It was only a short while ago that we were bombarded with Fader fans predictions that the return of Art Shell would herald in a new era of Fader success. I must admit it was a memorable season. All those grand visions of renewed glory, all the optimism and sureness that once again it would be cool to be a Fader fan. The Fade went 4-1 in the preseason and hopes were riding high because when you're drowning you'll cling to anything that floats........even a piece of ****. So let's see if this seasons turd can (unlike last year) stay afloat past the first game this season. And perhaps, just maybe, Chokeland will experience a meteoric climb back to credibility and double their seasonal win total to go 4-12.

I, for one, hated both the Turner and Shell hires.

I may have shown some tempered optimism over here, but I knew we were cooked when I witnessed the same too long to develop playcalls, in the preseason, from the last time Shell coached.

I really took nothing from last seasons preseason, when our 4th stringers were pulling out games late, our 1st string offense was getting owned.

Our offense looks like last years about as much as Bob looks like a body builder.

Why would any Raider fan be geeked about Kiffin again? Coaching and gameplanning wins about 2-3 games per year and Kiffin will be at a disadvantage in nearly every game.

Last year, when Raider fans were all pumped after a 4-1 preseason record, I predicted that the Raiders would win more preseason games than regular season games. I was right. They only won two regular season games.

Raiders fans will quit posting by week 4 once they are 0-4.

USC fans were happy to see him go. They blame Kiffin's playcalling for costing them a trip to the national title game last year.

I beg to differ, coaching and gameplanning cost us 6 games last year.

Why would Kiffin be at a disadvantage "nearly every game" ?

Hell, we now have the 2nd best coaching staff in this division by default.

Last year we dusted off Sid Gilman's play book with 7 step drops, no timing between the reciever's route and the depth of the QB drop, and almost all of these plays were called in so late that the defense was firing off going by the playclock.

Couple that with Art Shell's bell bottom and Nehru Jacket blocking schemes in the run game and it was a recipe for disaster.

This year you see the stretch and cut run game, guys hustling downfield to block screens and runs, weakside floods, smoke routes, isolating guys on LB's, half rolls, complimentary plays, all that good stuff that came along post leather helmet era.

Comparing Kiffin to Shell really doesn't make your point valid. My dog 'Spanky' would compare favorably to Shell. The guy has never had to develop, install, or implement a game plan on any level--this puts him at a disadvantage in my book.

Hey, maybe Kiffin's the new Gru-boy but I don't think working under Coach Carroll is as valuable as working under Coach Holmgren.

I expect the Raiders to be improved and if Cullpepper holds up maybe much improved.

I see 5 to 8 wins.

I'm not saying we're without flaws, just that you won't be able to start running out the clock in the 2nd quarter because there's no chance that our offense can overcome a 7 point deficit.

Based on what we've seen in preseason, the Raiders should do better than the Broncos. Oh yeah it's preseason and the Raiders still have Al! Can Lane, despite Al lift the Raiders out of the basement? Naw, but the Chiefs will help.

Shouldnt be a problem according to Pat Kirwan.

Sure, it's early and the real games have not started yet, but I believe Kiffin can walk into Davis' office, sit down and disagree on a player and the owner will defer to the coach when he is presented with logic in a straightforward way. While Davis and I stood alone discussing everything from his days growing up in Brooklyn, New York, to a contract I did 10 years ago for a player with the Jets to a rookie free agent trying to make this team, he mentioned a player or two he would like to see make the team but didn't think his head coach liked -- and probably wouldn't make the final cut.

Kiffins has said there will be "no scholarships" I think you'll see Davis favorites like Alvis Whitthed jettisoned.

Pretty much all of Southern California feel that this is true.
