SAN FRANCISCO -- With only five carries, running back Travis Henry showed why the Denver Broncos signed him this offseason.

Henry carried on five of the eight plays for the starting offense Monday night, gaining 27 yards and scoring on a 1-yard run.

The Broncos stopped the San Francisco 49ers on fourth and goal with less than two minutes remaining and won their preseason opener 17-13 at Monster Park.

Henry was the star, showing some shifty moves and a lot of power in his brief appearance.

“We’re going to run the ball and mix in the pass because we got a great quarterback and great receivers,” Henry said. “But we’re trying to have that attitude in the run game, and we showed that on the first drive.”

On Henry’s second he was running left and split two defenders with a hard cut inside, and picked up 9 yards.

“There’s not a lot of human beings that can make that run,” Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said.

On his next carry Henry broke a tackle in the backfield and picked up 6 yards. Henry scored at the end of Denver’s first drive and most of the offensive starters were pulled from the game.

“We can’t be disappointed,” said quarterback Jay Cutler, who completed a 24-yard pass and had a 16-yard run.

The starting defense played two series and gave up a field goal and touchdown. Running back
Michael Robinson’s 1-yard run gave San Francisco a 10-7 lead. The Broncos played a basic defense, but Shanahan said that wasn’t an excuse.

“You can play vanilla and still play great defense,” Shanahan said. “We have a lot of work to do.”

Broncos backup fullback Troy Fleming caught a 3-yard touchdown pass from Patrick Ramsey early in the second quarter. The Broncos got a 26-yard field goal by Brandon Pace in the fourth quarter, and linebacker Louis Green knocked down a fourth-down pass when the 49ers drove to Denver’s 3-yard line in the final minutes.

No doubt.

I didnt realize that we actually employed a defensive line for that game. Ugh.
