The A-Train may have made his last run.

Bucs fullback Mike Alstott, arguably the most popular player in franchise history, is expected to announce his retirement later today.

""We'll have an announcement regarding him later today,'' coach Jon Gruden said after the walk-through Thursday.

A press conference with Alstott and general manager Bruce Allen will be held at the team's facility at 2 p.m.

Alstott, 33, has been absent for the past three days from training camp in Lake Buena Vista. Coaches have said he had a 'sore body' and needed some rest. He was not expected to play in Friday's preseason opener against the New England Patriots.

But his retirement is not expected to be injury-related, although Alstott has complained recently of a sore neck. He had surgery to replace a vertebrae in his neck in 2003.

The Bucs signed Jets free agent fullback B.J. Askew and apparently intend to make him the starter.

He was a warrior who took a ton of punishment. Good luck to him.

He will always be one of my all time favorite players. He took the less than glamorous position of FB and excelled at it. He was one of those guys who would throw himself completely into the play to make it work. I couldn't believe he came back from the neck surgery.

I hope he has a healthy life. The beating he took was legendary.

He'll probably still get elected to the pro bowl this year

The NFL should conduct a study on pro-bowl voting. They should without announcement just insert names of former players who were popular. It would be interesting to see how that made out.

The beating he dished out was more so....Good luck to him--he was a sight to see in his prime.

It's already been done. Jeremy Shockey made it the other year and he played in only a few games due to injury.

Sad to see him go. When I first moved to Florida, he would come into the Village Inn where I worked at. He's a very soft spoken man, and was always friendly with us.

One of my favorite non Bronco players. Never really used to his strengths I think, but very fun to watch when they gave him the ball.

I always liked him. I remember seeing an article in SI about athlete's reaction times and stuff like that, and there was a shot of Alstott getting his helmet ripped off by the facemask and his eyes were wide open with fingers right in his face. It was displaying the great concentration it takes to reject the involuntary reaction to close your eyes. He was a hoss.
