New season, new enthusiasm for both clubs. New QB for CU, and a
Rams fans, are you excited about your prospects vs the Buffs this season? How will your RB Bell be after missing last season with an injury? And how is he gonna react to sharing time with Johnson at RB?
Can the Buffs offense step up after a miserable 2006 campaign? Will the defense be strong enough to carry the club if the offense struggles again?
Post your smack, and thoughts as we kick off the season.

I see a much lower scoring affair again this year. Just as a stab in the dark, I say... CU 16 - CSU 13.

I expect both teams to be in the 20's. I'd lean more towards CSU at this point because I don't know what the Buffs will bring after going 2-10 . I'm excited and really nervous to see Cody at the same time, he knows the offense better than anyone else, he just hasn't taken a game snap yet. Too bad Josh Smith is out for the game this year, that kid is just a sick athlete.
CU should have the guns next year to put up quite a few points- Cody, Smith, Simas, and Celestine will all be in their 2nd years, and they'll have Darrell Scott at TB.

Nationally, this game has zero significance and the networks are loading up the games later in the day. I look forward to seeing Sumler getting some carries after reading so much about him. The Oline is a question mark. So is Cody. In reality, the Buffs will really have to count on the D to pull this one out. TOs could do the trick. All the Buffs have to do, AFAIC, is show improvement from last year. Pretty good chance of that. ;)

Buffs will need to stop Bell, but the DL seems to be coming together from what I hear.
Hawk is on 950 right now. Hopes to have Smith back for FSU. Bernard Jackson may not be back soon due to academics.

How I long for the score to be like that again. The last time the score was really lopsided was in 2001 when CU won by 27. Unfortunately, I see this one being another tight game, with the Buffs coming out on top.

There was not any competition for RB up in Ft. Fun. There RBs last year were a complete disaster. IIRC, they were one of the absolute rushing teams in the country last year. YPC was sub 3 yards. Bell had to have another knee injury to not be named starter, he's in same mold as the McDougle bros, Sapp, etc. Big backs with just enough elusiveness.

Yes, but it was (this close) to being almost 3 yards per carry said Sheep fans ;D
The Coloradoan had an article about the competition between their backs this week. From what you say Pain, it sounds like all it was really meant to do was light a fire under Bell.

Bell's been a QB all camp, he hasn't taken a hit since last summer. He's not going to come out full speed right off the bat. It's a few days before the game and CSU is just finally figuring out who their starting OL will be.

The thing I keep hearing on talk radio and on some mbbs is how CSU has so much more experience than the buffs and they return a whole bunch of starters. I guess you can look at it one of two ways
1. It's good to have experience and some cohesion coming into the new season.
2. These are the same starters that lost 7 straight MWC games last season
They rams have just as many question marks as the Buffs do. One place where I think CU has a major advantage is the Buff DL vs. the CSU OL, especially on the interior with Hypolite and Nichlas...but the depth behind these two studs is no bueno.

Did Nicholas really transfer from Nebraska? He is a load, that kid ...
Pain, I assume your 'no bueno' refers in part to DE Conrad Obi - one of several true freshmen to make 2nd team on the depth chart. I think Sinoi Tau and Ryan Miller are both #2 at LT and RT respectively. And the Hawaiian kid we scrambled to get when whatshisname bolted is #2 at center. I hope Brian Daniels holds up.
I was a bit disappointed that the new WRs aren't higher on the chart .... Celestine is #3 and Simas #4 at the "y" receiver, and Josh Smith is I think #3 at "x" receiver.

Nicholas transferred from Notre Dame. The DE depth doesn't bother me as much as the DT depth. We have two DT's suspended for this game.
The OL depth is scary too, but the 2nd team kids are all very talented. BTW, Brian Daniels graduated;D
Josh Smith would be starting IMO if he were not injured. Celestine will play on Saturday, I'm not quite as sure about Simas. The freshmen have apparently really made Patrick Williams work his butt off and the coaches seem to be loving what they are seeing. Night and day difference from last year.
I can't wait for this game either! Go Buffs!

The one other spot where I think CU has a noticeable advantage is our TEs vs. who ever is covering them.
We have 2 proven TEs, one that got All B12 potential, and two very intriguing alternatives in Joe Sanders and Nate Solder. Solder is 6'9" 270 LBs. I think he might get some looks in the redzone. Sanders, the former linebacker has speed at TE that CU has not seen in a long, long time. He's finally back at the position he was recruited to play. Riar Geer was a stud last year a freshman, leading the team in catches and he's a big boy too at 6'3" 255. Tyson Devree is also a taller TE at 6'5".
Cody was good at finding his TEs in the spring game and the fall scrimmages. I expect them to be a major factor on Sat.

Sure enough through this first quarter, for a frosh QB, he is looking spectacular.
Gotta give CSU credit too, they have some good players on that team. Hanie, although i've never watched him, is supposed to be a tough SOB and Bell coming back from injury should be solid for the Rams. This is a great way to break in the season.

Nice drive by CSU to start the half, Brad Jones is atrocious in coverage and Sperry has eaten his lunch all day.
Also liked CSU's kickoff play to get the ball back.
CU's defense is starting to look the Broncos' D of years past, drop the LBs deep and then hope they have enough speed to close. CSU's doing what everyone did the Broncos, dink and dunk down the field and don't let the D off the field.

You're absolutely right BPC, why wouldnt CU play against a team that has nothing to lose and everything to gain from CU. Meanwhile CU wins... so ****ing what? Just another non-conference foe. Might as well have been Utah that we played today for all that it really meant for CU.

We are entering the age of college football where conference rank means nothing. You really think CSU has nothing to lose? This is football. PRIDE is at stake, no matter how small you think the school is that CU is playing.
You think that CSU/CU doesn't mean anything? In state rivalry? Recruiting?
Just the opposite in my opinion. Winning matters. As does this rivalry.

I actually thought the REAL gut check time - for Cody anyway - was in the third quarter, not the 4th or even OT.
After the Rams' long TD drive to go ahead by 4, they line-drive bounced the onside kickoff, and rolled to another quick TD drive to go up by 11 - things looked very bleak. There were several third down conversions and very close calls on that l-o-n-g drive to get back in the game that proved Cody is a stones-grabbin, take charge field general. Failure was 'round every corner on that drive, and a punt wouldda meant 'game over' in my mind.
Kid's a stud. I don't care if he does throw like a short Bernie Kosar, the kid is a stud.

CSU is all risk, no reward bpc ...
It was different when they were winning 10 games a year back in the 90s, but now it's just a land mine. And we have enough land mines with Arizona State, Georgia, Florida State, Washington, West Virginia, Cal, Oregon ....

Its a great game every year guys. I think every single year since '02 the game has gone down to the wire. And its great for the state. I don't know, maybe when Hawkins returns CU to the dominant program we once were, and we start beating CSU by 40 every year, then maybe the argument can be made. But this game is fun, is something to look forward to, and is great for the state.
Only thing about yesterday that sucked for me anway, was that someone had to lose.

WOW, i would never thought i would see a group of fans afraid to play a in state rival because they might lose to them. lol
I dont care how many times UVA gets spanked by VaTech i would prefer to play them every year. UVA has ended a great many championship hopes of the Hokies even when there was nothing going for UVA that year. A rivalry is a rivalry and to run away from it is sad. If your afraid to play a in state rival why not just load up with softees. Good thing the CU players dont think like that. lmao
Yup, I'm all for keeping with this game. Who cares if it is a landmine. If we are a good enough team, we will win it.
I finished up my college career at a program, Missouri State, which was I-AA and not even close to being as talented as Mizzou. We got bought off by all the schools surrounding our states from Kansas to Arkansas, to Okie State... Mizzou would not play us for the very reason you guys talk about, ie, "too much to lose".
Maybe in that case you could assume that Mizzou was better because we didn't play but the southern half of Missouri thinks that Mizzou is a bunch of pu$$ies because they wouldn't play the game. Cowards is another suitable name. They were already smarting from us knocking them off in basketball (sweet sixteen in 98' or 99') recently around that time as well as in baseball (college world series).
Call me simple, call me old school. I think there are natural battle lines that are intense, fun to watch and need to be maintained. The rocky mountain showdown is one of those matchups and is quickly becoming one of the hottest rivalries in the midwest-west coast.
I think if we have a great season this year it was because we just jumped off that springboard of beating CSU in a tightly fought game.
ON TO OTHER NEWS: I had a chance to go back and watch the game and Cody Hawkins looked great. He has great anticipation along with instincts in the pocket. His arms isn't the greatest but he can throw the ball and his accuracy is pretty good. He is fun to watch.
The team as a whole has a much different feel to it. The OLine looked great and despite our defenses short comings, I think they have the ability to be very good. They just seem to be fundamentally sound and disciplined in their approach. They'll get better.
This team is vastly different than two years ago when we went to the big 12 championship game. We are much better and we actually look like we could be on the field with teams like Okie State and A&M and even Nebraska.
They'll be a fun team to watch this year.

Anubis, how often do your Cavaliers play VCU, Wesleyan College and other in state U's other than Tech? Yeah, thats what I thought. If I recall correctly arent VT and UV in the same conferece btw? Of course they are gonna play each other every year numbskull.
And who the **** said we were afraid to play CSU. Learn some reading skills brother. Your selective reading comprehension on this thread is embarrassing. I said, I dont know why we bother playing the same team every year if they arent in-conference. Its just pointless unless it has some real meaning.
Can you comprend that? Or too busy being preoccupied running through chicken smack. Bawcaw!

It does have meaning. Have you ever heard of "In-state recruiting"?

Pretty simple logic actually. VCU and Co. are not rivals. VTECH and UVA are. CSU and CU are. You dont have to be a in the same conference to be a rival. It doesnt work the same way in the College as it does in the NFL. And you dont have to say that your afraid to play CSU Pezzy because its bleeding through on your skirt. Sack up brother. Dont be afraid, it will be ok. If CU is as good as you make them out to be they shouldnt be worried. And if CU is as good as they think they are they should wipe the floor with CSU correct? But, oh yea, they rarely do that dont they? Wonder why?

In-state recruiting... not exactly a hot-topic in Colorado schools BPC. CU does the majority of their recruiting out of state, and CSU does most of theirs in-state. Its not exactly like there is a competition between schools to get top in-state recruits. But, I can see your point if it were Universities like A&M and UT.

Anubis, sometimes I wonder if you wear your heart right on your sleeve. Sack up, and read the thread with a bit of reading comprehension. Seriously, I dont have time to explain the entire totality of the arguement to you just to get you to understand beyond a third grade reading level. Buh bye.

Ive read it just fine Pez, seriously. You havent done anything in this thread to really explain why you dont want to play them. You say CSU isnt worth it for CU to play even though they are rival schools. Vatech was playing UVA long before they joined in the same conference. I mean, if CU cant wipe the floor with a " lowly " school like CSU (in your opinion) than how do they expect to compete with the FSU's and Miami's? Its pretty common for teams to schedule their in state rivals year in and year out but you dont hear them complaining about it. Sorry to break the news to you but Championship quality teams arent afraid to play anybody no matter how low on the totem poll they are. Not to mention a rival in state school.

The only effect the Rocky Mtn Showdown has on in-state recruiting is that it might convince someone to stay in-state rather than leave the state. It has 0 effect on CU's ability to recruit against CSU since they rarely go after the same players, and CU hasn't lost one of those recruiting battles in a long, long time.
