I think Shanny offered him an out, not told him not to come back. Shanny is the boss, if he "told" him not to come back, I doubt he'd be back.

I think he just wanted to let Rod know he didn't need too.
What about the chick calling Darrent Williams, "Darrent Smith"?

I'll need to see more, such as what was the context is was said in.
Still on the face of it, it looks rather cold on Shanahan's part.

His hip is really taking a while to come back, he has lost a step, and sometimes you have to be told to hang it up because you can't tell yourself. That being sad Coach also told him if he so chooses there is a spot for him if he is ready to come back.

That was pathetic but Tafoya is not what I would call a chick. I wish he would have correcter her ass on live TV. Say something like, "Excuse me, before we go any further it is Darrent Williams not Darrent Smith. If you wish to speak his name then speak it right, until then run along and educate yourself."

I wouldn't trust any of the info they were handing out tonight. Not only dud that reporter get Darrents name wrong, but the title under the interview called Rod a 2-time pro-bowler (he has been there 3 times) and earlier in the broadcast it list Crowder as a rookie from florida.

I believe that too... you are a true gentleman and someone who should definately be interviewed in the future on the sideline of a NFL game. I really hope you can be more involved in the sideline interviews and i appreciate all you have done for the denver broncos.

Y'know, it's not like Darrent's murder wasn't front-page news for quite a while there.... if she was going to discuss the topic with Rod, she should have gotten his name right. And it would be a nice gesture if ESPN issued an apology to Darrent's family and friends.
The whole ESPN broadcast was unprofessional, imho... the broadcast-booth chatter about unrelated, irrelevant stuff while the game was being played gave the impression that ESPN perceived the game as a mere afterthought and not the primary reason viewers had turned on their TVs. If we wanted to watch a talk show, we'd tune in to PTI instead of the game.

I noticed when she was interviewing Rod , it seemed like Rod had a hard time hearing everything she was saying , because the crowd noise kept getting loud from the niners converting big plays. I think otherwise if Smith did hear what she said, I believe Rod would of corrected her right then. JMHO.

Yeah you are probably right. They spent a lot of time talking about it at the start of the game. I thought she would at least have the name down pat but then again its easy to say the name of the person you are talking to when refering to another player. So I guess I am being too hard. Its like the new 9news weather girl. Her name is Becky Ditchfield but I am waiting for the day they call her Decky Bitchfield. People slip that up all the time.

Nothing is for sure off this interview cause of the crowd and noise but if in fact he cant come back I think we have a good coach ready to go. Rod is a bronc from the start.
Tafoya just goofed on the name, I'm sure she didn't mean to. Some of you sound like you want to stone her or something.
Back to the point of the thread - I tell ya, Rod may not make this team as a player but you could tell from how he talked and what he said about Javon, he's the real deal when it comes to a leader. He spoke about his love for the Broncos even after he's not playing anymore. He NEEDS to be coaching for us if he won't make it on the 53 man roster. PERIOD!!!

Its the template they use to flash player information.
Everything on there was a variable that a program inserts the proper player info into. You should never see it.

Regarding ESPN, you are exactly right. I was screaming every time during an interview, the screen shrank on my TV. I didn't tune in to see the interview, I tuned into see the freakin game. ESPN sucks.
With regard to Rod, all one needs to know is that Rod took care of the Broncos many times over the course of his career and now it is time for the Broncos to take care of Rod. Shanny has given Rod all the time he needs to heal from offseason surgery. Anything less from Shanny reflects poorly on Shanahan and Shanahan knows it.
You guys are being rediculous. She slipped up using Rod Smith's last name with Darrent.
That's what I thought too. No harm. I'm sure everybody who knows NFL knows who she was talking about. Heck, our president goofs more then that. Probably not doing her any favors by comparing her to W..............lol.
As for the MNF guys - I like Jaws but the other two I could care less about. They need to fire the other two twits and hire Shanon Sharp. He and Jaws would be perfect. Plenty of football knowledge and Shanon would have all the right lines. DO IT - DO IT - DO IT.

She frequently blows names though.....I wasn't very surprised by it to be honest about it.
About Rod...Shanahan said take all the time you need. I'm sure if Rod came back and wasn't productive enough in Mike's eyes, he'd send him on his way.....afterall, he didn't bat an eye dispatching Wilson when he became a liability due to injury.
As for the MNF announce team....No Joey T, which means the new team is a vast improvement, Kornheiser or not.

Uh - it's called being responsible and getting the best and most healthy 53 guys you can. Not playing favorites for guys who have played well in the past. If that's all it took, Jerry Rice would still be on the team. Cmon, understand the nature of the NFL, please. And the last time I checked, Rod was getting paid to play for us so he has been taken care of, very well I might add. Broncos owe him nothing but gratitude and thanks and a coaching spot if he wants it. They DON"T owe him a roster spot if he can't play and beat out somebody else. Just look at GB and Favre. That's what happens when your owner and coach listen to the fans instead of doing what is best for the team. It's about winning, not hanging on to the glory years of past.

You don't get it. I have never said ROD wont' be on the team OR make the 53 man roster. I said if he doesn't heal quickly and can at least comeback by the 4th game or so, he won't be on the team. I said that Shanny will not save a roster spot for anybody if he can't play or beat somebody out. So week 6 rolls around and Rod still can't get healthy enough to beat out somebody, you think Shanny is still going to bring him back? Hey, you're allowed to have your opinion I guess. And my guess is that if Shanny has the balls to cut Rice, the best receiver to ever play the game, he will have the balls to cut Rod if he can't get back to full health relatively soon. We're still 3 preseason games away from start of season and if Rod isn't showing significant signs that he could be back within a few games after the start of the season, he won't be coming back.

"Uh - it's called being responsible and getting the best and most healthy 53 guys you can. Not playing favorites for guys who have played well in the past. " You are correct. If Rod cannot heal by a certain time, by week 6 I believe (however long a player can remain on PUP and still be activated), he will probably be cut. However, I believe Rod will heal and will be activated, and Shanny will give him however long he needs. I chose not to elaborate further on my last post because you make the ridiculous comparison between Rod Smith and an aging veteran, well past his prime, that has no history with the organization (jerry rice). Rod won multiple superbowls with the Broncos, took multiple paycuts, never complained, played through major league pain, was a team leader, and has been with the team for longer than 10 years. I understand the NFL perfectly. It's called loyalty and your comparison between Rod Smith and Jerry Rice is terrible and I mean terrible.
Shanahan understands that Rod Smith is a very special case. He is the first player since TD, that I can remember, where he felt obligated to give every chance possible to heal from an injury to compete for a roster spot. That is the point of my first post in this thread.

Shanny said Rod can take all the time he needs. Jerry Rice means **** to the Broncos and is not accurate comparison
And as we seen with Warren, if a player is not in the plans - he wont make the trip. Rod was on the sideline...no?
I am still confused at this thread - has something changed from what Shanny himself said no less than a week ago??

I understand why everyone is upset but this kind of thing happens all the time, and remember this was their first broadcast of the year as well. The teams had plenty of hiccups why wouldn't the TV crew? She meant no disrespect, and honestly in this era of "If it bleeds it leads" TV journalism the DWill tragedy is old news, the story of the day was Bill Walsh's recent passing. Notice how even the local media treats Damian Nash's death as a afterthought, Javon Walker's grief is a bigger story than the open case against the shooters.

While I realize that casual football fans don't take preseason seriously at all, the way ESPN allowed the "chatter" to take precedence over the game tonight really annoyed me. Yeah, I know Bill Walsh recently passed on and all (and condolences to his family and friends) but I don't think that Jerry Rice's thoughts on the loss should have been featured above the game... or that the screen should have been minimized so as to accommodate all the chitchat. A lot of us had been looking forward for a long time to our first glimpse of the '07 Denver Broncos... and I, for one, feel shortchanged. When I turn on a football game, I'm not interested in having the action interrupted so they can report the latest golf headlines. Or baseball stories either. When the storylines start taking the spotlight instead of the action on the field, we're not all that far from the WWE.
If she was watching the game, I wonder what Darrent's mother thought of Ms. Tafoya's gaffe? Intentional disrespect or no, it nonetheless could have caused more distress to those who still grieve. For that, ESPN should apologize. IMHO.

Agreed on both counts!
Rice's 'interview' lost all meaning when they were all giggly about crap that just doesnt matter
And peace be with the Williams family - that oversight was highly disrespectful. For god's sake you think ANY professional journalist covering todays NFL would know who the F Darrent WILLIAMS was!!!!!

Most pre-season games are bore-fests after the first series or two, the win doesn't count...there isn't any "drama" no real importance the booth announcers don't have the luxury of the on the field action to carry the broadcast hence all the "Fill In" chatter, Rice has also been promoting something for himself as well cause he is making the rounds on almost all the sports shows lately. Consider yourself lucky you got to see them on ESPN for all that went wrong there, when the local TV stations get to carry a game and you have to listen to a newsdesk guy who has never done play by play or color before butcher a game and you almost wish that Bryant Gumbel was calling it. Or how they really aren't prepared or capable of broadcasting a game the same way as NBC, CBS, FOX or ESPN is.
After it's all and done you have to look at preseason like a movie trailer, it's only a teaser of what's to come

DWill's death was tragic and horrible but you gotta understand outside of Denver not alot of people know who he is, Jerome Brown's death didn't generate much intreast here or Stacy Toran's. It's the same way about the Steriods thing with Bonds others are using and cheating but he's the one breaking records with the stuff, if a congressman cheats on his wife is it as big news as if the President cheated on his wife?
Since not alot has progressed on the case I'd imagine that the sideline reporter hadn't heard Darrent's name mentioned since a month or two after the crime had taken place.

Actually, I've watched all of the preseason games.... and yes, they can be boring, I suppose. But some rabid fans want to see which "bubble" players are likely to make the team and which ones are likely to be among the first round of roster cuts... and some of us have anticipated the first preseason game for literally months, so we want to see even the third- and fourth-stringers compete for the roster slots. :D
But if I want to watch/listen to chitchat... there are plenty of shows that just feature talk. When I've got the game on, I want to see football.

Its not too much to expect the people covering the game would have actually spent some time researching both teams and the news related?
"sorry to hear your mom died'
"umm...it was my dad"
"oops - my bad!"
"you get paid for this?!?"
Seems a bit harsh for a simple faux pas, doesn't it?
I would have corrected her, but I believe I would have done it gently and courteously.

Screw that if she didn't have tits she wouldn't have that job. If she can't get D Will's name right given the situation ESPN should get someone that can.
That's the point and if she were anything more than window dressing she would have gotten that right. Hugely unprofessional.

Having quit watching ESPN for a couple of years, I found the chatter to be quite annoying. I also watched the 1 hour pre-game show. Don't they normally do stories and interviews about the teams playing? Correct me if I'm wrong but I think they talked about the the Broncos/49ers maybe 3-4 times at the most.
Loser network!
ESPN has set up a great opportunity for a start up all sports network to grab huge market share right out of the box.

Yeah, they just don't cater to the rabid fans for anything anymore. I used to turn the volume down on the TV and turn the radio broadcast on for the play by play, Logan is more often than not better than whoever the network has in the booth.

The girl in the white pants isn't Bernstein. It's TV Azteca's (Mexico) Ines Sainz (roughly translated, She without panties). I know because I googled images of Bonnie the other day, too, harhar.

I'm shocked to hear people weren't enthralled with the 45 minute Jerry Rice cliché fest... most boring, drawn out, and lacking in content interview I've heard in ages.

I think he just wanted to let Rod know he didn't need too.
What about the chick calling Darrent Williams, "Darrent Smith"?
The Darrent Smith thing was pretty insulting. Maybe she thought Darrent was somehow related to Rod.

how? by offering coverage of the NHL and ML Soccer?
until one of the Big three (NFL, MLB, NBA) tells ESPN to **** off, there is no network big enough to challenge ESPN

Maybe I am being to harsh but that is a bad slip up when you are talking to a teammate of his and who was close to all involved.
I agree. The context made it seem very disrespectful. And I mean that in the old fashioned sense of the word.

About Rod...Shanahan said take all the time you need. I'm sure if Rod came back and wasn't productive enough in Mike's eyes, he'd send him on his way.....afterall, he didn't bat an eye dispatching Wilson when he became a liability due to injury.
exactly.
im not sure what this "he told him to leave" stuff is about.
all im hearing from shanny is "rod knows his body and no one will push harder than him."
it basically sounds to me like shanny trusts rod to make the right choice, and giving him that amount of trust makes me believe that he thinks rod can and will come back from this.
im sticking with my original prediction.
rod smith is opposite javon walker week one.

Holy crap they should have done more than just head shots when she did sideline reports. Man seeing her whole body of work would have made her all that much more credible...........

Shanahan gives the leeway needed, but, unlike the fans, Shanahan is not clouded by sentimentality....if Rod comes back and he cannot produce to the level Mike wants, I have no doubt he'll send him packing ala Wilson.
Here's hoping Rod has a couple of more seasons left in him in a Broncos uniform.

According to that reasoning, if Cutler throws an interception this season, he needs to find a new career . . .

Not even close, but you don't seem to understand. They made it an angle to talk about the Death of DWill and Nash. If Jay threw 4 or 5 INT's in a game then yes its on the same level. She was talking to a player very close to the situation. Its imperative she get his name right. I still contend that Rod would have had every right to stop her and correct her. I am sure he would have if he heard her right.

Absolutely... and if she's incapable of correctly remembering things like Darrent's name, then perhaps it's time for ESPN to provide her with a script and teleprompter.

I can easily see Rod on IR this year picking up a check ... that would be the best scenario.. He can help instruct and motivagte the younger guys .. still be part of the team and yet not take up a roster spot when it is clear now he wont be himself ( and an aging banged up self at that) until mid way through the season at best.
We need every able bodied WR we can field. I'd rather see Clark make the team than Rod come back too early just to have him on the 53. Rod can try again next year for a good swan song season as a valuable backup ... he is already ring of fame material anyway so his place in the Bronco pantheon is set.
Thanks Rod for the years of great play and the even better example!
