#5: Denver Broncos (http://www.armchairgm.com/index.php?title=Denver_Broncos)

Quick Facts

Color Scheme: 10
Helmets: 8
Flashiness/Sharpness: 9
Tradition: 9
Overall: 36
Final Thoughts: The guys in Denver may have some of the best all-around uniforms in the NFL. They aren't the top in tradition of flashiness but they score well in multiple categories. If the Broncos sucess continues they could even score higher on the charts

The new uniforms still suck....and I don't care what we've won in them.

Tradition is based upon flashiness and success eh? That's a laugh ::)

Bring back the old D logo and the orange.....that's tradition!!

Viva the Old School!!

They have four of the ugliest uniforms I've ever seen in the top 4. That's one crappy list. (IMO)

They should have used a different font for the numerals on the new Donk uniforms IMO. They went too far away from the old school "scoreboard" font to something that looks like the friggin Glasgow Rangers.

Teams are doing that so it's harder for people to create cheap, affordable knockoffs....gotta keep affordability as far away from the public as possible you know.

I hate the arena looking stuff with a passion.

Tradition = 9 for us ???

Me thinks looking at this entire list that was just a big joke.

I still strongly F@#%^*#@ dislike our new untraditional uniforms!!!!!!!

Thank you Bowlen for trading in our beloved orange crush jerseys and replaced it with nike-hee-haw suspenders! Not one of your better ideas.

I am starting to like our road jerseys more than the home, maybe because of the blue pants they wore so much last year. I wish for the throwback days myself.

I saw the Chargers new uni's in action, they are not as cool as the powder blue but I like them, the font looks dorky though.

I was getting ready to make this very post. Their top four could easily be my bottom four. In fact, the Dolphins may well have the worst uni's in the league. Teal? Are you kidding me?

Let this list be a message to Bronco fans. The most confused uniform rater in the history of uniform rating just put Denver at #5.

Yeah maybe the Dolphins could change their unis to black or navy blue.

Or maybe super duper duper dark navy blue.

That would be cool. Yeah, let's have 16 teams wear black and 16 more wear navy blue; that would be cool.

Then the Dolphins, the team with the best winning percentage in the NFL since the AFL NFL merger, would have tough intimidating uniforms. I mean screw the color that has the best win % over the last 37 years, let's make em look tough.

Because ya know, grown men who have played a sport their entire lives are intimidated by uniform colors right?

Any one of you that wouldnt is a bona fide bandwagon bitch.

Funny how that would work out. Id be wearing pink and you'd be the bitch. ;D Anyway, I got Denver as the coolest uni's on my list and the Chiefs, Raiders and Chargers tied for 2 billionth just behind Trinidad & Tobago Lady Jellyfish Hunting Professionals.

I thought the blue and green were classic pacific northwest colors. Now, it's a metallic melange of boring greenishblueishness...

I don't think the chicken head needed a makeover either. The traditional tribal looking graphic was cool. The scary looking chicken head thing really does nothing for me.

I know we have terrible luck in them, and we'll probably never see them again, but I do like our Orange jerseys with the recent uniform...face it, orange is our color, somehow it should be dominant again...but no complaints. You have to admit, as soon as we made our change, every team in the country whether it was college, high school or even pros seem to somehow emulate (Nike's) design...

Regarding the all blue ensemble, it makes us look like the fat chick in Willy Wonka when she eats that blueberry thing...

Best uni's in the league, umm..tough, I don't like the recent designs for the following:

New Falcons unis: horrible, too busy

Buffalo Bills: looks like a CFL uniform

Seahawks: what color is that?, did they mix colors with whites when they did the wash?

Chargers: the white helmets are cool..I have to admit

Cardinals: gotta admit, I kinda like 'em...

Vikings: what the hell is going on there?...change that horn logo, it should be their Viking guy on the side of their helmets

aahhhh the old uniform debate. i like both old and new broncos uniforms. i do have an affinity for the current ones seeing as how we hoisted the lombardi with them.
as for old vs. new, what, so the orange helmet with the cartoon horse was better than the blue "D" helmet because its even more "classic"? and which blue helmet uniform was better? dark blue with the almost red '70s uniform? or the light blue helmet orange jersey '80s uniform?
in 20 years or so probably-less, when when we change again i can hear all the "old timers" dercy the demise of the horsehesd uni.
at least we dont change every 3-4 years like the nuggets. who i think finally have a decent uniform since the '80s.
lastly i think the raiders logo looks old and decrepit and stuck in the '60s just like al davis himself. if i was a raiders fan i wish i could have a good pirate flag like the bucs.

Nobody has mentioned the Browns. I kinda like there Uniforms, not the orange one but the brown jersey and white jersey.

My favourites not in any order

Jets (classic green and white)
Colts (classic blue and white
Cowboys (tradition, simple)
Raiders (I hate writing this)
Broncos (old school too, not crazy on D helmet)
Browns (come on, Brown, colour of dirt, and ****)
Saints (like the colours)
Texans (for a new team not bad)
Cardinals (hey they haven't had tradition since WW2 but they look good)
49ers (glad they moved away from the black)

Worst list

Miami (teal, Aqua whatever they're gross)
Steelers (go logo on both sides or none)
Seahawks (WTF)
Alouttes I mean Bills (they should go old school 70's)
Vikings (not crazy on new uniforms)
bengals (new uniforms suck)
Jacksonville (tired of Black)
Carolina
Rams (like the old one better)
Eagles (looks like a bunch of eagles **** on there helmet) like 80's Reggie white uni better

I've seen several Bronco uniforms. I have to say, even though it will put me in a tiny minority, I am a big fan of the new uniform, swoosh and all. I liked them from the very start and I think they are one of the classiest uniforms in the league.

Traditional?... nope, not even maybe. There is nothing traditional about the new uniform, but I don't care, I love them anyway.

The old orange uniform? Although I think it's a great color of orange, the orange uniforms were ugly, ugly, ugly, and it's no wonder that we have lost all the recent games we played in them. (They lost many of their games back then, too, but I never realized it was the orange uniform. I always thought it was Steve Tensi).

I never saw the guys wearing the striped socks, but they sure matched the orange uniform.

Heck, we now have a strong tradition of winning, and that's the kind of tradition I can support. The old loser orange uni can go.

Orange
Yellow
Green
Blue
Indigo/Violet = Purple same ****

Anyway the complimentary colors I thought were

Red-Purple
Orange Blue
Yellow Green

Maybe on a straight spectrum, but the color wheel is a spectrum bent into a circle. The colors side-by-side are analogous. The opposites are complementary.

Complementary color scheme
Complementary colors are colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel, such as blue and orange, red and green, purple and yellow. These colors, when used side-by-side, make each other appear brighter. When they are mixed, they neutralize each other.

Rams at #1 is silly, Rams in the top 10 is silly. Personally, I like their old unies better.
I agree ... the old Rams unis were much better. That darker blue, with the darker gold, in the darker dome is just plain depressing.

This is all a matter of opinion of course, and everybody has one, but I've seen a few times where top fashion designers rank all the uniforms in all major sports, and they almost uniformly choose the Jaguars #1. Gotta admit, the teal plus gold with black borders is awesome ... and the Jaguar logo that blends into the black helmet is really terrific. It's just wrong these guys omitted Jacksonville altogether.

In college sports, I'm kinda partial to Florida State when they use that dark red more - like for their pants. And Ohio State had great uniforms before they minimized the silver a couple years ago.

Another uni that ALWAYS catches my eye is the Cleveland Browns, with Brown jersey over orange pants. They very, very rarely wear that combo though.

Speaking of "learning," my MySpace friend Jana, here is some info on the morbid march of changing NFL uniforms, until every teams has either NAVY or BLACK. This was like the first thread I ever started here almost two years ago:

_______

This thread BEMOANS the EROSION of NFL uniforms! Ever since 1994 when the NFL lifted the 2-color max rule (Panthers and Jaguars 3-color expansion - plus the 49ers added black and the Pats silver). Now almost everybody has either BLACK or NAVY, NAVY or BLACK. I certainly understand that the bigshots at NFL Properties want to sell as much gear as possible, but this is ridiculous! Only the COLTS and GIANTS have a simple blue as their dominant color now. In fact, here's a list of teams who've dumped Royal or Powder in favor of Navy in the past 10-12 years (or a lot less regular less blue in favor of navy - like the Bills):
1. Broncos
2. Rams
3. Chargers
4. Seahawks
5. Patriots
6. Bills (some blue left)
7. Oilers/Titans (some lite blue left)
8. Cowboys (but they always had 2 blues)
9. Texans (expanded w/ navy)

That's almost 1/3 of the league. And HERE'S a list of teams that have added BLACK in the last 10 years:
1. Eagles
2. Lions
3. Cardinals
4. Panthers (expansion)
5. Jaguars (expansion)
6. 49ers
7. Buccaneers

And now, black is creeping into the DOLPHINS and JETS uniforms. Any year now, I'm betting even the CHEFS add black highlights!

Memories . . . All of these classic uniforms have been junked this last decade for either NAVY or BLACK:

The Cowboys dark jersey is pretty cool, they rarely wear it. I like the old Bills uni's with the white helmets and lighter blue. The Lions throwbacks are cool as well. The 80's 9er's uni's are classic as well their new ones look putrid to me.

Memories . . . All of these classic uniforms have been junked this last decade for either NAVY or BLACK:

http://img467.imageshack.us/img467/7514/unis19hh.jpg
http://img467.imageshack.us/img467/8630/unis29rt.jpg

Maybe its just me, but most of those uniforms are ugly.

Exceptions were San Diego and Dallas, and I suppose Denver even though Im not particularly fond of the predominantly orange. I do wish we would have kept the royal blue as our main color with orange highlights. That might have been cool.

Yes, sometimes NAVY and BLACK are better, and the Cowboys rarely-used Navy jerseys are better looking than their older royal blue jerseys, also rarely used.

AP, I mentioned how much I liked the OSU uniforms until a couple years ago when they purposely cut back on the silver. Why'd they do that? They looked better before ... I generally like that brighter red - that scarlet-red like Ohio State and Tampa Bay. Normal Crayon-Red is gross (see Chefs, Bugshuckers).

I was getting ready to make this very post. Their top four could easily be my bottom four. In fact, the Dolphins may well have the worst uni's in the league. Teal? Are you kidding me?

It's not teal. It's aqua or, for us oldtimers in the Crayola universe, aquamarine. It's a very fitting color for a team called the "Dolphins" in a city most famous for their beaches.

They took that color in the mid-1960s before "teal" became a trendy sports team color. It wasn't chosen by a bunch of marketing lemmings (see Carolina Panthers, Jacksonville Jaguars, etc.). It was chosen as a representative color of the local scene fitting for a team named after an animal that lives in the ocean.

That is Fugly (probably looks worse when you factor in brown and copper instead of black and white). The taped-up thighs make it look worse, something the fashion police in the NFL would not allow today. Any taping would have to match the color of what had been taped over.

FWIW, my top 5 current uniforms (their normal uni, not the alternates):

1. Dallas Cowboys. I hate saying this because I detest the Cowboys but the look is classic. It says Texas. It says "wild west". But it knows how to state it simply, like the Texas lone star. The metallic blue pants with the white jersies is both unique among the NFL and fitting.

2. San Francisco 49ers. Gold, naturally. The red made for a good contrast with the blue arch-rival Rams.

3. Oakland Raiders. They wore black before black was cool. If they'd adopted this look during the drug thug fashion trends of the 90s, I'd put them near the bottom but they came by it honestly. And, face it, if your whole persona is denizens of the Death Star, what other color should you be wearing?

4. New England Patriots. One of the few teams that actually improved on their previous uniform fashion. The numerals looks a little like soccer jersies and the Elvis impersonator on the helmet looks a little goofy but the colors work very well and even Elvis is probably an upgrade over the bent-over center (although as Massachussetts becomes more and more gay, perhaps a bent-over mascot would be better accepted).

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Okay, here's another one that the new uni is far better than the old ones because the old ones were hideous so they could go out there in tutus and it would probably be better than their old clothes. OTOH, they look like Raider wannabes and cheap immitations rarely impress. I'll give them credit for making pewter work as a uniform color as long as you weren't looking at Warren Sapp's fat ass. That this can be fifth on the list tells you how bad I think the rest of the NFL glorywear are dressed.

There is a story about how the Broncos chose their uniforms also. At the famous burning of the striped socks that took place at Bears Stadium in 1963, they paraded around 5 possible new uniforms for the Broncos, one of those being orange.

The owner at the time, as well as General Manager, made a trip up into the Rockies, while going over several business issues. While there, they viewed a "Denver Sunset". While all sunsets have some orange and blue to them, they remarked how the Yellow Setting sun against the Brownish mountains produced beautiful Red Orange sunset, set against the darkening Azure Blue sky. Hence the Red-Orange and Dark Royal Blue combo that was chosen for our Broncos.

Mitch Albom wrote about this when he was outraged over Denver's uniform change in 1997.

Even though you can critique Tampa's orange, if you've visited the area and know the climate, it was a perfect color offering for the city of Tampa; you know why they picked it.

As many have said, I'll take a true historical reason for a color combo vs some marketing douchebag fag who doesn't even know how hold a football, let alone please a woman.

Well, certainly, the orange color fits in Florida. The whole state is decorated in orange and some type of blue-green accent. The mistake the Buccaneers made was to accent orange with red and then put the little fairy pirate on the logo with the feather cap, the earrings and knife in the teeth. Talk about gay imagery! Other teams laughed at the Buccaneers because of the uniforms they wore and rightly so. They were embarassing.

I guess after the Miami Hurricanes (green), the Miami Dolphins (aqua) and the Florida Gators (blue), all the good accent colors for orange in the state were taken. Switching away from orange for them was a good move.

2. San Francisco 49ers. Gold, naturally. The red made for a good contrast with the blue arch-rival Rams.
Their unis were SO MUCH BETTER without the black, and with the scarlet-red instead of this deeper tomato-red.

The Montana era scarlet red+gold were mega-classic uniforms.

4. New England Patriots. One of the few teams that actually improved on their previous uniform fashion. The numerals looks a little like soccer jersies and the Elvis impersonator on the helmet looks a little goofy but the colors work very well and even Elvis is probably an upgrade over the bent-over center
Either of the earlier Pats uniforms were better than the current imo.

The more-red originals (see photo array, ↑ top of page) were awesome (bent-over center notwithstanding), and the mid-90s, royal blue with more red were better than these also. The current Pats unis, along with the just-discarded Chargers unis, the Houston dark-jersey unis and even the Bronco road unis - ALL LOOK ALMOST BLACK & WHITE from a distance. :oyvey:

Yeah - I love that scarlet red very much. And while their old tangerine and maroon unis were all wrong for football, they were a feast for the eyes imho.

The Texans unis are weird. They wear navy socks with their navy jerseys and it looks like crap, B&W from a distance. BUT - when they wear the white jersey with deep-red numerals, navy pants and deep-red socks ... HELLO! Beautiful ... The Texans should really wear the white jerseys at home.

And these different shades of red make all the difference imo. The Texans and newer 49ers red is a deep blood-red/tomato-red, and that's nice. Ohio State, old 49ers, Texas Tech and current Tampa Bay Bucs use that brighter scarlet-red, and that is wonderful.

.... and then there's the old-fashioned Crayola-crayon RED, boring and even ugly - of the Kansas City Chefs and Nebraska Cornjerkers. Blech ....

The Bengals Orange and Black is not my personal favorite, but the helmet with its faux-tiger logo is very very cool. The jungle motif of their stadium-level backdrop is awesome too with the grasses hiding the Tigers. The franchise really works their Tiger unis/motif hard ... here's a page where they announce their jersey and pants combos for every game of the upcoming year: http://www.bengals.com/team/jersey_colors07.asp

A guy on BroncoMania told me last year that the Broncos had made up orange pants prototype to go with the orange jersey ... and the navy blue swoosh up the side. My knees get weak when I think of how an all-orange uniform would rile up the Invesco crowd. Think about it ...

Remember in 2003, a MNF game against the Raiders at Invesco. They warmed up in blue jerseys and white pants. Then right before the national anthem, they changed into blue pants in the locker room and came busting out in ALL BLUE! When they came out, the crowd was so crazed they absolutely hyperventilated, and the team had imo the best first quarter ever, leading 21-0 after 15 minutes. (Best 1st half was vs. Cleve in 1980, best 2nd half, vs. Seattle in 1980).

Anyway ... let's do that again. The Chargers Monday Night game on October 7. Warm up in the orange jerseys and white pants ... and then come out for the anthem in ALL ORANGE!

I disagree; I thought the oprange pants ruled.

From 1968 to 1971 they wore the Red-Orange pants and 1978-79 they wore the regular orange pants. The red-orange pants were so cool looking and definitely better than the straight orange Morton wore. In 1971 we played all 7 of our home game in the Reddish Orange pants and it looked cool.

For those that think "corporate bull****" only exists today, we succumbed to corporate BS back in 1978. The Broncos don't admit this, but they changed the hue of the orange after our fabulous 1977 season from red-orange to straight orange.

Now why would they change them after "Bronco Mania" and "Orange Crush" had just swept the nation. We were the talk of the league and the talk of the nation.

Because the Orange Crush thing was so popular, there were many complaints that our uniforms weren't really orange, from announcers and other media types. Even reps at the Orange Crush soda company used to say, "well the uniforms aren't really orange.

So we succumbed and changed the orange tone after the biggest season in team history. Doesn't make sense.

Scroll down to page 2 of both documents and you will see a picture of Craig Morton in almost exactly the same stance, waiting for the snap. The 1977 photo is a game at Riverfront Stadium against the Bengals, and the 78 photo is a home game against Green Bay.

Look at the difference in hue on not just the uniform, but the helmet too. The darker roayl blue and duller enamel looked much better.

We really pussified our helmet by the late Elway years. It was sissy sky blue and held nothing in common with our mid 70's helmet, with the exception of the D.

Those 1968-77 jersies ruled. That is what we should be wearing today.

I dont think I am color blind or anything, but I can barely tell the difference between '77/'78 shade of orange.

IMO, not really a profound difference but a subtle shade variation

Personally - wasnt happy when I 1st heard of the uniform change back in '97. Of course winning a superbowl in them helped them grow on me.

But I do like the alternate orange jerseys so much that I use them 99% of the time in Madden.

We should have orange jerseys and use the blues as alternates.

Just when I think you can't be any more offensive you go and say something like this..........

AND TOTALLY REDEEM YOURSELF!

Seriousness aside, you're precisely right. The color scheme should have a connection to the city the team represents. The uni's should have a connection. The SB wins made a connection with the new unis, but I wouldn't be sad to see them shelved in favor of history and tradition.

I loved the orange pants in the 70's.

We should have orange pants for away games, orange jerseys for home games and all orange once a year for an ORANGE SUNDAY!

Our color should always be predominately ORANGE. (give us the alternate pit stains if you must...gulp)

For those who feel that we should 'UPDATE' from time to time. FINE!
change the stripes, fatten them add more, take away some. Go crazy with the socks... fiddle with the logo if you want (I like the new version).

Just give us back the ORANGE!

There was a time when it seemed like we were known by the 'Orange Crush' more than the 'Broncos'. It's THAT ingrained in our history. It was our color for three decades!

For those who jumped on the wagon during our SB years... I understand you don't have the affection for the Orange... but it's our history man!

it's not about a fashion statement... just emotional attachement I guess you would say.

I like the 65-66 Rawling jerseys the best!

Sans serif tackle twill numbering\nameplates solid in color. The Orange was a little darker too than the orange crush days with the distinctive blue bands on the shoulder/sleeves.

I always liked the old Buc's and Pat's uniforms.....pewter has no place on a uniform, period. It's just too frickin' weird looking, like QB's that wear the #5....there's just something wrong with that.

Speaking of the Pats, if you ever go to the store in Gillette Stadium, you'll find just as much merch featuring the old Pat logo as you will the Elvis one....I wish the Broncos store would do that.

I used to love the Saints uni's...till they went with gold numbers and totally black pants, that looks horrible.

B - The Broncos store does sell the old dark blue, reddish D helmet.....the problem is it goes for about $250.00.

Right on Star Wars Man!!

The idea that orange is a bad football color is made up by behind the keyboard tough guys and drama fags like Alec.

Orange is a ****ing great football color. First of all it is the number one color of fall, being used duiring the number one game of Fall.

Show me another color, on a pound for pound basis, that represents college football greatness more than orange. Understand I said pound for pound.

Orange is the primary university color for the Florida Gators, Miami Hurricanes, Tennessee Volunteers, Texas Longhorns, Oklahoma State Cowboys, Boise State Broncos, etc. There are plenty more kick ass programs that sport orange as the main university color.

People who think they're tougher or their favorite football team is tougher because of the jersey they wear are insecure internet fags.

Orange is one of the greatest football colors around.

You know that Denver has pretty sweet uniforms when about 40-50% of college football has uni's that have the same or similiar design as Denver's currently or at some point.
I'm not cracking on Denver uni's at all but don't you think that college football's jerseys might have something to do with Nike sponsorship?

Yes, sometimes NAVY and BLACK are better, and the Cowboys rarely-used Navy jerseys are better looking than their older royal blue jerseys, also rarely used.

AP, I mentioned how much I liked the OSU uniforms until a couple years ago when they purposely cut back on the silver. Why'd they do that? They looked better before ... I generally like that brighter red - that scarlet-red like Ohio State and Tampa Bay. Normal Crayon-Red is gross (see Chefs, Bugshuckers).

Pretty much ends and begins with Nike, since the college replicas cannot have names put on them and players cycle through numbers a Mike Doss #2 is now a Malcom Jenkins #2. So Nike sells fewer jerseys, how do you boost sales? Make new ones. Woody Hayes himself designed the classic Buckeye uni, on the sleeve was what was called "The Buckeye Stripe".

They did toy with it a few times in the past, and the font size has changed sometimes. But the almost always had the grey Buckeye Stripe. The current jersey was worn at one time in the 70's but not for long. They recreate the stripe pattern on the helmet and sides of the pants on the sleeve, that pattern looked good on the pants and helmet because it is surrounded by the silver/grey. The sleeve stripe doesn't have the same effect with red around it. Tressel heard the complaints but simply said you don't win or lose because of the color of your uniform. I'm sure Nike will switch them up again in few years.
