Broncos notes: Abdullah makes others take notice

ENGLEWOOD -- In a tight competition, the performance Denver Broncos safety Hamza Abdullah had Saturday morning could be invaluable.
Abdullah made a few nice plays, including an interception, and drew the attention of cornerback Champ Bailey.
“Hamza Abdullah probably had the best day of camp this year,” Bailey said.
Abdullah and Curome Cox are battling to be the team’s top backup at safety. Sam Brandon had that spot for most of last year, but he was released because of an injured knee. Assistant head coach/defense Jim Bates said Cox and Abdullah are performing well.
Veteran safety John Lynch praised Abdullah earlier this offseason, which surprised Abdullah.
“It took my breath away,” Abdullah said. “I just want to prove him right.”
Henry dinged
Running back Travis Henry said he suffered a hip pointer Friday, then aggravated it Saturday morning. He said it wasn’t serious, but he sat out many drills Saturday. With today off, Henry said he should be fine Monday.
“It’s normal, especially at the running back position,” Henry said. “Any play you can get nicked up.”
Marshall plan
Coach Mike Shanahan said he did not know if receiver Brandon Marshall, who hasn’t practiced during training camp because of a quadriceps injury, will return Monday.
“I told (strength and conditioning coach) Rich Tuten, I don’t want to see him until he’s ready to go and he feels like he can go through two practices,” Shanahan said.
Needed break
Shanahan canceled the afternoon practice after the Broncos practiced in pads in the morning. The coaches are demanding early in camp, expecting the players to know the entire playbook before the first practice. By the end of the first week, a break is appreciated.
“They’ll get a chance to rest a bit, go back through their playbook, and we’ll start all over on Monday,” Shanahan said.
