ENGLEWOOD – Denver Broncos linebacker Warrick Holdman was scheduled to be released from the hospital today after suffering a spinal cord concussion on Thursday, coach Mike Shanahan said.

Shanahan said Holdman did experience some numbness this morning. Holdman was injured during a drill Thursday morning. He was held overnight at Sky Ridge Medical Center in Lone Tree for observation.

“Not a lot, but a little bit,” Shanahan said of the numbness.

Holdman was down on the field for more than five minutes Thursday, but regained feeling in his arms and legs after about 40 seconds, Shanahan said. No timetable for Holdman’s return has been set.

Holdman is one of the players competing for the starting strongside linebacker position. Linebacker D.J. Williams said a few Broncos visited Holdman on Thursday night.

“It’s not like we just work with each other, we’re a family,” Williams said.

Great news!!! Glad he's doing better!

I know it will probably take some time to get back up to par to be back on the field. But, being released is great news!

Yeah, I thought you were saying he was being released from the team, haha. That's good news though. I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see him til about week 6 and is put on the PUP list.

Spinal cord concussion is a transient disturbance of spinal cord function, with or without vertebral damage and no demonstrable pathologic changes, that results from a rapid change in velocity following trauma, and resolves within 48 hours. In a retrospective review of patients with spinal injury referred to a tertiary care center, spinal cord concussion was observed in 3.7% of patients. Thirteen cases are presented. A variety of clinical presentations may occur, all of which can be explained on the basis of the magnitude or direction of acceleration of the spinal cord. The cervical cord is most commonly affected, but concussion can occur at any level of the spinal cord. Spinal cord concussion is often associated with pre-existing vertebral abnormalities that result in narrowing of the spinal canal or areas of hypermobility.

It looks and sounds really bad but you can recover very quickly from this sort of injury. It is the type of injury though that if it became chronic would mean the end for any player. But don't think for a minute Holdman is done for year. He may be but there is a really good chance he will be fine.

A change to the thread title would be nice. I almost didn't click on this, fearing the worst after the Al Wilson situation.

News tonight said he is "day to day" to return to practice. I would err on the safe side if it were me
