Hook it up DVI. You may not notice it if you dont have anything in HD on your computer but DVI is essentially HDMI without the sound data transmitted.

Sassy

DVI is just digital video instead of the classic common monitor that is VGA. It's unrelated to anything else ... for the router you just need an ethernet.

I have a DVI output on my video card, and a DVI input on my monitor .... I even have the cord. Should I plug it in? Would it work? Anybody?

Like I understand that language?
So...I just follow the instructions for VGA?

VGA is old.

DVI is new. (you want this)

Your motherboard/monitor/video card should have come with both types of connectors, and a VGA-to-DVI adapter if you need it.

It will make zero difference in setting anything up or how anything runs. It's analog vs. digital. Just hook it up like normal using the DVI connections. Easy as pie.

Sassy
08-08-2007, 11:35 AM
It doesn't look like there's an adaptor...just the cord for VGA (blue ends) and the in/out (green ends). Plus, the electrical cord.Hmmm....in other words, I'm guessing the DVI cord is different and comes separate?

Atwater His Ass

it should have come with your monitor if it has dvi. otherwise you'll have to purchase one.

and do you see a similar connection point on the back of your computer?

Rock Chalk
08-08-2007, 11:44 AM
Sassy, you have to look at your video card. If it is the normal monitor input thats VGA, otherwise it will be white (not blue) where you plug it in and have a bunch of slots instead of pins.

Its not frustrating. Just plug it in.

Sassy
08-08-2007, 11:51 AM

Rock Chalk
08-08-2007, 11:55 AM
OK Sassy, let me start simply.

Your video card is a piece of equipment on the inside of your computer. It has a place in the back of the computer that your monitor plugs into. Where you plug the monitor into the back of the computer, you have to look at that connection. If its blue, its a standard VGA plug in. If its white, its DVI.

If your monitor is one of the flat panels it should also have a USB connection wherre you can plug your monitor in via a USB slot. Below is an image of a video card that has both AND an S-Video input.

That just means that your monitor is compatible with DVI but you need a Video Card also compatible.

And Buff, plug it in DVI if you have it. Its a better signal and VGA is being phased out anyway.

I would honestly recommend just going with the colors and using trial and error, you realy cannot break anything.

They usually give you so many plugs and lines out of the box, and nothing should be in excess... I don't think.

You are going to need the adapter (vga-to-dvi) to hook it to the back of your computer then.

From what I can gather from your above posts these are your options:

1) Buy a DVI cable and adapter. Plug in to your monitor with the cord, and use the adpater to hook up to the back of your computer. If your monitor does not also have a vga plug in, this is your only option.

2) If you monitor has both vga and dvi, you can just hook it up with your old vga cable and call it good.

Just hook it up with the included VGA cable. The PC I got last november came with a DVI capable monitor and video card but no DVI cable, while I prefer DVI it wasn't like I was thrust into the stone age when on VGA. It'll still look worlds better if you're going from an old CRT or laptop to a nice widescreen LCD like I did.

As of now DVI and HDMI are still largely for A/V enthusiasts. They're wonderful techologies and I'm glad its becoming mainstream, but most of the stuff you'll use on a daily basis do absolutely nothing with it. Hook for PC up VGA and if you or a spouse/housemate have a 360 or PS3 consider using the DVI port for that if you don't have a high def TV already. Most sets will recognize the powered on device natively with no work from you.

Setting up a new PC isn't bad, its just matching colored ends of wire with the same colored ports while trying not to wind up with a knot that'd make a sailor frustrated. I recommend grabbing some twist ties and doing your wires up with them at needed intervals to get a neat bundle that'll stay out of the way after you've set everything up.

As far as wireless, any Windows XP or Vista system will be able to pick up wireless networks very easily on their own, you can simply pick and chose from them when in your wireless options window. Easiest way to get to it is by right clicking on the wireless network signal in your system tray (the lower right hand bar next to the time), a little monitor with waves coming out of it, and chosing "View Available Wireless Networks". It'll give you a list and you can chose yours (it'll likely be named the same as your router brand if you haven't changed it) and following the prompts from there. If you have a wireless card that doesn't use the built in XP or Vista wireless drivers it'll be only slightly more complicated, you instead right click on the appropriate system tray icon and do the same.

Ok...got it hooked up but not the internet stuff yet. (Or the printer...that's a different story. I already know I need to download drivers from HP so that can wait...I need to be online for that anyway.)

Dumb question here... is the cd that came with the monitor have to be installed... (it doesn't look like it from what I see on the desktop) or is it just info about the monitor , etc. I don't recall having to do that before...? )
Also, can I have one pc on dial-up and that one on wireless? Because right now the old PC is now hooked up upstairs on dial up and the new one downstairs...and ready to be hooked up to wireless. Both different connections so it should work ??

You dont need that CD for the monitor.

You can have both PCs on wireless provided you have a wireless router (which I assume you do) and a wireless card on both PCs AND the upstairs PC is close enough to the router to pick up a signal.

However, the answer to your question is yes. You can have one on Dial-up and one wireless though I suggest putting the upstairs on wirless and hardwiring the downstairs PC to the router that way you get high speed on both.

Sassy....Use the DVI if your monitor has a DVI input.

DVI (digital video interface) CAN be hooked up to most new HD tvs by getting a DVI to HDMI cable, and an audio cable.....and as said previously is HDMI without the audio that HDMI carries . (HDMI = High definition multimedia interface).
Imagine using a 60" plasma tv as your monitor, or even a middling 37 " tv.
(Personally I have a computer hooked upto my 65" tv in the living room. Very big for playing dvds etc.)

From the top.....what did you buy and what do you have for internet connection equipment? It sounds like you bought a new desktop PC and a wireless router of some kind.

I have some initial questions for you. The people here can easily get you up and running so that you have multiple PCs on a secure wireless network with shared folders and stuff if you give us more info. :)

1) Do you want to scrap the old PC or network it too (or at least long enough to get your stuff off it)?

2) Do you have DSL or a cable modem? Does it have a router built-in already?

3) If you plan on using just one PC then you can just turn off the wireless transmission on the router. You don't need it and you won't need to secure it.

I am confused by the "wireless box" thing.

Assume ATA is your modem for these purposes. Router connects to modem with CAT 5 (big telephone looking cable). If connecting to router via wireless from the PC then no cable is needed. Otherwise, the same big CAT 5 cable needs to be hooked from the PC to the router, generally in slot 1 (there should be a separate single slot on the router to plug into the cable modem).

Plug the router and cable modem into the wall socket. This is important as both need power. Your PC may or may not automatically connect to the wireless connection or if wired it should just automatically connect UNLESS your router requires some special setup.
