Finally, Some Time Off…
It’s been a boring week. I guess not really boring, boring’s not the word. It’s like Groundhog Day, if anybody remembers that movie. Every day is the same.
We’ve been very fortunate. We have a veteran team, and coach recognizes that. When we work hard he gives us ample time off, so I would say this is a “smart” camp. Really productive, and at the same time we’re not pounding each other into the ground.
But when we go out there it’s full speed, so the fans who are here get to see that it’s a lot of contact, a lot of action, and everybody’s going full speed. And when we do that we get some time off.
I think it was last Thursday — like I said it’s Groundhog Day, they all run together — but we had a really good practice in the morning, really fast, really aggressive defensively. In the secondary I think we had one of our best days yet on that day and we got the evening off, which it’s amazing how just a little bit of free time how excited we get for that. You would have thought that it was the greatest thing that could ever happen to us. We got the time off and we all ran out of here as fast as we could.
I just tried to catch up on people who I haven’t been seeing in a while. I went to the chiropractor to make sure everything was aligned and get stretched out and stuff. And then I went and had something to eat with my family, my parents.
Then I went down to the Boys and Girls Club for about two hours and just hung out with the kids because I hadn’t seen them in a while. About a year ago, if you would have asked me, I would have said I really don’t like kids. But I’ve really grown to love a lot of the kids at the Boys and Girls Club. I missed them. I felt like it was something that I had to do, so my dog Cash — a big English bulldog — and I went down there, and the kids know him because he’s been there a while and we had a good time with all of them.
And then the next day was back to Groundhog Day. And I commented on the food last week and I think the catering staff might have taken it to heart, because they definitely stepped their game up.
We had a really delicious Chinese food day. We had some veggie egg rolls and some chicken skewers, I really enjoyed that. I hope they bring that back. And the cinnamon buns — those are awesome. I hope they bring all that back.
And then, more of the same. Practice, meetings, meetings, practice. That’s just what happened all week.
But Saturday was a big day, because a lot of the fans came out and it was another afternoon off. So a lot of the fans came out, we got some live goal-line action, which I’m sure the fans really enjoyed. And again, the defense has done really well, and I think we’re starting to get everything together with the front seven and the run game. I think Saturday was one of our best days up front defensively.
Sorry that I don’t give much offense perspective, but you’ll have to get an offensive player to do a blog to get all that. As far as I’m concerned, defense is the most important thing. And for a lot of the fans that support the defense, I do appreciate that in the blog. I do read all the comments every week.
Also Saturday, some of the kids from my writing class at the Boys and Girls Club returned the favor and came to watch practice and visited me. They brought a stuffed English bulldog, so they gave that to me at the end of practice. So I’m walking into the locker room with a stuffed animal, so all my friends were giving me a hard time, but I didn’t care. I appreciated it. It was real thoughtful.
After that, I went out to lunch with them. They hung around and we had lunch at Old Chicago up the street. And like I said, I’ve grown pretty fond of them and I missed them, and it was nice to see them and see them all getting ready for school and stuff. It’s exciting.
Also on Saturday my cousin had a softball tournament, so I went and checked him out a little bit. I got him an internship with CollegeInColorado.org. It’s a non-profit that I’m a spokesperson for, so he’s been interning there all summer and he’s going to be going back to school in Maryland in a couple weeks, so they had a little end-of-the-summer softball tournament.
They did pretty well. They were fifth, and it’s a lot of state organizations in there, so there were a lot of teams, and they ended up around fifth place.
They were competitive, which I really appreciate. Earlier in the season I went to one of their softball games and they were just easy-does-it and out there to have a good time. It’s nice to have a good time, but winning is a good time as far as I’m concerned. And my name is attached to that organization so I like them to put out a quality product. So they did a lot better than they did earlier in the season.
And the big highlight from Saturday was being able to get back to supporting the Broncos hockey team, which I hadn’t been able to do since camp started. They got a big road win against the Chiefs, which is always good when the Broncos can beat the Chiefs on the road. So it was really exciting to see. It was a close game. I think one of the players actually had a hat trick.
A bunch of the players and I went out to have dinner that night at a restaurant downtown, as if we don’t see enough of each other. But we really do like each other, which is cool to be where it’s not just a job where you come into your office, do what you have to do and go home. I think whether we all worked here or if we all worked around the city we’d still seek out each other and hang out.
So we had a great time downtown, and it’s pretty fun to get to go out with the guys. I think
It was like Jay, Champ, Dre’, myself, B-Marsh was there, D.J. and Veal. Just a lot of really fun guys and we had a good time.
It’s fun to be out watching the fans get all excited. With guys like Jay and Champ, it’s fun to just hang in the background and then they say, “So who are you?”
Generally whenever I’m out with Champ, one of my good friends, I just say I’m his cousin, and most of the time that gets me more respect than saying I’m Domonique Foxworth, which is pretty hilarious. But the longer I’ve been here the more I get recognized.
So we just had a good time, hanging out, eating, making fun of each other. That’s all we pretty much do is just make fun, and I guess that’s one of the things that proves we’re really good friends and that we really like each other, because it hasn’t yet escalated into anything more than some laughs.
For example, Dre’ Bly doesn’t miss anything because he has huge ears and he hears everything. That’s going to be on the blog, I can’t wait. Can’t keep any secrets from Dre’ because those ears catch everything.
But I just want to thank all the people from the blog for responding. Like I said, I really enjoy all the responses. I read them every week. 36 comments? I think that’s a new record, so hopefully we can beat 36.
Good luck to TerpsFan and his triathlon, something I could never do and would never think about doing.
And thanks to all the blog people who showed up at practice and yelled at me. I was able to meet a couple people and put some faces with the names, or the screen names or whatever they are. But I really appreciate it. It’s not something that I do just because they ask me to, it’s something that’s kind of fun.
Oh, I almost forgot. The rematch of the bowling challenge is this evening. We’re going back at it. Like I said last time, if you’re too good at bowling that means you’re not that good at your real job. So we lost last time, but we’re going to try to come back as a defense and win it this time, and I’ll let everybody know who wins next Tuesday.
Anyway, thanks a lot. I’ll talk to you in a week.
