View Full Version : Three Plans to Bring Back AVATARS to the OrangeMane

(Mods I know you gotta move this, but give it it a couple hours to get some traction please?)

I'm sure everybody's happy the OrangeMane has expanded so greatly, that we have our own reporters at camp ... and we're all looking forward to a great season. But the expanded size has its drawbacks, too. Because of the extra-large number of daily visitors, the site slowed down, and Taco John was forced to disable avatars a few weeks ago to keep the site moving at a reasonable speed.

For me, the place was a lot less fun, I was actually getting irritated (took it out on bpc - sorry bro). I realized avatars are like "faces" to me. Without them, it's like going to your club, but everybody has a mask over their head. They have nametags on, sure, but you can't see their faces. No fun anymore. Several others have echoed similar sentiments, so I'm presenting here a couple plans to bring back the Avatars:

PLAN 1 - The moderators give us a dollar figure we need to move the site up to a faster server, with more bandwidth to handle the load, and we do a fundraiser.

PLAN 2 - Pezman says it's theoretically possible to host Avatars offsite (PhotoBucket or ImageShack), and that might permit avatars while maintaining site speed.

PLAN 9 (from Outer Space) - Have Plummer drive his Honda Element over to the server building, and when the site slows down, he can back up to the building, flip them off in the mirror and slam into the building in reverse.

All three Plans sound good to me, but I'm partial to Plan 2.

Plan 9 sounds freaking phenomonal. Pluswhich, Jake has plenty of spare time these days, right?

But I'd be down with the other two plans as well.

Right on JCM ... you and Smalltowngrll and Rohirrim are the inspiration for this poll

I'm hoping the Plummer option will catch on for polls in the future. Blaming Griese is getting OOOOOOOld :olddude:

There are a few people that keep the same avatar theme, like BroncoBuff and Kaylore. However, a lot of people are like me and change their avatar whenever they get sick of looking at it. Therefore, I'm not sure it accomplishes putting a "face" to the name. However, it does add some personality to the board.

Man ... I've been gone six hours, and ZERO new votes - ZERO new posts.

This "Announcements" room is really deserted ... you can actually see the tumbleweeds rolling by:

Would that twist be a minimum post requirement to get said Avy?

BroncoBuff

Well, minimum NUMBER of posts is no good, because lots of very good people mostly read. Actually, there are some posters here who just post, post, post, the first thing that comes to their mind - they post it. I don't know who they are, but .... Uhh ::)

Maybe 1-year minimum time, plus 200 minimum posts or something, I dunno...

Forget the avatars...since they don't want them on.....go with the monster sigs at max dimensions instead.

My plan for world domination:

1) Take Europe with a series of quick encircling movements with Feint's thrown in for good measure.
2) Sign non-egression pact with Russia
3) Ally with Japan
4) Infiltrate the Norwegian government causing mass confusion
5) Invade the British Isles and kick limey butt.
6) Occupy India and the call centers of big business
7) Invade Russia after 1st big thaw, Hold Sevastopol
8) Rename Europe Stevesland
9) Require hot chicks to go topless in "Palace of Uber...Steve"
10) Seize the boats from that show "the deadliest catch"
11) Invade Alaska with another series of Blitz....I mean quick encircling movements with heavy Luft...ummm...air support and those deadly catch guys.
12) Screw Canada, they have nothing but old Hippy's that don't want to fight.
13) Feint into Canada and instead invade the tree hugger lands of Washington and Oregon.
14) Trench in around the Oregon front and send a pincher move south on to Cabowabo - send Japs south to Aust and Isles.
15) Land Paratroopers in Col and Wy.
16) Squeeze Cali north into the Oregon front and quell resistance
17) Mass troops along Front Range of Rockies for massive push east
18) Cross the Mississippi with full on eastward push
19) Feint northward and take the southern states
20) Pick off the rest of the north eastern states after prolonged sieges.

Rename America "States of Steve"

Hot Chicks required to go Topless in the "White Steve House".

Reinstate NFL Football, Denver required to go 16 and 0 and win Steve Bowl every year.
Tom Brady to clean toilets of Mile High after games.

Worry about south america and Africa later.

Outlaw Marco Polo playing, must say Marco Steveolo

All above will be performed with a massive Army of 2" tall Plastic army men bought at dollar store. this way I will not need supply lines to feed them and they cannot question my Authority.

LordHelmchen

I have them disabled anyway cause most of them are not really office friendly. So I didn't even notice them being gone. Hosting avatars and sigs offisite would be the best option I guess. No add money needed and easy to implement

I really see no good reason why avatars are banned. It seems to me that mandatory photobucket linking should be no problem (just like sigs).

Perhaps there is a non technical reason...

Sup, dawg ...

Admittedly the site has had very heavy traffic lately, mid-season type traffic. But I had always heard exactly what you said - that off-site image hosting is NOT a resource-hog. I dunno what TJ's thinking ... he keeps dodging these threads. I wish he'd just give us a number, whatever it is - $600, even $1200, whatever it costs to upgrade the server .. and then we could try to raise the money with a fundraiser.

Or better yet let's ask broncosteven ... he had some involvemnt in hooking us up with a server before, so maybe he has some answers. ???

Amen, especially since the posted rules on the signature page are not enforced at all.

Sadly I can't add anything other than speculation, this is TJ's baby. I think it could be more of an ISP issue.

When I did talk to him a year ago he said the DB was small and the site was more of a memory and Bandwidth hog.

I am guessing he may be near the point where he may need to add multiple servers in a round robin DNS config to balance use at peak times to host all the features of the app. I have never hosted a public site like this, not sure if the App he is using would allow the DB to be distributed to other sites.

Based on the user locations displayed in the posts. I would consider placing a Server in a Denver ISP, CA ISP, and an east coast ISP with all 3 pointing to a central/clustered DB somewhere.

That is a big time outlay and A TON of work. He would need a couple guys to run this type of setup. Not sure he wants to go that big or worth the effort to him now that his family is growing.

The Photobucket option could help with this as it means that the pictures are not only STORED at photobucket but they are also DOWNLOADED from there too. At least I think that's how photobucket works.

You have to say, however, that even an 'easy' option like this would take time to sort out - you'd have to restrict avatars so that they can ONLY be posted on Photobucket or similar, otherwise it wouldn't work.

So if TJ's just expanded his family I'm not surprised he gives these kinds of threads a wide berth.....even the 'simple' stuff ends up taking more time and effort than you thought it would.

I prefer imageshack. As I understand it works the same but I believe the bandwidth is higher. Anyway I don't see why that option shouldn't work.

Sigs are just as cool. Check mine out.

Anyway I have a 4 month old and know how it is. Sounds like TJ is also busy on the soap box for some Ron Paul dude.

The problem right now is that I'm the project manager for a massive web site, and am at the end of the development cycle trying to get this thing out the door. I'm working 15 hour days right now trying to get this thing wrapped up. Once this project winds down, I plan on spending time updating the board software and revisiting our bandwidth needs and our ability to deliver everything we want to deliver without slowing the site down. But I'm not in position right now to do anything but sympathize and wish that I had the same kind of energy I had at 27 when I could work 18 hour days and actually enjoy it (I'm beat right now!).

18 hour days. You sissy! Back in my day when I was 27 we worked 34 hour days. Damn kids these days and their 24 hour long days.

Take care of yourself and your family. We can wait as long as needed. Lets just hope we don't lose anybody else from here. Pez just said sionara.

Not sure if it is worth bothering now that everyone around here is on the rag.

With the way people here get so pissy and offended so freaking easily I wouldn't waste time as they will just find something else to bitch about and end up leaving.
