Rogue Ref May Blow Whistle
July 22, 2007 - 8:25 am
New York Daily News -
Federal authorities believe the referee at the center of the betting and game-fixing probe rocking the NBA will cooperate with investigators - and possibly name other officials or players involved in the scandal, law enforcement sources told The New York Daily News.

Saddled with large gambling debts, Tim Donaghy allegedly used mobbed-up bookies to place thousands of dollars in bets on games over the past two seasons, including contests he officiated, the sources said.

Two of the bookies are expected to be arrested this week after Donaghy, who has resigned from the NBA, surrenders to authorities in New York as early as Tuesday, the sources said.

New details of the growing scandal emerged yesterday and painted a troubling picture of the 40-year-old Donaghy. The so-called family man, who hid his frightening temper and shady associates from public view, has been arrested twice for erratic and threatening behavior.

Is there anything yet to say there WERE other refs and players or is the author just saying that when he spills the beans, something like that could possibly exist?

Law enforcement sources seem to think that there are more people involved, and specifically mentioned players and refs.

I can only imagine how badly the Knicks would have sucked if they didn't have refs throwing the games for them.Hilarious!

Quite frankly, I hope it blows up in Stern's face. The NBA has been a pile of rubbish for a while now and needs to be cleaned up.

Its no wonder why the San Antonio Spurs are called the San Antonio Sterns in many circles. This is getting ugly. A radio host had a good point yesterday. While its unlikely the NBA fixed the playoffs for the Spurs, you can't flat out say thats untrue anymore when you have a ref cheating.

I am now 100% sure that the ref's had something to do with the Mavericks getting their azzes handed to them by golden state in the playoffs.... Makes sense to me:rofl: :wiggle: :deadhorse :stirstir:

Yeah, but fixing and point shaving are two different things, IMO. Some people think the NBA is pre-determined by somebody like Stern, thus making it the same as professional wrestling. Point shaving is an official, or officials, doing bad things on their own to line their own pockets.

My point is, do I think the NBA (i.e., Stern, etc) fix outcomes to push an agenda, make a team popular, etc? No.

Do I think this Donaghy guy is guilty? Yeah, probably. And I wouldn't be surprised if others were involved.

Also, unrelated, but not really worthy of its own thread -- USA Basketball Blue vs. White scrimmage on FSN right now, live. Good times had by all.

The best thing that can come from this is the NBA will get some better, more consistent officiating. That's all I want, and if it means that many of the games I"ve watched and been emotionally involved with turn out to be a pharce then so be it.

The thing I have a hard time believing, though, is that players were involved. In order to have an impact on a game they have to be a pretty good player, and good players make a ton of money already. Why in the world would a player risk all that money, and not to mention jail time, and get involved in something like that?
