Broncos extend Holland's contract
By Bill Williamson
Denver Post Staff Writer
After a quick re-evaluation of guard Montrae Holland, the Broncos decided they like what they see in the lineman and extended his contract on Friday.
The Broncos initially signed Holland in March to a one-year deal after he left New Orleans as a free agent. The extension keeps Holland in Denver for the 2008 and '09 seasons.
Holland's agent, Jonathan Feinsod, confirmed the extension but declined to disclose terms of the deal.
Holland will compete with second-year player Chris Kuper for the starting right guard job. Holland has been working behind Kuper throughout training camp.
The extension should give Holland and the team some security and continuity should he win the starting job.

Sign and trade??? Oops, wrong sport!
This is a head scratcher... Holland has looked very ordinary the times that I've watched.

This means ****. Probably insurance incase Myers leaves in FA.

That makes no sense. He is behind Myers on the depth chart right now it would appear (when Hamilton didnt practice, they put Myers in there with the starting unit instead of Holland). Why would he be extended?

It means a bit more than ****. If all they saw in him was an ok second unit guy they wouldn't have given him two more years, you can get that out of a lot of people without nearly the commitment.
Its good news because by the camp reports he hadn't looked that impressive so far. I'm sure the coaching staff has a better eye for performance evaluation though and they saw enough to extend him. I don't think he'll beat Kuper out for first team but he'll be a solid backup and I wouldn't be surprised if he sees action in goal line situations. Maybe even as a worthwhile replacement if Hamilton can't play bigger and stronger than he has in the past?

Holland was outperformed by a second day rookie from Bloomsburg and lost his job to him. I seriously doubt the guy offers and starting potential down the line.
It's nice to have him extended, as a back-up that's fine. He won't start.

??? Makes very little sense. Perhaps they thing of him as a mauler that can plow a lane in short yardage.
Kind of off topic, but nobody has really mentioned the fact that our O is doing decent and they're really not trying to take our DLinemen down. Very limited on the cutblocks. They were talking about this on the radio earlier and it's a very good point. Our Dline rarely faces real blocking b/c we won't cut our own guys.

The most telling thing was this morning when Hamilton was out. They put Myers in to replace him even though Holland played left guard in New Orleans. I don't think he's a "bad" player by any means. I just think he's backup material. If they are satisfied with him over the other backups, then that's fine, but he won't start.

Depth charts after a week mean nothing. Maybe the only reason they have him behind Meyers is because they want to see what Meyers can do.

I think it means Meyers is the C of the future and Eslinger is toast.

That rookie turned out to be pretty damn good. I wouldn't hold that against Holland.
Not sure why he would agree to an extension though. It seems like he has little shot of starting in Denver so why would he be happy with staying on the bench?

I'm not saying Jahri Evans is bad, I'm saying that's bad for Holland to lose to a guy who came in as a second day guard who wasn't expected to start.

It could also just be that Myers knows the scheme better because he's been with the team longer and is the technical backup to Hamilton and so they want that to progress like it should.

I like Greg a lot, and I really am rooting for him - just since I've got to see him play at Minnesota throughout his time there and he's a perfect fit for us - but maybe he just doesn't have "it" - if he hasn't been mentioned by SoCal and Kaylore really, he probably isn't worth mentioning at all.

Well, Holland is an RG, so why slot him in at LG when he's new to the system? But it certainly is interesting to see this happen so fast.

I thought Holland was an RG at NO.

When he was first signed, the talk was about having larger O Linemen to get more push in the red zone/goal line.
Or was that George Foster? ;D

Apparently, dude has some push. I see the guy is Florida State guy, maybe that's the deal.

You're basing that on what you think while the guys who just handed him a two year extension are much more experienced and get (well) paid themselves to evaluate talent and make these kinds of decisions. Who do you think is the better talent evaluator?
For all we know its much like Sam Adams and Travis Henry getting afternoons off. They saw enough of Holland already to know he can handle the competition he'll face on Sundays, so instead of giving him reps with a first team he won't even be playing with short of injury they let him learn the system with the second stringers and give Meyers the shot to impress them. Meyers already knows the system, he should be doing well against our 1st team DL if he's going to have any real future here.
Everyone is so quick to take the first week of camp as damning indictments against a player, or lock someone into a roster spot. We haven't even gotten to first cut downs yet. Give it time before you start assuming who is and isn't going to contribute next year.

Didn't Holland play tackle in NO too? I'm pretty sure he did. We have a few backups that can play different positions if need be, which is good.
Montrae will be the starter week 1.

After a quick evaluation, the Broncos like what they see in guard Montrae Holland.
Friday, the team extended the guard's contract. He was initially signed to a one-year deal in March as a free agent from New Orleans. The extension keeps Holland in Denver for the 2008 and 2009 seasons.
Holland said Saturday he appreciated the Broncos' willingness to extend his deal so early in his tenure.
"Basically, I guess I showed them something for them to want to keep me around here a while longer," Holland said. "I came here on a one-year deal with the idea of trying to show them what I could do. They must have liked enough of what they saw to offer me a three-year deal. And I took it."
Holland has been
working behind Chris Kuper at right guard, who has been with the first team all camp. The motivating factor for extending the contract on both sides is to give Holland and the team security and continuity should he win the starting job.
"It's a competition, whatever happens, happens," Holland said. "Chris is a great young player. He does a lot of things well. All we can do is come to practice every day and work and let the coaches decide. The contract has nothing to do with it."

That's a good signing. I love tieing guys up to longer term deals. The Broncos need to try to lock Foxworth or Paymah up to long term deals along with DJ.

He gets noticed. he got a award in college as the best lineman no? and he got noticed in the NFLE. I think his game is lacking strength. as far as technique i think it is pretty strong.
