View Full Version : Chiefs fans and their loyalties ....

I don't know why more people don't notice or mention it, but Chiefs fans are not loyal to their players at all. At least the ones that i run into online ( Mostly Planet fans ).
There are 2 prime examples of it that really stick out to me.
1. PRIEST HOLMES :
Don't get me wrong, i really didn't like Holmes when he was the Chiefs primary starter at RB. He was good, he was a chief, and that little arm thing he always did when he was crossing the goal line all gave me reason to not like him.
What i don't understand is why don't Chief fans like him? I don't know how many of you visit the planet regularly (i do), but the fans there want no part of Priest and if you look through a few Priest-themed threads over there, you'd see that about 85% of the posters would like him to just leave and go away, they actually show resentment to him even trying to come back (even though their starting RB is holding out).
When Holmes got hurt they didn't even feel bad, they were actually just excited about what LJ could do with the extra carries. When he was spotted in a box seat eating nachos later that same season they reacted like he had come to the Chiefs game dressed up like the barrel man, and they still talk about that "incident" to this day.
Priest was their best RB ever up until LJ (and he hasn't done enough yet to surpass Priest yet). He was their version of TD and yet they were ever so eager to forget all about him. I wasn't joined on this board yet when TD was trying his final comeback and Clinton Portis was looking at getting a minimal amount of carries due to it, but did the Broncos fans here publicly wish that TD would just go away so Portis could get more time on the field?
2. TRENT GREEN
KC's best QB since Len Dawson ( I don't count Joe Montana in this argument, and his short stint there, but many Chiefs fans do ).
He gets that concussion and it took most Chiefs fans 2 or 3 weeks after his return to deem him ready for a permanent benching in favor of Damon Huard of all people.
The offseason hits and their fans cant wait to hear that he has been unloaded for a 4th or 5th round pick. He finally goes and not one tear is shed. This one is even worse because there is no LJ waiting in the wings at QB, just Croyle and Huard.
Anyone else notice that KC fans do this? Those 2 guys were their best QB/RB combo ever and all they got was a "don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way out" sendoff.
3: RYAN SIMS : just kidding
This is why Bronco fans are completely dominant in relation to Chiefs fans.
We have more lasting respect and appreciation for Sammy Winder than Chiefs fans do for Priest Holmes.

I think Chiefs fans bring in the same commitment to a player that the player brings to the organization. I will use Holmes first. The tone of this doesn't seem to be about the field. Nobody is doubting the contribution Priest Holmes made to this team on the field of play. But nobody is doubting the guy at every turn has been in it for himself. When he got injured he was a total ghost. He abandoned is teammates 22 months ago. And now he swoops in doing his routine where he talks but doesn't really say anything...the guy gives 110% for us on the field. And thats respected. You go into Kansas City and everyone still loves Priest Holmes. But he is all business...he is a runner for hire. Thats his deal thats how he has chosen to go about his work but you could see how that is not going to get you the undying support like a player like TD.
I could get into Green as well...besides all this I think you are going by the message board sports fan which IMO isn't a good indicator of how a fan base feels at all. If I drove 2 blocks over the the plaza right now and then 5 mins down broadway street to downtown I bet I would see both Holmes and Green jerseys...these are players that more casual fans really connected with.

I'd take that a step further and make the point that they weren't loyal to the team until Trent Green era. Where were the Chief fans before he showed up?
My definition of a loyal fan base is group of people who fill their stadium up year in year out. IE Broncos/Green Bay etc. The Chief fans to do not belong in this same catergory.
This is going to be a tough year for the Chief fan base. We'll see who's still loyal at the end of the season. I've read plenty of "I'm selling my season ticket threads at the planet over the years". We'll see plenty of them again this season.

I am only 23. But that stadium has been packed and loud and Chiefs football has been a big deal through many more QBs before Trent Green. You don't know what you are talking about.
Arrowhead has been selling out and has been one of the hardest places to play looong before Trent Green came along.

17 years is a long time to ride a bandwagon. I disagree with the word "majority" but there is no doubt Chiefs football as it is today was really established in 89. Carl Peterson for all he has done wrong put it together. I have no idea what the hell Jack Steadman was doing. At my age all I know is Arrowhead packed and the Chiefs being a huge deal all the time.
I will say this, because I a lot of people don't believe it...the Royals are so ****ty. Kansas City has a lot of baseball in its history. As much as football is king I think in its heart KC is a baseball town.
Aside from all that....I don't think football is going anywhere...you really have to reach into the bottom of the barrel if you have to go back that far to take shots at fans that are considered as among the leagues best for many years.
You know...a lot of us around here have only been Chiefs fans for 20 years...maybe its time to hop off that "bandwagon" and jump on to the Cowboys for a good 20.

Alright Zach, lets be honest here. First off, I realize that you are a good fan who would probably stick by the Chiefs through thick and thin and there are plenty more out there like you, but in all honesty here I don't think the Chiefs fanbase is really all that dedicated.
I grew up in a Chiefs family. My dad, his dad and most of their friends were all Chiefs fans. While my dad always supported and followed the Chiefs, his dad and alot of his friends would stop following the team and watching the games once they hit rough times.
Zach, can you honestly tell me that you think the Chiefs fans would still be "some of the best in football" if the Chiefs were constantly having losing seasons?

I also come from a family of Chef fans and I'll assure you, they don't lose hope and they're there year in and year out rooting for their team. Now, if they started having Raideresque type losing years where you weren't sure they were gonna win a game and next year could be even worse... then I wouldn't be so sure of their fanbase.

Holmes has his priorities straight though. His father did a tour of duty in Iraq. I don't see anything wrong with a guy spending his time with family in Texas with that circumstance. He wasn't very useful to the Chiefs being hurt and he made his family his top priority. Any fan who has a beef with Priest should give him a break.

I know it was not necessary (What % of the threads here really are?), but to me its interesting.
I don't read Dolphins fans complaining about Marino and all of those "wasted" years without a super bowl win, or Cowboys fans bemoaning the fact that Emmit was just in it for the record near the end.
I just think its interesting that the Chiefs fans i know (Planet, and there are a ******** of them over there) are so quick to throw dirt on the graves of their recent football heroes.
I don't know if you read the planet, but look at a few of those recent Priest Holmes threads, you'd think that it was Lin Elliot or Elvis Grbac showing up to camp from the way he's talked about over there.
Same goes with Trent Green, and even Dante Hall to a lesser extent. Weren't these guys football gods in KC as recent as 2 years ago?

Message board culture. You should know that.
Aside from all that, can we put to bed all of this "Chiefs fans are happy with their season if they beat the Broncos."
There have been a lot of other people posting this silliness lately.
Easy, would you characterize Chiefs fans has people that are happy with how the last few seasons have gone.

Look on the Chiefs official website. Two game package for the Packers and Bronco's games. Trying to get Bronco fans to buy the package and sell the Packer tickets to Packer fans. Please visiting team; bring your fans so we can pretend we sellout every game with loyal Chief fans. I never had a problem picking up a ticket in the lot for face or less. They would rather eat BBQ and then return to the trailer park than watch the game.

Message board culture. You should know that.
So you do see it too?
I don't think you really contribute to that, but i don't think its the norm around the NFL message board landscape.
Redskins fans do it with Bailey, but thats a lot more understandable.
All i know is its much easier to find "good" posts about Mike Vick on a Falcons board then it is to find "good" posts about Trent Green on a Chiefs board.
Just interesting, and i'll eat my words when the day comes that i sign in here and see a bunch of threads talking bad about Steve Atwater, Rod Smith, TD, and John Elway.

Oh, I see it. But I think you are taking it a bit far...there are a lot of supporters of Trent Green. Also, it is a bit of a unique situation...the contract\negotiation\trade fiasco got a little ugly and that pissed some people off. I think the negative people always shout louder than supporters. Like I said message board culture. The names you listed above left Denver on non controversial terms Rod aside.
My main point is that the type of people that post on message boards (obviously not EVERYONE) and call in to sports talk shows etc. are not a very good barometer of a fan base.

Why is it wrong? These players aren't slaves. It's just like anything else. It is a business. No one should say, "wow, that is an outrageous amount, thats more than I will ever make, that is more than enough for him, he should get his ass in there and play". It's not about "enough for him", its about what you can get. This is just like anything else, a business. They shouldnt be ridiculed for doing what is in their interest, that is the only thing they should consider, just as the teams are very coldhearted when they go about making decisions about players, its about efficiency on their end as well, which is good.

I couldn't disagree more. Of the thousands of Broncos fans I've met while tailgating it's the messageboard members that are the true pulse of BroncosMania IMO. There are many great fans who go to the games on a weekly basis but I think it's easy for them to take that access for granted. It's the guy that lives a thousand miles a way that maybe goes to one game a year or who has never been to a game that is really passionate for the team so much as to spend ALL year dreaming for that camp report. That is a fan IMO.
Zach don't get me wrong I don't lump you into that fair weather fan category or even bandwagon bunch of 89. The reality is Arrowhead was a ghost town before then while Denver has been packing the house for several decades running.

Ha, I am a freelance photographer in a saturated market...I just do not have money to be betting on anything at this stage of my life. I can't predict the future but I believe you will have to play great football to beat this Chiefs team this coming year. As time has gone on these past few months I have found the offense won't be as good as I hoped but the defense will be better...maybe MUCH better than I first thought...thats the fun of sports. Time will tell.
Aside from that...
I do not doubt the many MANY great fans that come from places like OM and CP. But if you look around the people you are describing are getting less and less. These people are being replaced with the fan that wants a player to be cut every time they make a mistake, the team to sign every FA that is ever released, and the person that quite frankly doesn't know football and likes to hear themselves b**** and moan. I think these places lack perspective. Thats not a team thing its the nature of the medium. I think someone that comes out to things and meets people in person is a pretty good lithmus test....rarely are the internet tough guy chicken littles the types that will do anything not behind their keyboard.
The validation part seems a bit silly to me. I love talking football and mixing it up with people. All in good fun. Nothing more nothing left.

What kind of bridge burning?
Trent not wanting a huge paycut and the indignity of backing up Damon Huard and Napoleon Dynamite?
Priest getting seriously hurt and being spotted eating Nachos in a luxury box during the game? Or admitting that he has an interest in money?
Priest makes those money comments and Chiefs fans are totally disgusted with him. LJ is holding out for Tomlinson money and thats just dandy. At least Priest is at training camp trying to work for it.
BTW, I do think LJ is definitely underpaid and is also a little bit older than most people think ( Hes only gonna get one mega contract ), but i wasn't as offended as most fans in the KC area that Priest went on record as being interested in making some money.
I do wish LJ luck on his holdout. In fact, i hope its the longest one in NFL history.

I might have missed some threads, but i think Portis only took a hit from us with the dogfighting comments, when we would get an occasional skins fan riling some people up, and if i recall an article during his 1st preseason in DC that he made a few disparaging comments about Denver.
I know that the "Flava Clown" stuff has popped up here and there, but in all fairness he was doing interviews in Halloween costumes.
BTW, those skins fans don't really come around much anymore.
I personally only have fond memories of Portis in a Broncos uniform, and i would be willing to bet that if he would have never left if he had it all over to do again.

Seems to me a lot of times he is mentioned in the stat lines and is on the scoreboard. Responsible for catches, yards, first downs, points. That sorta thing. You can't print those in the program real time.

I'm not saying i like(d) Trint , Im just saying that he went from having a Len Dawson to a Steve Bono legacy awfully quick amongst Chief fans.
I ( i think i speak for many bronco-NFL fans ) think that EK is pretty a pretty ordinary WR and that Trent Green / Vermeil were mostly responsible for him having above average stats.
With a full season of Herm-ball and either Huard/Dynamite throwing the ball to him (even 4 or 5 years ago when he was younger) would have resulted in a lot of 40-45 catch - 700 yard seasons.
Obviously just my opinion.

Where this thread has gone is what im talking about. Bronco fans can spew venom at some former players ( Kennison, Gardener, and Griese being 3 examples ), but those guys generally busted for us ( Or Quit on us, as the case may be ).
I just can't help but notice that Chiefs fans are more likely to hate on someone who is arguably their best-ever QB and another who is probably their best-ever RB.
The Portis thing is up for debate, but to be honest thats a guy that held out and wanted out after just a couple of good years with the organization. Most of us are generally happy with how that played out though.

Did you read through the threads or just the titles?
Plenty of posters made clear that they liked both Portis and Champ.
2 of those thread links are to the same thread.
One of them was started by a almost certainly fictional "Redskins/Broncos" fan and was a thread intended to bait. He had 4 posts total and started out with calling Champ "Overrated", which no real bronco fans ever do.
Portis is different anyway, because he held out for more money (like LJ) and after he was traded took a few parting shots at Denver fans and the city. 2 guys were traded in the primes of their careers with that deal, so you are obviously gonna have Skins fans here baiting and vice versa. That kind of trade becomes a competition between fanbases.
T. Green basically held his tongue even though his trade got delayed forever and Priest never left.
Neither one of them has badmouthed KC fans or the city, unless i've missed something.
The Trent trade has been summed up as "he'll get to the playing time minimums and they'll still suck enough to turn it into a decent 4th rounder"
If we were at the planet right now and i wanted to make a thread with examples for the Priest/Trent hate, i could have 20 thread links posted.
I could probably have 3 or 4 "Nachos" threads linked up.

Most of the accusations being thrown at Chiefs fans in this thread are probably true...
of ANY fanbase, save the Packers.
Put up a couple 3 win season in a row and see how quickly your season ticket holder list dwindles. It's not necessarily an epidemic owned by Chiefs fans, but by American society in general. The only reason Green Bay fans are an exception is because there really is not much do do up in that neck of the woods. In fact, you could remove every single deer from Wisconsin and you'd still have guys putting on their orange and heading out to look for 'em.

Pryce was supposed to be the backbone and focal point of the Broncos defensive line, and he couldnt do it. His attitude for football was not right, if you need to motivate a 30+ year old to play a game, then its a reflection of the player, and not the team. He played when he wanted to, which was usually against KC. I am happy for Trevor in Baltimore, good luck buddy.

I disagree at least on season ticket sales. Both Denver and KC won't miss a beat selling those out even with subpar seasons. They have built too much of a fan base. Now the Chargers who have such a diverse community around them and other cities that might be the fact.
