Listening to the game on WQAM, early 2nd quarter...lots of youngsters getting PT on offense..Hankerson, Farquharson, Cooper etc. Baby J seems to be having a good game so far as is Kirby. 10-0, good guys right now.

I hope I will be able to watch the game out here in California.
Early Prediction: Oklahoma 22, Miami 9.
The Miami front four should have its way with Oklahoma's offensive line. You will have to double or triple team Calais Campbell like Marshall did today (he still had a great game, with some QB hurries, TFLs and a leaping one handed INT), and that will open things up for the DTs and DEs, like Eric Moncur who had three sacks today. The Miami run defense should do well this game, but it appears we are suspect in the intermediate passing game. I think OU will have good success there. OU's defense will probably be able to completely shutdown Miami's offense. Our run game is pretty good, we have a really good 1-2 punch with Baby J (power guy) and Graig Cooper (flashy speed guy), but our QB play is quite poor (I hope Kyle gets the start instead of Kirby who appeared to be disappointing from what I listened to on the radio, his stats also sucked) and our WRs are extremely raw, alot of true freshman and sophomores playing there right now.

I don't think there's any chance we can beat OU on the road with our terrible QB play.
However, everything I read about the change from Coker to Shannon has been great. I love the change in attitude Shannon has brought. The recruiting seems to be going incredibly.

I only wish the Miami I attended was playing at Colorado instead of the one Ben Roethlisberger went to.

Ten teams that could awaken in 2007
By Steve Megargee, Rivals.com College Football Staff Writer
It happens just about every year.
Each of the last 10 seasons, at least one team has landed in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll after having a losing season the previous year. Last year's final Top 25 featured four teams that were coming off losing seasons.
No. 18 Wake Forest won the Atlantic Coast Conference title and No. 14 Arkansas reached the Southeastern Conference championship game last year after both teams went 4-7 in 2005. No. 21 Oregon State and No. 25 Tennessee also appeared in the final 2006 rankings one year after going 5-6.
The top sleeper of the last decade was the 2005 Penn State team that bounced back from a 4-7 season the previous year to win the Orange Bowl and finish third in the nation.
But the biggest recent season for sleepers came in 1997. That's when the final Top 25 poll featured eight teams that were coming off losing seasons: No. 5 UCLA, No. 9 Washington State, No. 10 Georgia, No. 15 Purdue, No. 22 Ole Miss, No. 23 Missouri, No. 24 Oklahoma State and No. 25 Georgia Tech.
What's the secret to predicting a sleeper? Often teams respond to a coaching change.
After going 3-8 the previous year, the 1997 Purdue team went 9-3 and finished 15th in the nation in Joe Tiller's first season. Louisiana State went 8-4 in Nick Saban's debut season of 2000 after posting a 3-8 mark in 1999. Maryland's surprising run to the 2001 ACC title came in Ralph Friedgen's first year as the Terrapins' coach. The 2003 Utah team bounced back from a losing season and went 10-2 in Urban Meyer's first year.
We kept that in mind while trying to decide on 10 potential sleeper teams for the 2007 season. Although we didn't limit ourselves to teams that posted losing records last year, we still wanted our potential sleepers to meet a few select criteria:
• No team that appeared in last year's AP postseason poll or in this year's USA Today preseason poll was eligible for this list.
• Any team that was predicted to win a conference or division title in a preseason media poll also wasn't considered. That item knocked out Florida State, the media's preseason pick to win the ACC Atlantic Division.
• We had to think each team on this list would improve its record this season.
It's no mere coincidence that four of the top six teams on our list underwent offseason coaching changes.
Rivals.com Top 10 Sleeper teams
1. Miami
It seems a bit odd to mention a team that has won five national titles since 1983 as a sleeper, but Miami fits the criteria after slumping to a 7-6 record last season. A closer look at that season indicates the Hurricanes aren't too far away from returning to Atlantic Coast Conference title contention. Miami returns 17 starters from a team that lost four games by three or fewer points last year. The return of All-America candidates Calais Campbell and Kenny Phillips will help make the defense as good as ever. We're guessing the promotion of defensive coordinator Randy Shannon to head coach will help add some life to an offense that's been dormant the last few years. Shannon might need a couple of years before Miami is contending for national titles again, but we're guessing the Hurricanes will emerge as Virginia Tech's top challenger in the ACC Coastal Division this year. Although Miami wasn't in the preseason coaches' poll, Rivals.com listed the Hurricanes as the No. 20 team in our own preseason Top 50. That lofty ranking offers enough evidence in our faith that Miami will bounce back this season.
2. Arizona State
Dennis Erickson has won at all of his previous stops (last season's one-year experiment at Idaho excluded), so it's only a matter of time before he has the Sun Devils moving into the upper reaches of the Pac-10. Arizona State has enough talent to challenge California and UCLA for second place in the conference this year. Now that Rudy Carpenter has regained his health after breaking each of his hands last year, the junior quarterback should return to the form he showed two years ago when he led the nation in passing efficiency. Carpenter's struggles last year helped explain why Arizona State struggled through a 7-6 season that resulted in the firing of Dirk Koetter. Arizona State also boasts one of the game's most underrated running backs in Ryan Torain. The Sun Devils should benefit from the fact that they play most of their toughest conference foes (Oregon State, California and Southern California) in Tempe.
3. Iowa
Perhaps no team underachieved quite as much as Iowa last year. After starting the year as a trendy pick to reach a BCS game, the injury-riddled Hawkeyes finished 6-7 with an Alamo Bowl loss to Texas. How are the Hawkeyes going to do better this year without Drew Tate, their starting quarterback for the last three seasons? Take a look at their schedule. Iowa doesn't have to face Michigan or Ohio State this season. The Hawkeyes could challenge for a Big Ten title as long as defensive end Kenny Iwebema - one of eight returning starters on defense - bounces back from the shoulder injury that hampered him for much of the 2006 season. Iowa also could use a comeback season from Albert Young, who rushed for 779 yards last year after gaining 1,334 yards in 2005. A big season from Young could take some of the pressure off first-year starting quarterback Jake Christensen, who should benefit from a promising receiving corps that features Dominique Douglas and Andy Brodell.
4. Alabama
The Crimson Tide has garnered plenty of offseason noise for a sleeper, but most of that attention has revolved around the guy on the sideline instead of the guys on the field. Alabama has more talent than its 6-7 record in 2006 might indicate. John Parker Wilson set a single-season school passing record and DJ Hall broke the school's single-season receiving record last year. Hall and Keith Brown give the Tide one of the nation's top receiving tandems. Alabama lost four games by seven or fewer points last season. The presence of first-year coach Nick Saban could help Alabama turn some of those close losses into victories this season. Alabama isn't quite good enough to contend for a Southeastern Conference Western Division title this soon in Saban's tenure, but the Tide should finish the season with at least eight wins.
5. Oklahoma State
Few teams in the nation can match Oklahoma State's talent level at the offensive skill positions. Bobby Reid and Zac Robinson return at quarterback to throw to All-America candidate Adarius Bowman. Dantrell Savage averaged 6.5 yards per carry last year, and he reached the 100-yard mark in five of his last seven games. The return of all those guys should assure that Oklahoma State is more talented than last year's team, though the Cowboys' schedule could make it difficult for them to improve their win total by more than a game or two. Oklahoma State opens the season at Georgia and faces Nebraska, Texas A&M and Oklahoma on the road.
6. Michigan State
How much difference can a coaching change make? Michigan State could put that theory to the ultimate test this year. The Spartans displayed a penchant for wilting at the first sign of adversity the last two years under John L. Smith, who was fired last fall in the midst of a 4-8 season. New coach Mark Dantonio built Cincinnati into a bowl game winner and ought to give Michigan State much more mental toughness. Michigan State lost quarterback Drew Stanton to the NFL and also must replace its top three receivers and two starting defensive tackles from last year. The Spartans also play the Big Ten's most difficult schedule, which features road games with Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Ohio State and Purdue. Although the Spartans must overcome plenty of hurdles, we believe Dantonio's arrival and running back Javon Ringer's return to health will allow Michigan State to earn a bowl bid.
7. Arizona
Although the Wildcats' 6-6 record last year ended a string of six consecutive losing seasons, they still haven't reached a bowl game since 1998. Defense hasn't been the problem under Mike Stoops, who is entering his fourth year as Arizona's head coach. Arizona allowed 21 points or less in nine of its 12 games last year and features one of the nation's top cornerbacks in Antoine Cason. The Wildcats are hoping the arrival of former Texas Tech co-offensive coordinator Sonny Dykes will help Arizona's offense catch up to its defense. The first-year Arizona offensive coordinator is installing more of a pass-oriented attack, which should help Willie Tuitama bounce back from a disappointing 2006 season. Arizona might have to settle for a middle-of-the-pack finish in the Pac-10, but the Wildcats should do well enough to end their bowl drought.
8. Fresno State
Fresno State reached bowl games every year from 1999-2005 and caught the nation's attention two years ago when it threw a major scare into Southern California before falling 50-42 to the top-ranked Trojans. But the Bulldogs have gone just 4-11 since that USC game and ended their string of bowl bids with a disappointing 4-8 season last year. Fresno State now must pick up the pieces without star running back Dwayne Wright, who turned pro after his junior season. We remain optimistic about the Bulldogs because they still have coach Pat Hill, who built Fresno State into one of the nation's top non-BCS programs. Fresno State's late-season surge - the Bulldogs won three of their final four games last year - suggested they were on the verge of turning things around. The Bulldogs probably won't challenge Boise State or Hawaii for the Western Athletic Conference title, but they should have a winning season and contend for a bowl bid if quarterback Tom Brandstater plays with some consistency.
9. Virginia
Consider the Cavaliers the East Coast's version of Arizona. Both teams have solid defenses that couldn't quite compensate for their ordinary offenses last year. Defensive end Chris Long is a future first-round draft pick who leads a defense that allowed seven points or less in victories over Duke, North Carolina, North Carolina State and Miami last year. Virginia still went 5-7 and missed the postseason because it ranked 100th or worse in every major offensive category. The offense should fare better this year now that sophomore quarterback Jameel Sewell earned some starting experience as a redshirt freshman. The defense has a chance to rank among the nation's best. That combination should add up to a bowl bid for the Cavaliers.
10. Illinois
Since Illinois stunned the recruiting world by signing five-star prospects Arrelious Benn and Martez Wilson, the Illini have become a trendy pick to earn a bowl bid. Those predictions may be a tad optimistic, but Illinois certainly has enough talent to improve upon last year's 2-10 finish. Benn could become an instant star at receiver. His ability as a home-run threat should make him a perfect match for quarterback Juice Williams, who displayed a knack for throwing the deep ball last year even while completing less than 40 percent of his passes. Linebacker J Leman returns to anchor a defense that showed its toughness last year during a 17-10 loss to top-ranked Ohio State. The Illini held the Buckeyes to their lowest point total of the regular season. Illinois isn't ready to challenge the Ohio States of the world for Big Ten supremacy just yet, but the Illini won't finish at the bottom of the league standings for a fifth consecutive year.

SoCal, it's going to be a long, long year. I bought they hype that Shannon could quickly turn around the mess Coker left, but now I think it could take years. Beating FIU by 14 points at home is a joke.
The offense is terrible, the defense is overrated, and special teams is terrible. I don't think we're going bowling.
Maybe Robert Marve will come in and show something for next season. Florida is going to absolutely kill us in Gainesville next year.

Shannon is replenishing our talent base and that is what is most needed. I said in the summer that he has built a staff of recruiters, not a staff of Xs and Os geniuses, which is fine, thats the Ron Zook method, it didnt work fast enough for Zook to save his job, but it did bear fruit for Florida. He is cleaning up in recruiting right now, we already have several Top 100 prospects committed. It's talent level more than anything right now. It will not take very long now that we are locking down the State of Miami (3 huge commits already from No. 1 nationally ranked Miami Northwestern). By 2009, this is a Top 5 team.
And at QB..I agree, Marve is what I am waiting for. I wish he didnt get in that car accident or else he'd prolly be starting already, I read some really good things about him and about how very smart he is and how well he is already acclimated to the system...I also read he could be back in a month.
We'll see.
Here are some good clips of Marve:

I know Shannon will be a great recruiter. Young kids in South Florida are going to want to play for a young black coach rather than a grandpa in Tallahassee or a stud coach in Gainesville who'll be in the NFL soon. Damn, Urban Meyer is a great coach. I only wish our offense looked anything close to the one Meyer has at UF.
I never thought Miami would fall so far. We're worse than USF, UCF and maybe even FAU. FIU is the worst team in I-A and we barely beat them. The probation years weren't even this bad.

I think when we were at the nadir of the probation era, we were worse than this...there is still alot of talent on the defense (albeit alot of it young and inexperienced talent such as Colin McCarthy for example), but yeah it is a rough time. This is not all Coker's fault (a LARGE part of it is though), the administration is also at fault too, we had studs like Ali Highsmith and Vidal Hazelton who wanted to come here, but stupid admissions wouldnt let them in....how can Hazelton get into USC but not Miami? Same thing with Dwayne Bowe (although he took some cash too from LSU, I dunno if he would have signed even if he could get in). And Coker repeatedly failed to close on a number of prospects which we had but ended up being the bridesmaid, this has happened so many times, Brian Cushing, Brian Toal, Fred Davis, the WR we lost to Florida last year etc. I am not even going to blame him for kids that got financially bribed away like Antone Smith, Trevor Ford, Preston Parker, Dwayne Bowe, that CB that was steered by the street agent to Tenneessee etc., but he definitely ****ed up alot of crap on his own as did the administration.

Miami Northwestern beat Southlake Carroll. Hopefully we can get Tommy Streeter along with the rest of the MNW boys that are already coming down to Coral Gables.
Thursday night might be another painful showing on national TV. I don't see too many more victories for Miami this season.
Texas A&M - lose something like 35 to 21. They'll pound the ball all night against our small defensive line. They have a bad defense, but we have an even worse offense
Duke - We'll win in unimpressive fashion. 24-10.
North Carolina - Butch will inspire his new team to beat his old team. UNC will win 21-7.
Georgia Tech - The Yellow Jackets will laugh at their old offensive coordinator and pitch the shutout at the Orange Bowl. Shannon's defense's will continue to struggle against Tech, but now he'll figure out that it wasn't Nix. We lose 24-0.
Florida State - Both teams are garbage, but FSU is slightly less terrible. The Nix offense manages a field goal, but FSU scores a few touchdowns on David Carr jumpballs, winning 17-3.
North Carolina State - Our boys squeak out a 10-6 victory against the mess Chuck Amato left.
Virginia - I can only hope that we send the Orange Bowl out a winner. If we lose this game I'll be devastated. If Shannon can't get these guys to win one for the OB I'll have to seriously question his hiring.
Virginia Tech - Another shutout. The Hokies win 27-0
Boston College - Miami doesn't have a chance in hell winning this game. Matt Ryan will tear apart the defense and the Canes won't score much, but they'll avoid the shutout. BC beats Miami for the first time since Hail Flutie, 41-10.
Shannon goes 5-7 in his first year and better hope all these recruits he has now won't decommit after seeing how far Miami has fallen.
Thank you, Larry Coker, Paul Dee and Donna Shalala.

I agree with most of those predictions, although I think we'll win against UNC, I don't think the VT score will be that bad (they are pretty bad too), but I pretty much agree with the rest of it. If we can just hold onto the recruits we have right now, which are pretty impressive and pick up a few more from SoFla, we'll be well on our way. Shannon is already starting the younger guys anyway like Hankerson, Cooper, DVD, McCarthy (stud), Adkins etc, so they'll be even better next year.
Order will be fully restored by 2009.

Ryan Clement and Scott Covington were worlds better than Kyle Wright or Kirby Freeman. I know for a fact that I could complete more passes than Kirby Freeman against a team like Marshall or FIU.
Also, 1997 had some sick young talent. On defense you had very young guys like Damione Lewis, Nate Webster and Dan Morgan. Ed Reed didn't earn a letter but got a little action. Leonard Meyers was a decent corner and Duane Starks was a first round pick and had a solid NFL career.
On offense we had Edgerrin James, Santana Moss, Reggie Wayne, Bubba Franks and James Jackson, who was a stud early in his Miami career. Our current guys aren't nearly as good as those skill position players. I know we can look back in hindsight at how those young players in 1997 turned out, but I don't see the same talent on the 2007 team.
Javaris is good, but no Edge. I doubt McCarthy will be an all-time great like Morgan. Kenny Phillips, to me, has been a bust the last two years and won't be an elite Miami safety like Reed or Taylor. Our current WR core is a joke. Hankerson may turn out good, but that's only one guy vs. first round picks in Moss and Wayne as well as solid college receivers like Darryl Jones and Andre King. Also, for the first time since Bubba Franks we don't have a future first round Tight End on the roster. I'm not that impressed with Graig Cooper so far, either, and would say James Jackson was better early in his career.
I think Calais Cambell and Demarcus Van Dyke are the only guys on the 2007 team that will be better now or in the future than their 1997 counterparts at DE and CB. Maybe Marve, too. And Cambell hasn't done much this season, either. Maybe it's a blessing in disguise that Cambell and Phillips have been so unimpressive. They might come back for their senior seasons, though I doubt either will. It seems like everyone has left early since the 2001 season when Reed and McKinney came back for their final seasons.
It just shows that Shannon must hit home runs with the 2008 class. I hope these Northwestern guys pan out.

Order will be fully restored by 2009.I'm usually not a pessimist, but I am with Miami. I hope you're right.
All I can say is thank God for Mike Shanahan and the Broncos and the upcoming start to what should be a fun NHL/Avalanche season. Otherwise I'd be one depressed sports fan.

I think the 1997 team could beat 2007 just because of the QB situation.

Yes, the 97 QBs were alot better than the 07 version, especially Clement, I never really liked Covington, I thought Ryan Clement was a stud though, he just was there at a bad point in the program, but I thought he was a warrior. One of my favorite Canes, ever. The 2007 OL was alot better than the 97 OL though. The WRs will get better...Hankerson is just a true freshman, I havent seen much of Farquharson yet, he was getting pimped alot in the summer, but I think he has a ways to go. I think Ryan Hill will be decent in time. I am most disappointed with the veteran WRs...Leggett sucks, I remember seeing a preseason publication (or maybe it was NFLDraftCountdown.com) that said he was the 10th best WR for next year's draft, which made me think the WRs in the draft are going to be a really thin group. :) Jenkins has never done anything of value. Khalil Jones has no hands. I am waiting for Sam Shields..he was great for a freshman last year, where the **** is he? I know he was suspended for Marshall, but WTF. I thought he was going to carry the group this year.
What do you think about T-Good's draft prospects? He fell off the map after 2004, but he is having a good year this year, he is a solid athletic LB....I think he prolly can get drafted in the 3rd round or so this year, we need OLBs (even though this year T-Good is at MLB, I think he is a pro OLB), maybe Denver can get him if he slides to the fourth round.
