Know what... in 1999, Broncos fans could have justifiably been on Chefs Planet posting this same type of crap. After all, at the time, TD was arguably the most feared/respected RB in the league... having been named the NFL's MVP after the '98 season and all. One unfortunate play early in the '99 season and his career was... for all intents and purposes... finished.

I'm glad LJ got his $$. The Chefs shouldn't have made him hold out.

I've been hearing two different views on LJ on the radio and tv, etc. throughout the day.

One thought is that the Chiefs got a steal on the LJ deal because many were expecting that he would get "more than LT money". IMO, he doesn't deserve more than LT but considering how salaries have gone up (i believe it's 35%) since 2004 when LT signed his deal, that's why many were expecting that he would get somewhere towards $23+ million guaranteed.

The other thought has been beaten to death around here. He's come off a very brutal season, breaking the record for carries in a season. He's a bit of a bigger back and doesn't shy away from contact so he's got a little wear and tear on him and people speculate that he may not last as long as some of the more prototypical type of running backs today.

While he's one of the best runners in the game today, he's not your complete back. He's pretty much a one dimensional back, though elite that one regard. Guys like LT, Westbrook, Bush and Jackson bring the extra dimension of the passing game that LJ doesn't. He doesn't bring the dimension of the return game like Bush does. He can't pass block like LT or some others can.

With those factors in mind, some people thought it was too much money to give him. I guess Carl Peterson thought so too (initially).

The thing I would be wary of as a Chiefs fan is how LJ is going to do this season. It's not a matter of him breaking down (this season). If he doesn't come into camp in great football shape, he could be looking at nagging injuries all year long. The Chiefs need to be wary of that or bring him along slowly at the start of the season.

But I think he has a couple to a few good years left in him but the Chiefs are rebuilding and I don't think he'll be able to last long enough or at least still be running at an elite level to see that rebuilding come together.

I am happy for you Bob. LJ is a good RB, and with your offensive question marks, you need all the rays of sunshine you can get. Last year he had every reason to play hard - going for the contract extension and BIG MONEY.

This year (unless this contract is completely incentive loaded), all he has to play for is pride. Sometimes, perhaps a playoff run (how likely is that?) might be enough of a reason to play hard, probably the occasional AFC West division rivalry games will matter somewhat, but now LJ will be playing to AVOID INJURY.

I've seen it a million times. LJ will coast unless it is absolutely necessary or unless his pride is really riding on the outcome.

Good luck, KC, getting your money's worth out of this guy - your crocodile tears will turn Arrowhead's field to mush.

He got the money - you get the shaft.

Hard Knocks Is Finally Worth Watching

August 21, 2007 3:02 PM

Now that L.J. has ended his holdout in Kansas City, we may finally have an intriguing storyline for Wednesday's edition of Hard Knocks.

Actually, it might be too late for HBO to turn it around in time, which means we'll be treated to another week of pompous GM Carl Peterson looking for the nearest camera and saying gravely, "Let's stay the course with what we're doing at quarterback."

I do think HBO has done a nice job of capturing some honest moments, although it couldn't have picked a team with less star quality (OK, maybe the Texans). When you're relying on punter Dustin Colquitt for comic relief, there are some fundamental problems. And I'm not sure how much I care about this "Turk and Tank" subplot. I will say the Tank snoring scene was pretty remarkable.

But back to the Johnson contract extension. As I may have pointed out before, this deal was never in doubt. In effect, the Chiefs basically gave Johnson training camp off. This allowed the 28-year-old workhorse to rest his legs after an NFL-record 416 carries last season, and gave Peterson the opportunity to promote his tough-guy image.

As I was reading the other night in my Pro Football Prospectus 2007, Johnson is basically doomed to have a down season after the Chiefs ran him into the ground last season. Exhaustive research (turning the page) revealed that Eric Dickerson is the only running back who didn't see a significant dropoff after a 400-carry season.

Kansas City needs to commit to using Michael Bennett in an expanded role this season, but I have my doubts. I also have my doubts about an offensive line that keeps losing major pieces every season.

If you're thinking about passing on Johnson at No. 3 in your fantasy draft, know that you're not alone.

LJ is a very good player and I look forward to playing him whenever. I like to see the matchups and see how players play against him. Until DEN's DL gets better, and that remains to be seen, LJ will have some success against DEN. Like the 6 point performance the Chiefs put up in DEN last year ;D Until KC fixes their offense, LJ instills little fear, but plenty of attention.

Thank god Derrick Johnson still sucks! His performance was like the stockmarket versus MIA. Missed tackle, Missed read, unblocked on blitz look how good I am ;D I'll take that 1/3 ratio anyday. Misused as much as Williams for us, and not good in making and executing reads at SAM.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- His 25-day holdout made Larry Johnson the most highly paid player in Kansas City Chiefs history. The Pro Bowl running back is not sure, however, if it will make him ready for a full role in the season opener.

Asked Wednesday if he thought he'd be 100 percent ready by Sept. 9 when the Chiefs open at Houston, Johnson said, "No, it'll take a little bit more than that."

* VIDEO: Johnson on film

"Obviously, coaches are going to do a great job trying to get me on track to where week two or week three of the season I can hit my full stride," he said. "I'm going to try pick up as fast as I can."

The 27-year-old running back appears to be in top shape after working out twice a day in Arizona while his teammates went through training camp in River Falls, Wis. He signed a five-year contract extension on Tuesday, extending his commitment for five years beyond 2007. Just minutes later, he ran onto the practice field to the cheers of teammates who hadn't expected to see him.

The deal includes a guaranteed $19 million. He would receive $27.7 million in the first three years of the extension.

Many think that taking off during camp and the first three exhibition games could prove beneficial after Johnson carried an NFL-record 416 times last year.

"What I know about myself is I've never been a fast starter coming out of the blocks in a season," he said. "I've always been -- the last eight games is when I really turn it on. So I'm going to push myself as hard as I can to try to even it out."

He's not ready to say absolutely he won't be at full speed by Sept. 9.

"It all depends on how I'm feeling. Of course, the adrenaline takes over," he said. "You're excited about playing. So we'll see. It all depends on what type of game we'll get ourselves into.

"It will come in due time. My legs are as fresh as can be right now. It will all help me when it comes to the last week of the season."

Making big money will mean a bigger responsibility, Johnson said. Often in his first four years the 6-1, 235-pounder has been described as moody and uncommunicative. Those days are over, he said.

"It gives you a lot of responsibility," he said. "Whether you want it or don't want it, the responsibility is they made you the highest-paid guy in franchise history. You have to own up to it not only on the football field but in the community, and off the field. Those are the types of things you have to live with being the top-paid guy. You have to live with those responsibilities."
Most rushing yards in any 25-game span (since 1970)
Player Start date End date Yards
Barry Sanders Sept. 14, 1997 Nov. 22, 1998 3,192
Earl Campbell Nov. 22, 1979 Oct. 11, 1981 3,178
Barry Sanders Sept. 7, 1997 Nov. 15, 1998 3,146
Terrell Davis Sept. 7, 1997 Nov. 22, 1998 3,141
Larry Johnson Nov. 6, 2005 Dec. 31, 2006 3,140

It was family responsibility, he said, that led him to hold out and demand big money after breaking the team rushing record two years in a row and emerging as one of the league's premier backs.

"It's all about family," he said. "When you have the ability and have the opportunity to be the top earner for your immediate family, for your generation, you've got to take the chance. It wasn't like the money was all for me, all to spend on me. I have a dozen little baby cousins. I have an uncle. I have aunts, I have grandmothers, I have nieces. In the future, I'm going to have nieces and nephews. That's for them. I've got to be smart as far as helping my generation, my unborn kids and their unborn kids. If I have the opportunity to take care of them for the long haul, I have to take that opportunity."

Holding out, he said, "was the last thing I really wanted to do."

"I talked to Jim Brown a week ago. He said, `That's something I hate to see happen, somebody out.'

"But I had no other choice. I had to be heard and taken more seriously rather than somebody who was just going to play out a contract, and if I got hurt, then what was I going to do now?"

I know you are smarter than this.

Want me to breakdown how each one of those backs...well, broke down, after their respective 400 carry seasons?

Florida_Bronco
08-23-2007, 04:14 AM
Well lets look at this objectively. He's going to be 28 later this season, power backs usually experience significant drop off around 30, so you figure at most he's got two seasons left where he is going to be a serious threat. After that, he'll probably have a year or two of being a solid but unspectacular runner and then fade off as a journeyman type back. Of course, all this hinges on the assumption that he doesn't shred his knee in the next year or so, which is more likely than not given his workload recently.

I'm not sure what clauses and the breakdown of his contract is, but the general idea of giving a large 6 year contract to a 27-28 year old running back that is already at the end of his physical prime, is not very smart. If Larry's production takes a nosedive after this season (another major possibility) then they are on the books for a large amount of money in a declining player or dead money if they release him.

Now you gotta wonder about the motivation behind the Chiefs signing LJ to this contract. In my opinion, this was all to please the fans. Realistically, there is almost no chance the Chiefs can build a team complete enough to make a legitimate playoff run while LJ is still a top 5 running back. With Croyle starting this year, it will basically be a throwaway season for the Chiefs and they know that. Logic says they would be better off moving Larry for some draft picks and using those to build a solid young core for the team, but that there is logic and logic was never a strong suit for Carl Peterson. Carl resigned the only legitimate "star" on his team, which will keep the fans in the stands but at the same time turns the near future of his team into the sacrifical lamb.

I guess that's all par for the course with Carl though, as long as the team is good enough to keep fans in the stands, that is all he's concerned about.

Is this really what you have hung your fandom on Bob? The fact that LJ will continue to get carries in garbage time when our D is playing the pass since you will be playing from behind.

Personally, I would be upset with my RB if we were down by three scores and my coach was feeding my star RB the rock because he was whining about getting his carries. I would think that my coach would "play to win the game" and allow my QB to throw some balls downfield and try to pput some points on the board.

Besides, I am more worried about facing McFadden again than I am seeing LJ at any point this season.

PF: 114 for the Broncos... while KC has scored a pathetic 32.
PA: 84 for the Broncos.. ugh! er.. but San Diego has even more, and KC? At 78 PA, I wouldn't be gloating about our D that much.

You know he has lost a ton but fail to admit it and can only in typical Bob fashion cherry pick stats from last game even though he didn't do anything until the game was over.

I've been watching Larry since he was drafted. I've watched the same plays over and over and over again for years, because I've built up an incredible video archive of all things Larry Johnson. I don't see a different player. Same burst, same power, same sweet feet. Oh, I do see a guy who worked on his pass receiving, so there is one difference.

All the guy has ever needed is a hole. It's sad that the Chiefs haven't done enough to give him that hole the last year or so, but things are looking up. We'll see if it continues.

When Croyle plays, the ball seems to end up in Champ's hands. Last year I believe Champ intercepted Croyle in both games.

If you knew anything about football, which you don't, you would know that CBs need the DL to get pressure on the QB. CBs can only cover for a short period of time. We didn't get much pressure on Huard today.

Know what... in 1999, Broncos fans could have justifiably been on Chefs Planet posting this same type of crap. After all, at the time, TD was arguably the most feared/respected RB in the league... having been named the NFL's MVP after the '98 season and all. One unfortunate play early in the '99 season and his career was... for all intents and purposes... finished.

L.J. ALLEGEDLY SPIT IN WOMAN’S FACE
Posted by Mike Florio on October 19, 2008, 8:02 p.m.

We’ve picked up some more information about the most recent incident involving Chiefs running back Larry Johnson, a woman, and a night club.

Per a league source, the most recent case involves an allegation that Johnson spat in a woman’s face.

Though it’s not behavior that we condone, it’s not as bad as laying hands on a member of the fairer sex. But, still, it’s something for which L.J. could be getting in trouble — either with the authorites or with the league. Or both.

MORE TROUBLE FOR L.J.
Posted by Mike Florio on October 19, 2008, 7:07 p.m.

Typically, a great your player wants to get a long-term, big-money extension before injuries impair his ability to continue to perform at a high level.

In the case of Chiefs running back Larry Johnson, he got paid before he became a turd.

Of course, a strong argument could be made that Johnson already was a turd. If he was, it wasn’t enough to keep the Chiefs from giving him a big pile of money. It’s the kind of money that the Chiefs wouldn’t have given to him if they knew then what they know now.

In addition to a pending assault charge involving allegations that he went Heisman Trophy on a woman at a night club earlier this year, Johnson has had a string of tardiness issues, and reportedly refused to come out of a game earlier in the year.

But now there’s more. According to Michael Smith of ESPN.com, Johnson recently was involved in another physical altercation with a woman at a night club. The latest development came during the team’s recent bye week, and Johnson is expected to be suspended by the league.

“It’s just a matter of for how long,” a source told Smith.

The Chiefs have acknowledged the situation. “We are aware of the most recent incident involving Larry Johnson and we are very disappointed with his involvement,” Carl Peterson said in a statement on Sunday. “We will cooperate fully with the Kansas City authorities who are investigating the matter. We have also made the NFL office in New York aware of the incident and officials there are conducting their own independent investigation. Based upon the NFL Player Conduct Policy, we will have no further comment.”

It’d be interesting to know whether the Chiefs knew about this most recent incident when they were shopping Johnson. If they did, and if they didn’t disclose it to potential suitors, their conduct would be even worse than that of the Lions, who were trying to trade Jon Kitna while he was injured.

Ooh! Finally! My turn!

So what is the point, Boob? I can only assume, re-reading your previous posts, that it's the coaches fault for losing the game, because they took the ball out of LJ's hands. You led the game into the 3rd quarter, and because LJ only got 1 carry in the 4th, it's the coaches fault that the Chefs lost, right? Is that your point?!

Hey, what were LJ's stats through the end of the 3rd quarter? Lemme check.....ah there we go! 10 carries for 25 yards. 2.5 YPC! Stellar! Are you still sure it's the coaches' fault that you lost today? You sure none of the blame falls on LJ and his pathetic effort through the first 3 quarters?

F'n Christ, Boob. We all know you're the biggest POS troll on the OM, but could you at least attempt to make a valid point every once in a while? It might barely make you tolerable if you had a rudimentary knowledge of the game before posting such ridiculous claims that have absolutely no bearing on the actual situation being discussed. Stop posting for the sake of posting. Try to make sense. Just once per day, try to make sense! Actually, no. Our running game never got going because they just kept throwing, throwing, throwing when it was already proven in the last Broncos game that our line could handle your front seven.

I wouldn't say we lost the game because of it. We lost the game because we have a ****ty quarterback. But if you were wondering why Larry had a pedestrian game, there's why. The coaching staff never showed an interest in establishing the run against a defense we had destroyed in September.
