB.

I agree eddie mac. If Ramsey had looked at all impressive in game three, I could see where he's a lock and might sit but he wasn't. In fact, after a few throws, I decided he should just hand the ball to Young and roll away from the play. What the hell good is a gun without sights??

I'd like to see what Hackney can do because this team will be very bad if they have to rely on Ramsey.

This is lame. You can't tell me Ramsey doesn't need more work in this system. Hell, there are A LOT of players that can use more work that are sitting. With 10 days to opening day they should be out there.

Maybe Shanny wants to sit Ramsey and play Hackney because he feels Hackney may have a shot at the #2?

This is what people don't get. He wasn't brought in to push Jay or be a starter, he was brought in to be the guy we go to in a pinch and while he isn't as good as Jay, who is himself still learning, he allows us to keep our game plan if he needs to come in. Another year in the system and he'll look very nice.

Seriously?

I can't believe the NFL Network is gonna take that long to air the game.

It's typically no more than a 1 day turnaround.....

That's aggravating....

What also agravates me is the fact that they always seem to replay Bronco games last or close to last out of all the preseason game airings...

This is another reason, why I don't understand why the NFL makes season ticket holders pay for these lousy pre-season games. Who wants to pay around $85 dollers to watch Hackney play the whole game, who is gone to be on the practice squad next week. Ridicoulus

i saw on nfl live earlier about maybe the league changing the schedule, taking the fourth preseason game and adding it to the regular season game so there would be 1 games and one of them would be international. But the owners are against this because in preseason the starters get like 1100 bucks and the owners keep the rest, meaning they still charge the full price for parking and tickets, if the gamw for moved into the season they would have to pay more

Its a shame you have to actually spell it out for people on here but whatever. I meant what has he done in the NFL to justify surplanting Ramsey as the #2. Regardless of how crappy Ramsey may or may not have been he still has far more experience than Hackney who has done zilch in the NFL.

Well, i think hackney could hack it as a #2 qb after a year or two of experience. He definitly has talent. His poise and confidence and game awareness are pretty good. It looks to me like he has better natural instincts than Ramsey but they have to be honed.
