Elam misses former QB Plummer, who was his holder

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) -- With strong-armed Jay Cutler under center, it would seem impossible to find anybody at the Denver Broncos training camp who misses Jake Plummer.

Kicker Jason Elam does.

The Broncos' career scoring leader has struggled getting used to his new holders at training camp.

Twice this week, the 15th-year pro has missed three field goals in one practice as he adjusts to Cutler and punters Todd Sauerbrun and Paul Ernster holding for him.

"The last couple of years I had Jake Plummer and he was so good, he was a great holder," Elam said Friday. "He had really quick hands and got the ball down fast for me so I could have a real long look."

Elam isn't pointing fingers. He said it's just a matter of him adjusting to his new cohorts.

The Broncos and their fans aren't accustomed to seeing the three-time Pro Bowler struggle. He holds team records for most career field goals (368) and best career percentage (.802) as well as extra points made (568) and points scored (1,672).

Last year, he converted 27 of 29 field-goal tries for a franchise-best .931 percentage.

So, the crowds at camp and his teammates have been doing double takes as his kicks sail left and right.

Special teams coach Scott O'Brien said it's just a matter of working out the kinks, and Elam said he's not overly concerned, either.

"Everybody in the league has to deal with getting that operation down every year and getting the timing back, so I'm not worried about it," Elam said. "I'm sure it will come around real quick."

It's not like his mechanics are a mess or his mind muddled.

"I've got it surrounded, the last two days I've kicked I hit the upright twice," he said. "But I feel really, really strong. I feel probably stronger than I have the last couple of years, really good offseason workout. So, more than anything it's just a little timing issue. It's just completely me. I've got to get my timing back.

"It's not like I'm missing them 15 feet left or 20 feet right. I'm inches away from being right on."

Plummer was supplanted by Cutler as the starting quarterback with five games to go in 2006 and retired shortly after the Broncos traded him to Tampa Bay last offseason.

Elam has found himself in this position before, adjusting during camp to a new crew. He was spoiled by having Tom Rouen as his holder for eight straight seasons.

"I just knew what he was thinking. I had so much of a comfort level that the ball was going to be where I needed it to be," Elam said. "So, now I've had a bunch of different holders the last few years. It's not ideal. It's not what a kicker wants to go through. But it's what everybody has to deal with."

What made Plummer such a good holder was his uncommonly quick reflexes.

One time two years ago, against the Giants at the Meadowlands, Plummer mishandled the snap from Mike Leach but still managed to grab the ball and put it down in a split second for a stunned Elam to kick it through the uprights on one stutter step.

"He just shocked me how fast he got it down," Elam recounted. "But he was just so fast. His hands, he could spin the laces, he could get his hands out of the way. He was just really good."

Elam would like for the new holder to be decided by the team's third preseason game.

"Whoever it's going to be, I would probably push: please, let me have the guy who's going to be the guy so I can really start honing it on it and get into a real good rhythm," he said.

Well that settles it. Bring Plummer back! Surely Jake wouldn't mind being starting holder?

I'd bring Plummer back just so the same crap that happened to Cincy and Dallas doesn't happen to us.

I'm not overly concerned. He's coming off of a great year and it will just take some adjustment time.

Don't worry, with Jay at QB we will not be kicking to many field goals.

Elam will adjust.... and we don't need the drama that would undoubtedly ensue if Plummer was on the roster again (some fans would advocate his return to the starting lineup, y'know... :P)

Has Ramsey ever held before?

didn't Sauerbrun hold for Elam during Sauerbrun's first stint with the Broncos?

bring him back to back up culter since he knows the system and to hold for elam so denver can call more of those plays like the seattle game and since Ramey isn't doing so well

The holder situation has affected Elam's ability to kick accurately. If things don't improve, he could have an off year.

sack up Elam and just kick the damn ball

Damn there goes that fantasy pick...

Kickers are a strange sort.

I also thought Sauerbrun held for Elam last time in Denver.

Myself, I don't want Jay holding. He's got enough to think about. Plus the freaky injury factor of a rusher running into him exsist's.

#1... Plummer doesn't want to be a backup
#2... Plummer doesn't want to play for the Broncos anymore
#3... Plummer doesn't want to play football anymore; his "heart's not in it"...
#4... Plummer would want more $$ than anyone could justify for a backup QB
#5... why waste a roster slot on a holder for the kicker? ???

My thoughts exactly!!

Maybe We need a younger kicker, who is not such a bellyacher!

Jake did seem like a natural holding for kicks. There still time to find someone on the roster who can do an adequate job at it, imo. I think we should have Sourbuns hone his skills. Have Elam instruct him on exactly what he wants and practice the he77 out of it. The quicker he gets the ball set for Elam, the better Jason likes it, so...practice, practice practice. I'd like to see our S/T's excel this year for a change. Elams always kicked at a high level, no pun intended.;D

..or scoring many touchdowns. :wiggle:

Holders and long snappers are pretty key guys. Especially in the cold that you guys see a lot.

But I think Elam could make field goals with the ball tee'd up sideways. The guy is as automatic as it gets.

Awesome Elam, you perform poorly, so it only makes sense to blame the holder.

We should have a Plan B incase this is the year that Elam's level of play starts to fall off.

Kickers are lame, they really should never be quoted in the newspaper. Nothing good comes from it.

This thread is going 5 wrong directions - here is where we're all off track:

5) Jake was a great holder, but his salary was too high! Asking him to take snaps for a kicker for a career is like asking a ballerina to get into en pointe position (lift her leg) next to a fire hydrant to keep the dogs away.
4) Elam has always been a 'lame duck' when it comes to the media - maybe he's letting it really get to him physically too.
3) Ernster like Tony Romo just doesn't perform well under pressure! You ask him if he's ready and he'll ask 'when, right now?'.
2) Elam is as clutch as can be but ask any kicker why they missed and their response is as obnoxious and smells as bad as a garbage truck with the beeping alarm as it backs up to dump a load.
1) and last of all, telling a kicker to 'sack up' is like asking a broncos cheerleader to 'sack up' - just ain't gonna happen no matter how many you ask!

All in all - I'm not overly concerned.

That's what I thought as well.

Aw well, JE is on record for not liking change, he's delt with the new holder thing before and will have to do it again.

Oh no you didn't!!! You made me read this while I'm in football mode...

.... just throw salt in my eye lids and get it over with... :P

On a side note... my Pops childhood best buddies daughter was engaged to Elam (obviously before his current marriage) a few years back. SHE called it off.

Her dad asked her... "but why.....WHYYYYYY??? "

She replied... "he's a great guy but I just didn't love him".

He asked... "but couldn't you just love him a little bit.... just a little....little wee-bit??"
:giggle: :giggle:

When I found this out I wanted to call her to plead for Jason's case myself.

Just think of the tremendous bronco-get for a Bronco junkie like me that could have been. I still say she owes me tickets, autographes....etc....

What was she thinking!!! some people can be so selfish eh not thinking of others?!

oh well....
