I was coming up on the big drop off in Utah, grossing 86 k pounds ( highway 191 N.Vernal ) got into 5 th gear , started down , jakes blaring , then my truck jumps put of gear ......with in 10 feet or so , I am doing 40 mph ,I finally get her into 7 th gear ... for those that dont know this road , they have 10 switchback curves 20 mph .... ( alot of truck wrecks on the big drop off ) My brakes are smoking , taching out at 2700 rpm ,come up to the first switchback , 30 MPH curve ,I took it at 40 MPH , I took the first 3 curves at 40 mph , then I knew I was going to be ok , the grade goes from 12% down to 5 % , got to the 5% and was able to get her under control .........

I had a bitch of a time getting down that hill in our minivan. The whole time, I was looking in the RV mirror to make sure some truck didn't eat me for lunch.

08.AUG.07
A rollover on U.S. Highway 191 north of Vernal killed a Texas man on Sunday afternoon.
The incident happened just before 3:30 p.m. near milepost 368. Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Adam Ray reported a 46-year-old Texas man, Alfred Charles Hamm, was driving a 1997 conventional Freightliner pulling a flatbed trailer loaded with two and seven-eighths inch steel pipe.
The driver reportedly lost his brakes while he was traveling south down a steep slope and around a sharp turn. The semi struck a Jersey barrier on the right side. The barrier did not stop the semi from running off of the roadway and Ray reported Hamm lost control of his semi as it left the highway.
UHP reports indicated the semi traveled over the Jersey barrier landing on its right side. The semi then rolled over onto its top, where it came to a complete stop. Hamm receive fatal injuries before rescue workers could extricate him from the semi cab. There were no passengers in the Semi.
Highway 191 was closed until approximately 6 p.m. while crews worked to clear the scene. - Guest

^ LOL I loved that show(BJ&the Bear) as a kid. It made me think I might want to be a trucker, but I'm not mechanically inclined so I'd have ended up being broken down all over the country ;D
I don't remember that last one Spide but the singer sounds like Randy Travis to me. I like him.
Man Spidey, have you ever owned a Big Rig you haven't beat the Sh** out of?! ;D :wiggle:

Good to hear you made it.
I got into a scary accident last month in Colorado. I hit a power pole head on.
I had borrowed a truck and trailer and was moving some things for a relative and my brakes went out on a dirt road at night between Craig and Steamboat on this dirt road that ended abruptly in a tee.
Air bags are a wonderful thing. So are Rhino steel bumpers.
Man, does this sort of thing happen often driving thru the Rockies?

some hard as country through there 2 years ago I was moving an oil rig just outside of Hayden co .. those dirt roads are very unforgiving
Is it mainly with trucks or do a lot of cars brakes give out as well?

most people out here know how to drive in the mountains , follow a native , then follow someone from the south down a hill, you will see the difference .........I see truckers doing the same , alot of companies wont let their trucks on I 70 west of Denver , you wont see Wal Mart , Swift , Werner , or other big companies trucks down 191 North of vernal .........

No ( knock on wood ) but I make damn sure my ride is fit before I go down a hill ... in the case above when my truck jumped out of gear , if My truck hadnt been in tip top shape , the outcome would have been alot different
