(CNN) -- A Republican senator pleaded guilty earlier this month to a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge stemming from his arrest at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, according to state criminal records.

Republican Sen. Larry Craig of Idaho was arrested in June at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

Roll Call newspaper reported Monday that Sen. Larry Craig of Idaho was apprehended June 11 by a plainclothes police officer investigating complaints of lewd behavior in an airport men's room.

Roll Call reports on the U.S. legislature.

Craig denied any inappropriate conduct in a prepared statement, and said he now regrets his guilty plea.

"At the time of this incident, I complained to the police that they were misconstruing my actions. I was not involved in any inappropriate conduct," he said. "I should have had the advice of counsel in resolving this matter. In hindsight, I should not have pled guilty. I was trying to handle this matter myself quickly and expeditiously."

Congress is currently in recess, and Craig's office said he was on vacation in Idaho with his family, with no public appearances scheduled.

Craig, 62, paid a $500 fine when he entered his guilty plea on August 8 in Hennepin County Municipal Court in Bloomington, Minnesota, according to state criminal records.

CNN confirmed that Craig was sentenced to 10 days in jail but that sentence was stayed.

Minnesota law defines disorderly conduct as brawling, disturbing a meeting or engaging in "offensive, obscene, abusive, boisterous or noisy conduct."

According to Roll Call, the arresting officer alleged that Craig lingered outside a rest room stall where the officer was sitting, then entered the stall next door and blocked the door with his luggage.

According to the arrest report cited by Roll Call, Craig tapped his right foot, which the officer said he recognized "as a signal used by persons wishing to engage in lewd conduct."

The report alleges Craig then touched the officer's foot with his foot and the senator "proceeded to swipe his hand under the stall divider several times," according to Roll Call.

At that point, the officer said he put his police identification down by the floor so Craig could see it and informed the senator that he was under arrest, before any sexual contact took place.

Idaho's senior senator is married with three grown children and nine grandchildren. A former rancher, Craig was first elected to the Senate in 1990, after serving a decade in the House. His seat is up for re-election in 2008.

Last fall, Craig's office publicly denied assertions by Internet blogger Mike Rogers that the senator is gay. Craig's office dismissed speculation about the senator's sexuality as "completely ridiculous."

In 1982, Craig denied rumors that he was under investigation as part of a federal probe into allegations that lawmakers on Capitol Hill had sexual relationships with congressional pages, saying the "false allegations" made him "mad as hell."

He was never implicated in that investigation, which eventually led to ethics charges against two other congressmen.

In recent years, Craig's voting record has earned him top ratings from social conservative groups such as the American Family Association, Concerned Women for America and the Family Research Council.

He has supported a federal constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, telling his colleagues that it was "important for us to stand up now and protect traditional marriage, which is under attack by a few unelected judges and litigious activists."

In 1996, Craig also voted in favor of the Defense of Marriage Act, which denies federal recognition to same-sex marriages and prevents states from being forced to recognize the marriages of gay and lesbian couples legally performed in other states.

Craig has also opposed expanding the federal hate crimes law to cover offenses motivated by anti-gay bias and, in 1996, voted against a bill that would have outlawed employment discrimination based on sexual orientation, which failed by a single vote in the Senate.

Craig has endorsed former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in the 2008 presidential race. The senator was named in February, along with Sen. Robert Bennett of Utah, as Romney's liaison to build support among GOP senators.

Monday night, Romney's presidential campaign announced Craig was stepping down.

"He didn't want to be a distraction, and we accept his decision," the Romney campaign said in a statement. Access to a YouTube video in which Craig praised Romney was also blocked. E-mail to a friend

The funniest line I've heard on this came from Dana Milbank of the Washington Post. They were on the Chris Matthews show discussing how the Senator was sliding his foot up agains the undercover cop's foot, and then he argued that he likes to "...spread out his feet..." when he's on the toilet. Milbank's line was, "I guess he's going to raise the Restless Leg Syndrome defense." Hilarious!

Craig is giving his statement now. He's not copping to anything. The local paper is out to get him. It's all the Idaho Statesmans fault! It's a witchhunt!!! Craig: "I'm not gay!" "I love my wife!" Like Scarborough just said, he pulled a page from the Spiro Agnew notebook; It's the media's fault. Same thing Bush pulled on the Gonzales thing. Once again, the party of responsibility blames somebody else and runs for cover. I guess Craig never heard that old saying in politics, "Never pick a fight with a guy who owns a printing press." He's picked a fight with the Statesman now. He's toast. Ha!

GOP Leaders Ask Ethics Probe of Craig
Tuesday August 28, 2007 9:31 PM

By MATTHEW DALY
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - Senate Republican leaders called for an ethics committee review Tuesday into Idaho Sen. Larry Craig's guilty plea in a police sting operation this summer in an airport men's room.

Republican leaders also are ``examining other aspects of the case to see if additional action is required,'' Sen. Mitch McConnell and other top GOP lawmakers said in a written statement.

They released the statement shortly before Craig's scheduled appearance before television cameras in Boise, his first public comments since confirming his guilty plea to a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

WASHINGTON (AP) - A private watchdog group filed an ethics complaint against Sen. Larry Craig Tuesday following the Idaho Republican's guilty plea to misdemeanor charges stemming from complaints of lewd conduct in a men's room.

Craig arranged an afternoon appearance in Boise to address the issue. Aides said he would not answer questions.

The conservative three-term senator, who has represented Idaho in Congress for more than a quarter-century, is up for re-election next year. He hasn't said if he will run for a fourth term in 2008 and is expected to announce his plans this fall.

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington filed a complaint with the Senate ethics committee seeking an investigation into whether Craig violated Senate rules by engaging in disorderly conduct.

Craig, who has voted against gay marriage, finds his political future in doubt in the wake of the charges, which have drawn national attention.

A spokesman, Sidney Smith, was uncertain late Monday if Craig's guilty plea in connection with an incident at the Minneapolis airport would affect his re-election plans.

``It's too early to talk about anything about that,'' Smith said.

A political science professor in Idaho said Craig's political future was in jeopardy. And a spokesman for the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee, Hannah August, said Craig's guilty plea ``has given Americans another reason not to vote Republican'' next year.

Craig said in a statement issued by his office Monday that he was not involved in any inappropriate conduct.

``At the time of this incident, I complained to the police that they were misconstruing my actions,'' he said. ``I should have had the advice of counsel in resolving this matter. In hindsight, I should not have pled guilty. I was trying to handle this matter myself quickly and expeditiously.''

The married Craig, 62, has faced rumors about his sexuality since the 1980s, but allegations that he has engaged in gay sex have never been substantiated. Craig has denied the assertions, which he calls ridiculous.

The arrest changes that dynamic, said Jasper LiCalzi, a political science professor at Albertson College of Idaho in Caldwell, Idaho. He cited the House page scandal that drove Florida Rep. Mark Foley from office.

``There's a chance that he'll resign over this,'' LiCalzi said. ``With the pressure on the Republican Party, he could be pressured to resign. If they think this is going to be something that's the same as Mark Foley - the sort of 'drip, drip, drip, there's more information that's going to come out' - they may try to push him out.''

Already Craig has stepped down from a prominent role with Mitt Romney's presidential campaign. He had been one of Romney's top Senate supporters, serving as a Senate liaison for the campaign since February.

``He did not want to be a distraction and we accept his decision,'' said Matt Rhoades, a Romney campaign spokesman.

According to a Hennepin County, Minn., court docket, Craig pleaded guilty to a disorderly conduct charge on Aug. 8, with the court dismissing a charge of gross misdemeanor interference to privacy.

The court docket said Craig paid $575 in fines and fees and was put on unsupervised probation for a year. A sentence of 10 days in the county workhouse was stayed.

According to the prosecutor's complaint, obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press, airport police Sgt. Dave Karsnia, who was investigating allegations of sexual conduct in airport restrooms, went into a stall shortly after noon on June 11 and closed the door.

Minutes later, the officer saw Craig gazing into his stall through the crack between the stall door and the frame, fidgeted with his fingers and returned to gazing through the stall for about another two minutes.

After a man in the adjacent stall left, Craig entered it and put his roller bag against the front of the stall door, ``which Sgt. Karsnia's experience has indicated is used to attempt to conceal sexual conduct by blocking the view from the front of the stall,'' said the complaint, which was dated June 25.

The complaint said Craig then tapped his right foot several times and moved it closer to Karsnia's stall and then moved it into the area of the officer's stall to where it touched Karsnia's foot. Karsnia recognized that ``as a signal often used by persons communicating a desire to engage in sexual conduct,'' the complaint said.

Craig then passed his left hand under the stall divider into Karsnia's stall with his palms up and guided it along the divider toward the front of the stall three times, the complaint said.

The officer then showed his police identification under the divider and pointed toward the exit ``at which time the defendant exclaimed `No!''' the complaint said.

The Aug. 8 police report says that Craig had handed the arresting officer a business card that identified him as a member of the Senate.

``What do you think about that?'' Craig is alleged to have said, according to the report.

Roll Call, a Capitol Hill newspaper first reported the arrest and guilty plea.
Craig joins other GOP senators facing ethical and legal troubles.

Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, is under scrutiny for his relationship with a contractor who helped oversee a renovation project that more than doubled the size of the senator's home.

Sen. David Vitter, R-La., acknowledged that his phone number appeared in records of a Washington-area business that prosecutors have said was a front for prostitution.

Craig, a rancher and a member of the National Rifle Association, lives in Eagle, Idaho, near the capital of Boise. He was a member of the House for 10 years before winning election to the Senate in 1990. He was re-elected in 1996 and 2002.

Last fall, Craig called allegations from a gay-rights activist that he's had homosexual relationships ``completely ridiculous.''

Mike Rogers, who bills himself as a gay activist blogger, published the allegations on his Web site, www.blogactive.com, in October 2006.
The Idaho Statesman, citing an anonymous source, reported Monday night that a man with close ties to Republican officials said he had a sexual encounter with Craig in the men's room of Washington's Union Station, a few blocks from the Capitol. Craig denied the incident in a May interview with the newspaper, and no arrests were made.

I guess we can now understand why Craig has always been an outspoken critic of gays and fought to kill any efforts to give them any chance at enjoying equal civil rights. After all, if gays could live openly in society, Craig wouldn't be able to hook up with them in men's room stalls. Ha!

Protesters show up in force near Cheney home

WILSON -- Some 200 people gathered in a Wilson field Saturday afternoon for a "Peace Rally" to protest the Iraq war and send a message to Vice President Dick Cheney, who owns a home just up the road.

"We organized it because of the war in Iraq and what an injustice it has been," Walt Farmer, retired Air Force captain and registered Republican said. "The Vice President has received a pass in Jackson long enough. We want to let them know we don't approve of the war or how they play fast and loose with the Constitution."

Attending a rally first with speakers, including State Rep. Pete Jorgensen (D-Jackson), author Alexandra Fuller and musicians, the group then took to the county bike path where they marched 1.5 miles north to the entrance of the exclusive Teton Pines Country Club, where Cheney lives when he is in Wyoming.

A 10-foot tall effigy of Cheney, with a fishing pole in one hand and a spouting oil well in the other, was brought on the route. Rally-goers toppled the statute as a symbolic gesture of their disapproval of the vice president.

Jennifer Love of Jackson said she came to the rally because she's tired of the war.

"I feel like the administration has just turned their head and continued to take vacations," she said. Cheney typically spends the month-long August recess in Jackson Hole. Love and others said they were displeased that Cheney would disrupt other people's time in the outdoors with his helicopters flying overhead.

In the last week, several teams of helicopters have been seen flying in formation over areas of Jackson Hole.

Jeff Brummer and Kate Walker were visiting their son in Wilson and decided to come to the rally.

"We have a long history of anti-war activism so it seemed like the right thing to do," Brummer, of Boston, said. "We're here in particular because I think Dick Cheney is a criminal in virtually everything he's touched or had involvement in, whether it's the war or economy or civil liberties."

Cindy Knight has a son in the military, who has served in Afghanistan. She came to the rally to make sure the voices of parents of military people are heard.

"I don't want him to lose his life in the Iraq war," she said.

Rally-goers held signs that said "Bush-Cheney, War Profiteers," "Feel safe yet? Violence breeds violence," and "At least the war on the middle class is going well."

The rally was organized by Farmer, Karen Hogan, a mother, and Jim Stanford, a writer and activist. At least one Jackson business closed early to allow its employees to attend the rally.

Hypocrisy On Larry Craig Continues

Republicans are trying right now to get away with dismissing this as another "overblown [no pun intended, for sure] media scandal". While running away from Craig at warp speed.

Um, ok guys. You see an "overblown media scandal" was when you tried to impeach Bill Clinton over his personal behavior, and Larry Craig, Mark Foley, Newt Gingrich, David Vitter, Bob Livingston and the rest of your band of self-hating misfits supported it.

Your lead candidate in the presidential race is Rudy Giuliani, who treats marriage like a drive-thru at McDonalds. Then there is dream candidate Fred Thompson, whose girlfriend and FORMER wife was probably not dreaming of having him impregnate her in high school.

This is NOT a media scandal. It is your whole damn party. It is why I do Republican Sexcapades every Thursday (8AM EST) on The Young Turks. And I have to eliminate topics each week.

You guys love the Bible. Try practicing the Golden Rule and then maybe, maybe, I'll have some sympathy.

Oh, and finally, do you think Hugh Hewitt's inviting David Dreier on his show to talk about it and MSNBC's having Armstrong Williams on for a discussion of this topic really makes sense? For those who don't understand, just google their names and get creative about what else you throw in. Then you'll get it.

this whole thing is pretty wierd. I'm looking forward to seeing where the media takes it, should be interesting new approach...dman

Of course it'll be the "evil media" who hangs him out to dry. It wasn't the fact that he was attempting to solicit sex from an undercover cop that put him in this precarious position. Nor the fact that he plead guilty.

Nah, that couldn't be it, it has to be the media.:giggle:

Are you really this clueless, or are you just making excuses for a party which has exposed itself as the most hypocritical bunch of liars on the planet?

In the immortal words of H. Ross Perot, "That's just sad!'" Where the media takes it? Yep. That's where the fault lies. With the media. Pathetic.

Hey, even that bastion of liberal media, Fox News, ran the Craig story as
their lead story. Now of course Hannity tried to keep bringing up Clinton.
But if even Fox is running stories about Craig, you would have to think
it isn't just the Libs trying smear a Republican.
Face it, Craig is a naughty boy, a nasty naughty boy.

I bet Faux News did have the party affiliation posted/ mentioned! Did they?
They usually omit that when reporting on the party of corruption!

Once again, the party of responsibility blames somebody else and runs for cover.

Which party is the "party of responsibility"? Certainly not the GOP, and not the Democrats...

Remember "vast right-wing conspiracy"?

This guys main worry is that people think he's gay. Yeah, you not being gay should really change people's opinion of you now. Geez. Gays are not generally perverts but they have their perverts just as well as heterosexuals do. So which kind of pervert are you Craig?

I seem to remember the RNC positioning themselves as the party of responsibility and family values; The ones who would clean up Washington, once Clinton was gone. I guess once they got those pages cleaned up they decided to move on to the bathrooms. Hilarious!

I think this guy can hold onto his Job , people in ****aho err Idaho are not very bright ....... they just may buy the Gay Lesbian union and the liberal media is out to destroy him

Okay. Yes, Idaho is the reddest of the red states. However, that doesn't, necessarily, mean that EVERYONE living in Idaho IS a Republican. It doesn't mean that EVERYONE living inside the state line supports Bush, his administration, or his policies. It also doesn't mean that EVERYONE living in Idaho is anti-gay rights. It doesn't mean that EVERYONE living in Idaho is pro-gun. It doesn't mean that EVERYONE living in Idaho is a Bible-thumping Christian. And it certainly doesn't mean that EVERYONE living inside the state of Idaho is "not very bright."

I'd give you my opinion on the topic of the original post, but it clearly wouldn't matter. Incidentally, I happen to be apolitical, living in the most Democratic county (voter percentage-wise) in the state of Idaho, and I happen to have a Bachelor's degree in Mass Media Communications from an accredited university. So, shove the generalizations up your tailpipe and smoke it.

The generalization might be quite apropos for Idaho residents like... Butch Otter or Mike Crapo... :P

Anyway, a recent poll shows that most Idahoans think Craig should resign...

I hope he doesn't resign, and that he runs again. That is about the only way the Dems will capture that state.

Excerpt from USA Today:

http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2007-08-30-craig-tape_N.htm

On the tape, Craig and the arresting officer can be heard arguing over what happened in the men's room minutes earlier. Craig acknowledges that the men's feet bumped but says nothing improper happened.

"Did we bump? Yes, I think we did. You said so. I don't disagree with that," Craig said.

But Craig disputes the officer's account that he swept his hand under the stall next to him in an apparent effort to advance the encounter. They even disagree whether Craig used his right hand or his left hand.

Craig said he was merely trying to pick up a piece of paper — an account the officer disputes.

"I'm telling you that I could see, so I know that's your left hand. Also I could see a gold ring on this finger, so that's obvious it was the left hand," Karsnia tells Craig.

"Well we can dispute that," Craig says. "I'm not going to fight you in court. I reached down with my right hand to pick up the paper."

Karsnia said in a police report that he recognized Craig's hand gesture as a signal aimed at initiating sex. "It should be noted that there was not a piece of paper on the bathroom floor, nor did Craig pick up a piece of paper," he said in the report.

Something doesn't add up. The officer states that Craig signaled something with his left hand. The officer says he knows it was Craig's left hand because of the gold ring on his finger. Craig says it was his right hand and that he was reaching down to pick up a paper.

Now mind you, the story doesn't provide information as to whether Craig was to the left or right of the officer. My question is this. If you are copping a squat in a stall and need to pick up a piece of paper, why would you reach across your body to do so?

of toilet paper off the floor in a public men's room?
