Warren trade seems imminent
By Bill Williamson
Denver Post Staff Writer

San Francisco - The Broncos spent Monday continuing to work the phones in an attempt to trade veteran defensive tackle Gerard Warren.

Warren declined to comment, but acknowledged he expects to be traded as soon as today.

Teams most interested in Warren appear to be Washington, New Orleans and Tennessee. Indianapolis and the New York Giants declined initial overtures from the Broncos.

The Broncos were offered a starter from an undisclosed team for Warren, but since the starter is not at a position of need, talks stalled. They would like a linebacker or wide receiver, and probably would take a second- day draft pick for Warren.

Coach Mike Shanahan said after the 17-13 win over the 49ers at Monster Park that the Broncos thought they had a trade completed, but it fell through. He declined further comment but indicated a conclusion to the Warren issue could come today.

If a trade is not completed by today, it appears Warren will not accompany the Broncos to Dallas tonight and he could be cut, though the team will hold out for a trade. The Broncos practice with the Cowboys this week before playing Saturday's preseason game at Texas Stadium. Warren was held back in Denver when the Broncos flew to San Francisco on Sunday because of the trade talks.

Warren is being shopped because he doesn't fit the team's new two-gap scheme used by Jim Bates, the assistant head coach in charge of defense.

Amon Gordon started alongside Sam Adams on Monday in front of Jimmy Kennedy. Gordon, on the practice squad last year, mostly worked with the second and third teams in training camp. He was told Sunday he'd start against the 49ers.

"I was taken aback," Gordon said. "It was an incredible feeling to start tonight."

Shanahan said the reason to trade Warren is because he thought the defensive front was "10 deep."

Meanwhile, reports of the Broncos' interest in Giants holdout defensive end Michael Strahan are false. The Broncos haven't had talks with the Giants, who at this point aren't interested in dealing Strahan.

Moss has sore knee

First-round draft pick Jarvis Moss left in the second quarter and appeared to be favoring the knee he twisted Aug. 6, but returned. He took a few more plays before leaving.

"It was no big deal at all," Moss said. "Everyone just wants to be cautious."

Fellow defensive linemen Tim Crowder and Kenny Peterson also had minor injuries, but both returned.

Smith staying behind

Wide receiver Rod Smith will stay back in Denver to rehabilitate from hip surgery in February.

Smith is on the physically unable to perform list. If he comes back, it likely won't be until the regular season.

Footnotes

Second-year offensive lineman Chris Kuper played left guard in the second quarter, right guard in the third quarter and right tackle in the fourth quarter. ...

Denver's defense had four sacks. ...

The team will watch film today at Dove Valley before flying to Dallas in the afternoon. ...

There was a moment of silence for former 49ers coach Bill Walsh, who died July 30. ...

The Broncos opened the game in a two-tight end set with Daniel Graham at the line of scrimmage and Nate Jackson wide. Jackson played for Tony Scheffler, who started practicing last week and should play Saturday at Dallas. ...

Paul Ernster started the game kicking off. Todd Sauerbrun was the starting punter. ...

Domenik Hixon, in his first NFL action, was a starter and returned punts early. ...

D.D. Lewis started at strongside linebacker. ...

Last weekend, Broncos safety John Lynch called the Solana Beach (Calif.) Little League baseball team to offer advice and wish the players good luck in the Western Regional championships. Lynch played on the team when he was growing up. The team lost in the title game. ...

The Broncos are still talking to the agent of Warrick Holdman about a potential injury settlement. Holdman is out at least three months with a spinal cord injury.
Reviewing the five goals

Broncos reporter Bill Williamson listed five goals for the team in its preseason opener Monday night at San Francisco. Here is how the Broncos fared:

1. Stay healthy: With most of their starters out of the game long before the end of the first quarter, the Broncos avoided major injuries to significant players.

2. Cutler needs to make plays: It was clear the offensive emphasis was on the running game. In Jay Cutler's only series, the Broncos passed on two of eight plays. Cutler completed one pass, a 24-yard gain by receiver Javon Walker. Cutler, the Broncos' second-year quarterback, had a 16-yard run to set up Travis Henry's 1-yard touchdown run.

3. Become special: The special teams of new coach Scott O'Brien didn't make any glaring mistakes, and Quincy Morgan set up a touchdown with a 58-yard kickoff return.

4. Young receivers need to make plays: Domenik Hixon, a fourth-round draft pick in 2006, started the game and Brian Clark also played extensively. Hixon finished with one reception for 21 yards. Clark didn't have a catch.

5. D.J. needs to get acclimated: In limited playing time, new middle linebacker D.J. Williams looked comfortable as the leader of the defense. He could get more playing time Saturday night at Dallas in the second preseason game.

Anyone else worried about Moss's knee?

He pulled up and went gimp. Wonder if that knee needs surgery.

I doubt he'll need surgery but they need to let it rest for like a week and let it heal completely. They have a lot of money wrapped up in him and I'd want him fresh for the whole season rather than forcing him to play and making him gimpy every other game.

Outside of one play...there was absolutely NOTHING special about ST.

And nobody said there was....the summary was spot-on I thought. Good return by Morgan, and San Fran - though they had decent starting field position most of the game - never scored on ST returns and never even broke a good one like the Broncos did.

Much like those complaining about the defense, you can't expect to fix everything in your first pre-season game.

Overall, I liked the distance Ernster was getting on most of his kickoffs (especially considering the game was being played at sea level - I think all of his would've been touchbacks at Mile High) and loved the hangtime and distance on Sauerbraun's punts. Kicks like that at sea level make me feel a little better about the state of the ST.
