Just a one year deal huh? I guess it's more of a mutual benefit to both sides. Oakland gets a backup plan for Russell and someone to mentor him for a year, Culpepper gets a chance to start and show he can still play so he can land a better deal somewhere else next year.

0-16 c'mon faid you can do it!

i actually think it wasn't a bad signing for Oakland

hurts Jamarcus' leverage a bit....they aren't forced to start him Year 1...Culpepper gets to play with a chip on his shoulder with a not-so-bad #1 WR in Jerry Porter

in my opnion, i'm not sure who brought this up, they should have tried to bring him in last year

I'm not so sure this really hurts Russell's levearge too much. Oakland obviously isn't committed to Culpepper long term and I'm sure they are dieing to get theri #1 draft pick QB into camp to start learning.

If it came down to it, if Russell held out for the entire year (won't happen, just saying) I think that would hurt Oakland more than him. He'll get his money, and Oakland would have lost a valuable year to educate the rookie.

I was listening to Sirius' NFL channel and apparently Culpepper was offered a three year deal elsewhere, but he was adamant on getting only a 1 year deal, so he passed it up and went to Oakland.

Jamarcus needs to get his act together.

Jacksonville offered him the 3 year, $15 mil deal, but he obviously declined.

Anyone else think Daunte mentoring someone is as hilarious as I do?

"Alright, Jamarcus, what you want to do is drop back and throw the ball as far as you can and let Randy Moss do all the work... what? he got traded? Alright, Jamarcus, what you want to do is drop back and stare like a deer in the headlights until you get sacked or throw it as hard as you can into groups of defenders."

So WoundedKnee is now a Faider? Not a very smart idea considering the Faider's turnstyle O-line. How long will it take him to get hurt? Hope he's got good insurance.

I thought McClown was going to keep the seat warm for JaMarcus? Speaking of JaMarcus, how in the world wasn't a contract worked on before he was drafted. Manning and Karr already had deals before they got drafted. The Texans did the same thing last year. Then again, we are talking about Greasy Al.

I like the signing.... Can you imagine the pounding he is going to take? I wonder what the over/under is until he goes snap behind that so called O-line.

Aaron Brooks had more sacks than completions last year in the home opener. Seriously.

Major bad soap opera approaching for Raiders fans.

a) Josh McCown should have this job.

b) the starter from last year (their reason for skipping Cutler and Lienert) is still on the roster.

c) Mr has been - could be is now in the fold.

d) Their "glory boy" is way on the outside looking in, and by the looks of current contracts like Landry and Peterson they are going to mortgage their future on their #3 QB this year.

e) a new coach who knows the last coach was given 1 year to succeed.

BOOM! APOCALYPSE! BLACK AND SILVER IMPLOSION!

Major bad soap opera approaching for Raiders fans.

I think you're putting way too much importance on several things.

a) Josh McCown should have this job.

Josh McKown hasn't done enough in this league to be handed any job. If McKown earns it, great. Bringing in competition for him, however, is in no way unreasonable and is, in fact, a good thing.

b) the starter from last year (their reason for skipping Cutler and Lienert) is still on the roster.

Actually, Aaron Brooks is off the roster. He was the starter until he was sidelined by injury. When Brooks came back from his injury, he walked right back into the starting job. I presume, then, that you're talking about Andrew Walter. Why is his presence on the roster a bad thing?

c) Mr has been - could be is now in the fold.

Again, how is Culpepper being in the fold a bad thing? The guy signed a contract that is very low-risk from Oakland's perspective. He was, at one point, one of the more highly thought of passers in the game. Granted, there's a HUGE question mark as to his health (and his ability to adjust to a scheme that requires him to read defenses quickly)... but does that mean simply having him in training camp is a bad thing?

d) Their "glory boy" is way on the outside looking in, and by the looks of current contracts like Landry and Peterson they are going to mortgage their future on their #3 QB this year.

And if JaMarcus Russell fulfills his potential, who will really care? I don't think that there are a bevy of Bengal fans who secretly lament the year that Carson Palmer rode pine behind John Kitna.

e) a new coach who knows the last coach was given 1 year to succeed.

True to an extent, but totally overstated. Shell got canned as much (if not more) for the fact that he'd completely lost his team as he did the final record.

BOOM! APOCALYPSE! BLACK AND SILVER IMPLOSION!

I'd say that you could argue that a 2-14 season that featured the coach fighting with the front office, a star player who quit, an offense that had more 3 and outs than not, and a receiver who was benched over a dispute with his coach would count as the actual apocalypse/implosion.

The stuff that you're citing above, however, is pretty silly when you get right down to it: "The Raiders are having an open competition for the quarterback spot! And the brought in another quarterback to compete for it! Oh, no! What are they thinking?"

Like I said... silliness.

am I the only one that thinks this is a great signing for the faiders, and bad for us?

I mean the year Peyton threw for 49 tds all the rest of dante's stats were comparable or better to peytons. and before anyone brings up the fable that it was all moss, remember that was the season where moss's hammy was sore so he'd play the first series but was simply a decoy the majority of the game. plus you don't complete ~70% of your passes throwing deep to moss all game.

there's definately still some question marks about dante's game and health. but if he can regain his pre-injury form (or season before the season he got injured anyways) and the faids line can give him any time, then I think this signing puts the faid right back in contention for the division title (sure sucks to say that).

the raiders should have one of the best ds in the league next year. with lamont jordan and joey porter they have a couple decent offensive targets. not sure who else is left on their recieving corp, but they had a ton of potential just before they brought in moss. if culpepper returns to form (might be a big if but it sure aint impossible) their O should be at least middle of the pack. that should be plenty with their D to win some games.

consider that we have question marks at literally every position save for javon and champ's, and the unknown of the norv turner effect on the chargers, and I think the raiders are right in the thick of things all of a sudden.

I must have missed Cuttler and Leinart facing off in the Super Bowl.

What you say makes sense. We should never underestimate the Raiders, even if they are the worst team in the NFL.
