Yeah, I have been walking (without a limp, I might add) on a torn ACL all summer - putting off surgery so it wouldn't ruin my summer. Those things are weird. Before you have one, you'd think it would be excruciating. But I only even know it's torn because it clicks and pops all the time (I think that's caused by other stuff torn in there - not necessarily the ACL), and it hurts like hell if I put any lateral pressure on it. Oh, and because it's the second time I've torn it, and the orthopedic surgeon said, "Bummer, you tore your ACL." That's always a pretty good indicator.
I'm just saying that to illustrate that you don't know for sure until they do an MRI. But, a trainer would have a pretty good idea on the field, seeing how much give it has when they move it back and forth. If they've announced that they think it's nothing, the chances are that Antonopoulos took a look at it on the field, and didn't get that abnormal movement.

Let's think reallistically here - how much were we actually counting on this guy this year? He's in a system where we use a rotation and we're quite deep as well. He wouldn't even be a starting DE this year, more of a situational pass rusher.
Hope he's all right but even if he's out - we technically haven't lost anything but a body at this point.

that's a bright side outlook, but then there is also the fact that he was counted on to be a starter eventually, and explosive speed DE's aren't very effective without explosion and speed.

Broncos' first-round pick Jarvis Moss departed today's morning practice with a knee injury. The injury occurred about 9:35 a.m., but further details on the severity of his injury aren't known.
The No. 17 overall pick was taken off the field on a cart after injuring his left knee. The pass-rushing defensive end was injured in an individual pass-rushing drill. He attempted a spin move, planted his leg, then fell to the ground. He got to his feet, but was assisted to the cart.
Moss was drafted to give the Broncos some much needed help in its defensive pass rush. He signed a five-year, $18 million deal on July 28.

08-06-2007, 12:47 PM
This is significant. The lack of a pass rush is one of the reasons why we couldn't close out games and blew a lot of leads. Having Moss as a 3rd-down specialist would have helped becuase late on in games when teams go to their 2-minute offense he would be on the field the whole time even though he's not an every-down player...
...of course that's based on the feedback I've been seeing from camp this year - he looks like a genuine gem of a pass-rusher. He's still a rookie who has yet to play a down of even a preseason game so any sense of desolation we feel at his injury may have to be tempered with some reality...

For some reason I have a bad feeling it is an ACL, normally when you just plant and turn and then crumple to the ground its an ACL. This is just what I have experienced.

That's dumb. He was having a great camp and i'm sure they were counting on him to be a strong edge rusher (much like dumervil was last season). You never want to lose a first round pick to a knee injury.

Those boys at Harvard and/or Johns Hopkins need to get this ACL surgery down to an outpatient procedure that takes 3-4 weeks to recover from. I've had 3 knee surgeries and everytime they insist on drilling a channel through the two adjacent bones and then screwing in the replacement ligaments, it just makes me wonder if there isn't another way...maybe I'm just sick, it's Monday, and I'm not willing to accept anything like this! Hope he is ready for the season whatever it be.

worse yet, if it is an ACL he would be in a bad situation given what his strengths are....he is a speed edge rusher, and after an ACL injury its tough to get that explosiveness back

Not good.
Could be ACL, hopefully its minor and just a scare. In my football days, I had once hurt my knee after I planted my foot awkwardly. It turned out to be an MCL strain...so hopefully everyone is over reacting assuming its ACL at this point.
Guess we will wait and see. either way though, sounds like he is going to miss some time. Hopefully its not too bad.
And hopefully everyone else steps up. Makes me ill to think we were that reliant on a rookie DE who wouldnt even be an every down guy to make a profound difference in our pass rush.
We got a lot of new guys on the D line, hopefully we'll be alright.

It's almost there, compared to where it was. It used to be a solid year to even be a portion of your old self. You'd end up with a long scar on your leg, and the knee would never be quite what it was. Now, they do it all with a scope, and you are in and out the day of surgery. And you're doing most stuff within six months. God forbid, if it was an ACL, he should be good to go, easily, by next season's mini-camps. And unless the damage was extraordinary, he should be the same player he was before the injury.
That said, as RMT said, an MCL can be pretty painful (in my case, it hurt worse than the ACL). These guys can get back from that in a matter of a few weeks. Let's hope that's all it is.

Do we Really need so much training camp... I mean all the hitting and two a days helps in one sense but I just wonder if a team had the balls to do serious training and running plays but less hitting and then see if the added freshness gave better longterm results than wearing everyone down in training camp and injuring 20% of the team before the season starts as well as making the other half fade after week 11?
Who knows, maybe its worth a trade off to be a little less crisp the first couple of weeks and yet have all or most all of your guys healthy and in tune on week one! I hate this kind of news ... for any team ... and Moss was shaping up to be a real stud for us and now he's always going to have that little less speed that even a rehabbed ACL usually brings ... at least for the next two years. ... totally SUCKS !!!!

How is that dumb? What, because of the fact that he's a first round draft pick he's automatically an upgrade to what we have?
He's a situational pass rusher at best right now - a taller version of Elvis Dumervil. In fact, he's not even on Dumervil's level yet - Elvis proved to be a pretty damn good pass rusher for us last year. Thus far, what has Jarvis Moss done for us? Looked good in camp according to a few reports - should we annoint him the next Javon Kearse/Julius Peppers/Dwight Freeney?
C'mon dude - we lost a body so far. He's proven nothing other than "potential upside" - gimme a break. Most reports have Crowder ahead of all rookies in terms of overall ability but the fact is that NONE of them have played a down in the NFL yet.
So back to my point - if he's gone, we lost a 1st round pick that's done nothing yet and really was only going to contribute on passing downs. We still have Dumervil for that.
There's no need for some of these posters to start f'ing CRYING like god damn babies - "Oh woe is us, for we have possibly lost our first round pick"
Again, hope he's ok but there's really no need to sit on here and whine about how much we've "lost".

First of all, I was not crying about it, I was stating that the loss of a first round pick shouldnt be taken lightly. Our third down pass rusher was awful last year and Moss appeared to be a significant upgrade. This is worse than losing an obvious camp body. Moss was proving to be a disruptive pass-rushing force in practice and would have provided a threat on game day. And who is to say he wouldnt (couldn't) have put up similar numbers to Dumervil last season?

"Appeared to be" an upgrade. Appeared to be.
"And who is to say he wouldn't (couldn't) have put up similar numbers to Dumervil last season" - an undrafted free agent has just as much a chance at this no? Again, just because he's a first round pick who 'appeared to be' an upgrade doesn't mean that our season is lost and there's a need to cry about this. He's done nothing so far.
I guess what i'm saying is why are some of these posters putting so much stock into the guy? No reason to apply pressure to a guy that, lets face it, isn't going to come in on enough plays right away. Let this kid grow, the team is still fine. With or without Moss we damn well could be just as bad this season as we were last season - his draft position and the fact that he appears to be good (in practice no less) doesn't mean that we're automatically a top 10 pass rushing D.

i don't think anyone has the proverbial "triggers" to their heads over this....had it been Travis Henry or Champ I think the situation would have a much graver effect....however, the fact remains that Moss was going to be a solid contributor this year for one of our weakest units...if he is lost for the season it widens the gap that the D-line was looking to close....they were hoping to be an average to above average pass rushing line this year, now they drop down to below average again unless someone steps up
Time to call Simeon Rice.
Excellent first post!
Rice may have just seen his price rise. Damn-it!
