GonzoLays is obviously gone. His last post was on 7/25 - anyone know if he's coming back?

freak6 hasn't posted since the 24th. Is he out of here, or did he just crawl into a hole somewhere for awhile?

The smell is slowly dissipating around here.

Anyone else that's MIA?

I believe freak is serving a 60-day ban. I have no idea about Gonzo. You'll have to ask TJ.

TJ reduced freak6's ban from 60 to 30 days last week ... a nice gesture seeing the time of year. I am conflicted about freak - he's a loose cannon for sure, but I think he's active military. Besides, I agree with most of his political viewpoints. :kiddingme

Gonzo I haven't heard anything about, but he sometimes drops away for a couple weeks all on his own.

Slap is actually posting a pretty fair amount, but for some reason - only in threads I don't frequent ::)

Clockwork Orange hasn't posted in a couple months - a big loss for the board imo, but it's his call.

Tredici hasn't posted either, but her profile shows she's visiting. You pointed out somewhere Roh that she's busy with volunteer work.

On the bright side, I just noticed LABF is back after a couple weeks away ^5 :sunshine:

Active military or not, he's a douchebag. There's not a more annoying poster on the site, in my opinion.

Gonzo I haven't heard anything about, but he sometimes drops away for a couple weeks all on his own.

For some reason, Gonzo has never bugged me as much as some others. I guess it's because I see him as clearly just trying to annoy people with some of his ridiculousness. I would rather have that than someone who is genuinely ignorant (see freak6). Don't get me wrong. I'm not ready to nominate either of them for a Nobel Peace Prize. It's like saying, "What would you rather have? The stomach flu, or a kidney stone?" I've had both, and I guess I would have to say I'd rather have the stomach flu.

Slap is actually posting a pretty fair amount, but for some reason - only in threads I don't frequent ::)

I don't see much of him. The few posts I've seen seem to be pretty vitriolic. Slap, my friend, it's time to move on with your life. Life is too short to be so pissy.

Clockwork Orange hasn't posted in a couple months - a big loss for the board imo, but it's his call.

I agree - a big loss. I miss his Rockies input these days.

Tredici hasn't posted either, but her profile shows she's visiting. You pointed out somewhere Roh that she's busy with volunteer work.

Hopefully, she comes back once football starts up in earnest. I don't see that she has any reason to stay away, with all that's transpired over the past month or so.

On the bright side, I just noticed LABF is back after a couple weeks away ^5 :sunshine:

Well, I guess I have trouble seeing that as "the bright side." I don't have any trouble being friends with someone who is philosophically different than I. What I don't like about LABF is that I don't believe he really thinks for himself (just my opinion). He's good at cutting and pasting (literally, in some cases; figuratively, in others) - that's about it. I like people who take an issue, think it through, and make decisions based on what they believe. For an ordinary person, what they believe might put them on the right side of an issue in some cases, and the left side of an issue in others. Most people lean more one way than the other, and so they label themselves liberal or conservative. It's almost if LABF lives by a manual of what he's supposed to believe. He's the political version of a company man - the guy that totes the company line, whether or not it's fair (sort of Dwight Shrute-ish). To me, it's like listening to Rush Limbaugh. When I am flipping through the radio stations in my car, there is nothing (and I mean nothing!) that will get me to switch it faster than the sound of Rush Limbaugh's voice. I cannot stand the man. LABF is the southpaw version of Rush Limbaugh. :alghh:

And since this post is already eternal, I'll add one more thing. I am almost convinced that there are guys like LABF that are low level employees of the Democratic National Party. They are paid to find ways to spew propaganda on messageboards on the Internet. I just see them popping up everywhere, and they are almost like robots. I got into an interesting discussion with one the other day on the Salt Lake Tribune site. It was bizarre. It was after an article about the trapped miners here. Some guy starts in about how the president has ruined the country. I replied that every problem in the world isn't caused by a bone-headed president; that there were problems before the bone-headed president. He immediately jumps on my for supporting the war (huh?). I said I didn't support the war, and he says something, if I remember correctly, about me being homophobic (again, huh?). It was like a robot that had been programmed to find a conservative, and attack based on conservative stereotypes. Truly bizarre.

He went off on angry insulting rants in a political thread ... with Taco John and SoCal of all people. As I recall, he was warned.

I have a soft spot for freak though, because I think people and politicians should be MORE ANGRY at Bush/Cheney, not less. And freak definitely does fill that niche :~ohyah!:

I have mixed feelings about Freak. On one hand I'm sure he's probably a decent guy, but his know it all attitude and the way he tries to belittle everyone who disagrees with him gets really damn annoying. That, and he goes really far out of his way to stir the pot.

Do a search for "mormon" under his username and you'll see all you need to be able to understand why I don't care for freak. I don't get into discussing religion. I especially don't get into discussing it with someone whose sole intent is to offend. On top of that, I get barraged with (unreturned) PMs, basically mocking my faith. Not cool. Not cool at all.

I guess I see a person's faith as undebatable. On top of that, in my book, it's off-limits unless advice is solicited.

There certainly seems to be, in my experience, a pretty fair number of people who have deep, deep hostility toward Mormons. I've met several people who seem preoccupied by it, and it's practically all they wanna talk about. There are tons of anti-Mormon books too.

Personally, I was raised Catholic, and I freely acknowledge the Church has done pretty rotten things throughout history ... and a pretty fair number of both lapsed and observant Catholics seem very troubled indeed.

On the other hand, I've been in Provo twice as a reporter, I've twice visited the Mormon Polynesian Cultural Center on the north side of Oahu, and have met and encounted several Mormons elsewhere in my life - including here on the Mane. On the whole, they seem to me to have a special kind of 'aura' about them for lack of a better word. There's a 'cleanliness' to them (again, metaphorical and for lack of a better word.) Even that guy on Jeopardy seem to have something special.

Can't say I'm ready to convert (I love coffee too much), but there is something there.

Yeah, I wasn't too keen on it - especially since it was completely unprovoked. It's happened a few times, but the last one was in a thread started by BMF, soliciting advice about a potential move to Utah. The Mormon thing only came up in the context of, "One thing you have to keep in mind is living in a place where there is such a predominant culture." freak jumps in about how all Mormons are "insane idiots," and starts down this truly bizarre path about Jay Cutler being a God and Dominik Hixon being an angel (or something to that effect). It went on and on and on, and you could tell he was really putting some thought into it. Finally, everyone just started ignoring him, so he started sending out PMs (not sure if Khan or O4L got any). We're talking lots and lots of PMs.

Nothing bugs me here more than the rare incidents of religious intolerance. And then he started in on how he had near superhuman strength and intelligence. I didn't want anything to do with someone who has near superhuman strength and intelligence! :)

Oh, this thread is funny!

Yes it is.

I've always been a country music fan but since I moved away from the city I've adopted a new motto in life.

This guy sums it up nicely. I can't tell you how many people I've written off or stopped helping who've wasted my time and energy. Not anymore.

To those people I say.........

"You do your thing I'll do mine" It's a great way to live!

Artist/Band: Montgomery Gentry
Lyrics for Song: You Do Your Thing

Put me on a mountain, way back in the backwoods
Put me on a lake with biggin on the line
Put me 'round a campfire cookin' something I just cleaned
You do your thing, I'll do mine

I ain't tradin' in my family's safety
Just to save a little gas
And I'll pray to God any place, any time
And you can bet I'll pick up the phone if Uncle Sam calls me up
You do your thing, I'll do mine

Hey, I'll worry about me
You just worry about you
And I'll believe what I believe
And you can believe what you believe too

I ain't gonna spare the rod
Cuz that ain't what my daddy did
And I sure know the difference between wrong and right
You know, to me it's all just common sense
A broken rule, a consequence
You do your thing, I'll do mine

Hey, I'll worry about me
You just worry about you
And I'll believe what I believe
And you can believe what you believe too

I'm gonna keep on working hard
Make my money the old-fashioned way
I don't wanna piece of someone else's pie
I don't wanna piece of nobody else's pie
If I don't get my fill on life I ain't gonna blame no one but me
You do your thing, I'll do mine

You ain't gonna be my judge
Cuz my judge will judge us all one day
You do your thing, I'll do mine

Marines normally don't get soft assignments in Iraq so I tend to cut him slack. I don't know if he's on his second or third time out here. Normally Marines are kind of nuts and have strong loves and hates. Most of the time it's not rational but it's something peculiar to themselves. I think it's amazing that Mock can say all manner of foul thing and be totally adulated but Freak other posters get castigated. I guess I haven't been around nice people all my life so some things I just take with a grain of salt. We have some solid church going Christians who do not realize how bad some of things are they say but because it's not popularly know they get overlooked because they can quote scripture and don't say anything of substance. Okay, I am basically going to respond to myself here.

I actually like LABF, for the most part (I'm sure he'll sleep better tonight). I like that he's passionate (even though sometimes I wonder if he is an employee of the DNC ;) ). I just don't know anyone who doesn't cross lines occasionally when it comes to politics - if they are being honest. I generally vote Republican - especially as I get older. But I can look at a guy like Obama and be pretty intrigued by him. What makes others label him as naive is what I find refreshing about him. I don't think he's a cliche, and I believe he's genuine in the things he professes to believe. And maybe we need someone willing to "reinvent the wheel" a little, at this point. I'm not sure I could vote for him, but I'm not sure I couldn't.

Actually, I doubt I could vote for him. I could vote for a Democrat, though. I never approach an election saying, "I don't care who the Republicans throw out there. It'll be better than the alternative."

And that's just my point. I don't want to read about the left or right pat answer to every issue. I am interested in real opinions. I am open-minded in the belief that neither side has all the right answers. Philosophically, I lean right; but as I have said before, I am just as turned off by the right-wing crazy as I am the left-wing crazy.

That said, I think LABF is a pretty decent guy. I should have never mentioned him in the same context as a guy like freak6, and I apologize for that.

So isnt this a part of the board that one can find some sanity? Lets leave politics at the door -- there is a whole sludge-full of that crap elsewhere...

Yeah, I agree. I just got thinking about the way I sounded with some posts about LABF, and I figured I should clarify. They sounded far more caustic than I intended.

Not that it probably matters to LABF. But it matters to me.

I would just like to mention that I hate that movie. I don't know why. Just that Jimmy Stewart was so ... whiney.

DEFINITELY one of the greatest movies of all-time.

Thanks for the diplomacy.

As for the "DNC employee" thing, I told the Democratic Party to take me off its mailing list and to pound sand about two years ago. I know you don't spend a lot of time on the WRP forum, so I understand if you missed this.

I'm pretty disgusted and disenchanted with the Democratic Party right now for reasons that are probably obvious, and, at present, I'm apt to sit the '08 presidential election out (unless Gore runs.)

As for the whole liberal/conservative continuum you addressed, my positions on some issues could probably be construed by some as 'conservative.' For example, I'm against the legalization of marijuana and other mind-altering drugs, I'm against any form of amnesty or sweetheart deals for illegal immigrants, (in fact, I agree with Pat Buchanan's ideas re: a moritorium on immigration) and I'm generally pro-law enforcement and pro-military.

I strongly agree with Ron Paul's positions on about 40% of the major issues of concern to Americans (but strongly disagree on the other 60%.)

Hope this clarifies things a bit more.
