View Full Version : A Lesson From The WRs

Just one observation about the whipsaw nature of impressions. Several weeks ago the board was screaming about the disaster that was our WR crew, and calling for all sorts of trade/FA panicky options. It seemed like we had only one WR -- Javon -- and all question marks.
Well, if this game demonstrates anything, it is that our WR crew has the potential to be scary good. Marshall looks great. Clark looks good. Hixon looked pretty good. Stokely looks good. And of course Javon, even with dropsies, looks good. Even without Rod we can put three or four wideouts on the field that can burn a team. Factor in that they are mostly all youngsters, with size and speed, and suddenly our WR situation looks very very good.
Something to keep in mind as we panic about LBs, DL, and OL.

i think we no longer need to panic about OL either. DL and LB are the only things stopping this from being a SB caliber team, and if moss crowder and thomas step it up, we have almost all the pieces :D

Yeah, the OLine looked great last night. I was very impressed with the pass blocking.

The tackling is sloppy but basically the defense ran a cover 2 all night. I thought Bates defense were based on press coverage and man to man defense?

You all realize we just played the Browns at home right? Just Checking, but the WR's are looking much more solid.

What I liked the most, is Cutler's ability to spread the ball around and not focus on his primary guy. Walker, Marshall, Hixon, Graham, Stokely, Johnson, Sapp, Clark. Whoever was on the field had a good chance of a pass coming their way and to the skill players' credit, most times they stepped up and made the catches.

Yep, he's Manning-esque in his ability to spread the ball around. I used to get so sick of Jake only throwing to Rod.

I think the Browns are a much better team this year, so I am not going to discredit our moments of goodness last night to a "crappy team". Our offense was looking good last night and there's a lot to be hopeful for.
I just love waiting Jay. I'm a self admitted fanboy, but seeing him control the play is a joy to watch. Having to suffer "Run me down Ramsey" follow him in the later quarters is just painful.
Our WRs gang is going to be one big pile of stud.

I just finished watching the game and I agree with some of the other posters that said Jay's poise isn't what it seemed to be last year. He's also not getting sacked as much nor fumbling the ball so maybe that's just part of his adjustments but I wouldn't say I'm 100% comfortable with him taking leaps and bounds in progression this year.

The one thing that really stuck out at me was how Jay was throwing off his back foot alot. He would feel the rush or panic and just try to muscle the ball in rather than plant and fire the ball. Why? Has he lost his trust in the o-line or just the gunslinger mentallity creeping back in to his game? This is the one thing in his game right now that concerns me.:ouwknow:

I think so also. Winslow, Edwards and Lewis are a nice arsenal. Frye is settling down some and the OL is finally healthy. They're going to put some points up on people.

I think our D is gonna be plenty good this season. For the most part we're playing base D and not showing our hand. I'm sure the press coverage and the blitzes will be there come opening day and the Bills won't have much to exploit in terms of blitzes and coverages. We really need to gel though.

Also, we are talking about the Bills. Who do they really have on offense that scares you? Evans is darn good, but Price is mediocre and have you seen Lynch's preseason. Yuck. Losman may be good in the future, but I'm not terribly impressed right now.

The o-line looked better but not near good enough. And I still say that's against the Browns...at home...last real game of the pre-season...knowing that Jay will have his own growing pains.
And the running game survived by running back effort not gapping holes, as far I as recall.
So why worry.

Exactly. Nobody really.
I know we have a little history of losing openers, but this one should be in the bag. I had a bad feelin about Miami in '05 and St. Louis had plenty of weapons to attack us with last season. Plummer being one of them. I think Henry is gonna run the ball right down their throat.
Oh yeah. The WRs look really good though. Better then I expected.

Our defense has given up yards in huge gashes all pre-season - run and pass - in all 3 games.
And the Quinn pass to the end zone? That was a TD. It wouldda been challenged and reversed during regular season. So adding that TD and one dropped ball, 12-day pro Brady Quinn went 9-11 and 2 TDs against mostly our starting defense. I'm very worried.
The 49ers starters, all the Cowboys, and Quinn moved the ball at will against us. I don't think we should be laughing at J.P. Losman right now, I think we should be very concerned.

But getting into the optimistic nature of Telluride's thread here, yes. The WRs and Cutler and Selvin Young all looked very very good.
And ... NATE JACKSON! As usual, he looks great. If the starting lineup was based only on performance, he would move ahead of Scheffler on the pass-catching TE depth chart. And as far as the blocking TE, somebody said Stephen Alexander might be in trouble. I'm doubting it. His only real competition has moved over to play OT the last two weeks, and I haven't seen Teyo Johnson at all.
Another point I haven't seen discussed in the half-dozen threads I've looked at: CHRIS KUPER was playing Left OT for most of the 4th quarter. That's right. Not right guard, but rather Left Offensive Tackle. WTF? ???

Yeah ... kinda scary, huh? I keep falling back on "preseason doesn't mean d***." (BTW - I'm on the second draft now of my "I Told You SO" thread on Matt Schaub. He's gotta lotta haters here on the Mane, and I took names ;D)
