Hamilton's situation makes Myers starter
Promotion could carry into season opener at Buffalo
By Mike Klis
Denver Post Staff Writer
Until further notice, Chris Myers is the Broncos' starting left guard. Postconcussion symptoms have yet to clear from Ben Hamilton, which means he is questionable for the season opener Sept. 9 at Buffalo.
Hamilton started all 80 regular-season games the previous five seasons, but has missed the entire preseason after suffering a concussion early in training camp. He was expected to return Monday and play Thursday in the preseason finale against the Arizona Cardinals at Invesco Field at Mile High, but recent cardio-fitness workouts left him feeling nauseous.
The Broncos will have Hamilton evaluated by a neurospecialist Wednesday. His agent, Peter Schaffer, is optimistic Hamilton will be ready by next week.
"The Broncos are taking great precaution in their approach to treating Ben," Schaffer said. "We have full confidence in their medical staff, which has been doing what's best for his personal and the team's well being, and we remain confident he will be ready to go for the opener."
If Hamilton isn't cleared by Monday, Myers will get the first start of his three-year career.
Myers was selected in the sixth round of the 2005 draft out of Miami.
Kircus among cuts
There's always Subway.
Wide receiver David Kircus, a feel-good story last season who wound up on the wrong side of the law this year, will be among the 11 players officially trimmed from the Broncos' roster today.
Unable to find an NFL job in 2005, Kircus worked at a Subway store for a couple months until he made a comeback with the Broncos last season, averaging 20.8 yards on nine catches.
Kircus didn't help his chances of making the team this year, though, when on May 20 he became involved in a scuffle at a late-night party in Centennial. Kircus was charged with felony assault after he was accused of punching a man in the face. He has pleaded not guilty, saying he acted in self defense. He is scheduled to be arraigned Oct. 2 in Arapahoe County District Court.
Also cut before the Broncos' practice Monday were defensive end Kenard Lang, defensive tackle Demetrin Veal, wide receiver David Terrell, tailback Cedric Cobbs, fullback Troy Fleming, tight end Teyo Johnson and kicker Brandon Pace.
The team will announce those cuts, plus three more, today.
Kircus has more recent experience than the five candidates remaining for the No. 4 and No. 5 receiver spots. Domenik Hixon, Brian Clark, Quincy Morgan, Glenn Martinez and Marquay McDaniel combined for zero catches in 2006.
It's the Selvin effect
Modern medicine has nothing on the healing powers of Selvin Young. The undrafted rookie from Texas rushed for 91 yards during the preseason game Saturday against the Cleveland Browns. Not so coincidentally, running backs Travis Henry, Mike Bell and Andre Hall were back at practice Monday after missing last week with injuries.
"After a performance like that, we all understand it's a competition," said Henry, who really has no competition for the starting tailback job. "Selvin put himself in great position to make this football team."
Rookie defensive end Tim Crowder, Young's fellow Texas alum, also returned after missing the previous two preseason games with an ankle injury.
Footnotes
Elvis Dumervil will not play Thursday against Arizona, which means he will maintain his position as a starting defensive end. ... Given the disappointing play of his No. 1 defense, coach Mike Shanahan was asked if he would break form and play his starters in the final preseason game. The answer: No.

This is bad because Meyers has not looked ready. In fact he doesn't look to me to be NFL starting calibar. Guys seems to run right past him and he doesn't get a good push in run game. Please Hamilton get better quick. Lepsis/Nalen/Hamilton we just have to have, we won't be good without any of those three players.

I have a feeling he's going to flip the switch and step up his game with the new responsibilities. Watch him against AZ.

I think he stepped up his game last week compared to week 1. I don't think he will play a lot against Az but you never know.

I thought he looked pretty good especially for a guy that has been taking reps at both guard spots, center and special teams. Talk about not letting a guy settle down!:o :strong:

Sorry he just doesn't seem like he's playing that well. I would love for him to step up and of course I hope he does. There is a reason though why Hamilton would be the coaches choice, It's because he is the better player.

No reason to say sorry cutthemdown.............I also expect him to step up his game......each and every one he plays. He expects it more from himselft then any of us do.

Of that I have no doubt. No one including your son can even get to this point without having a lot of drive and toughness. I hope he lives then dream man!!!!

I hope Myers is ready and has the chemistry thing working with Nalen and that Metro-sexual Lepsis. Key to our running game is all the guys working together and injuries destroy that.
This is Myers chance to stand up and be notice, best of luck to him.

Wow. Bad news for the OL.
Not really. One of the biggest improvements i've seen on the team has been from Myers. From week 1 against SF to Cleveland he has drastically improved his play on the field. He has been consistently making his run blocks, getting to the 2nd level on run plays and his pass blocking has really come along. The most exciting part of Myers game is the fact that he has really good hands and is using them exceptionally well.
Its great to see Myers and Kupers dad on here. You guys must be really proud and who knows, we could see two stallwarts on the OL coming from these two kids. They have really grown this preseason.

Thanks bpc.,,,,Thats how I feel also he has improved each game of the preseason in my view also. He calls me after every game and tells me right away of his bad plays and trust me he is MUCH harder on himself then any coach or fan could ever be. It angers him to miss a block. He learns from each one of them. Against Washington with the Browns he didnt have any problems keeping him out of the backfield. Washington is a 17 year vet who weighs about 375. I was very proud to see Chris handle him so well. He will improve each game. He just needs more reps with the first side. I think Nalen and Chris are working great together.

After the Cleveland game I don't really see any cause for concern... Myers played very well and if you don't think so, you obviously weren't watching him. Granted, their are better DLs than Cleveland (insert snide remarks here, im sure), but it was great to see moving forward with questions about Hamilton.

I am glad these guys are getting their reps in the preseason and learning from them. This system is extremely brutal to execute without experience and it makes Holland's ascent all the more promising. I wonder if Kuper is not challenging Myers to play on the left side as well? Or is Chris only playing RG?
Either way, this is very good for the OL depth and skill level to advance. I always want to see players develop game to game, situation to situation, and play by play. It is evident the young guys are making their marks on the coaches and gaining confidence. Well done boys, keep up the good work!
Great to hear! I think we just have a bunch of very good players in the middle of our OL. We'll be bolstered when Hamilton comes back but i'm kinda pulling for Myers and Kupe now because their dads are on here and also, they just look really talented out there!
I will say, its hard for me to pull for Hamilton to get back in the lineup. He is undersized and even though he has some very good technique, he ends up getting walked back to the QB against bigger linemen.
Lepsis, Holland, Nalen, Kuper, Myers, and Hamilton are all guys I know we can win with.
Pears is starting to roll into form which is a good thing... from the plays I saw against Cleveland, he was doing a lot better than SF and Dallas especially in his pass pro. I don't know if he'll ever be a dominant run blocker though.
I couldn't be lower on Ryan Harris. Time will tell where he stands besides in the trainers room with back issues.
Adam Meadows is over the hill and injury prone. If he could stay healthy, he would be a good addition. Unfortunately, he cannot and probably won't ever be able to.
RT is a position where we need some help. I wonder if they would try Kuper there. He has the snap I would like at the position... I just don't know if he can pass block consistently in space.

I was wondering about the playing time this week. I kind of thought they would keep him in there longer to give him more reps to get him ready to start week one. But you would know better than I. Best of luck and congrats!

Think they're teaching Kuper tackle. Smart move considering the interior depth and talent and lack thereof on the outside.

I agree. Plus, he's a great technique guy and has quick feet. Those kind of guys are the best candidates to be groomed for left tackle.

Interestng...we cut last years starte for the "one trick pony" a lot of folks in here said was to small to ever start, yet suddenly here he is...starting. I'm really rootin' for this dude. I also noticed the team's website now lists Doom at 260 lbs.

As long as he doesn't puke all 12 pounds back onto the field like the Predator did last year in Gillette.

Thanks Crowebomber....
I tend to agree to have Chris get some reps in tonight but it won't make Chris any less ready to start next week. He is almost foaming at the mouth for the Bills game.
Funny note on him starting,,,,,,,,
Eric Pears and Chris got off practice like at 9:30 yesterday and walked out to the cars and looked at each other and said..........Errrr ummm.......ok so what do we do now? They are not used to "starter" time off and just was lost with extra time on their hands. They took their pups to a park and ran around a while, then went to a movie then lunch. When they finished lunch they looked at each other again.......practice was still going for the rest of the team.
I just cracked up because Chris is very regimented in what he does everyday and he got lost with excess time on his hands LOL.

Dumervil is going to hold on to the starting job. He is improving against the run and will notch 12-15 sacks and force half a dozen fumbles.
