If Vick is involved it would be a no brainer to target Vick himself. Vick has much more to lose than the average dogfighter. Never the less, i dont care how the feds get these assholes, just so as long as they are brought to justice.

I don'
t see what the problem is with what Emmitt said. I imagine the feds are going to go after the very top on this. I personally think Vick is right up there at the top. He has been doing this since 2001 and he has lots of money. I'll bet he is right up there at the top. If he isn't than he better squeal to save his ass.

Yeah I don't see what the problem with what he said either. I thought for a second the article was him saying it was all a conspiracy to set up Vick or some weird defense like that. But he seems to be saying rational things.

"Now, granted he might have been to a dogfight a time or two, maybe five times, maybe 20 times, may have bet some money, but he's not the one you're after. He's not the one you're after, he's just the one whose going to take the fall -- publicly."
The old he-only-attended-20-dogfights-what's-wrong-with-that defense. Brilliant.
Emmitt was so used to closing ranks for the rapists, wife beaters, crackheads and heroin addicts on his old Cowboy teams, he took time away from his College HOF induction to protect a violent sociopath like Michael Vick. What a guy.
"From an athletic standpoint, from an endorsement standpoint, from an investment standpoint, from a business standpoint, those doors are opening. The question is now, do you want to do the same old junk you've been doing for 18 or 20-something years, or do you want to step into the real world of business and handle your business like you're supposed to handle it?"
How about from a common human decency standpoint, Emmitt?

"He's the biggest fish in the whole doggone pond right now, so they're putting the squeeze on him to get to everyone else," Smith said.
So???

Like it or not... when you sign a 100 million dollar contract, you become filthy rich and you get a little more attention then somebody who makes 20 grand a year and is known only by a few neighbors. For every pro sports player that is being made an example of there are 10 that get preferencial treatment. I don't feel sorry for Vick at all. All I need to do is picture him slamming a dog against the ground until it dies. Sick! Sick! Sick!

No Emmitt, they already put the squeeze on the little fish to get to Ron Mexico. This is the end game, not the build up. Ron should have hired Ray Lewis to teach him how to pay off a little guy to take the fall, looks a little to late for that now.

I don't think it would serve Vick well to "squeal" to save his ass. If he does it may big a bigger mistake than what he has done so far. He will be messin' with the wrong crowd of people if he turns on them. It would likely not be good for his health. They kill dogs and people without remorse.

its probably all those years of having team mates like -"how many pounds of dope?" haley and "i paid off the guy i attacked with scissors while i was on probation" irvin. that give emmit this mentality.
just attending one of these sadistic shows should be a felony.
and vick is the top of the chain here, like john gotti. remember no matter how thuggish the witnesses are against vick....
vick supporters say no jury will believe them....the jury believed an admitted murderer sammy the bull and convicted gotti.

When I read the title of this thread I thought I was going to read about Emmit Smith defending Vick. But after I read the article, I don't see where he defended him. Now, he didn't bash Vick, which is why I guess people are jumping on him. It seems like most people have to pick a side on some issues. If somebody is kind of in the middle, people want to act like that person is on the other side of the argument. I'd say that Smith is towards the middle on this issue, but he's certainly not on the other side. And we have to remember that these are just a few quotes. Smith may have made quotes where he acknowledged Vick's wrong doing. The writer may not have used those quotes. That's not to imply that the writer had an agenda to make Smith look like he was on the other side of the argument. I wouldn't say that the article even puts him on the other side of the argument.

A dogfight or two?
According to the indictment, Vick was in the middle of everything from 2001 until the raid on his property. He purchased a piece of property. Then he built sheds for training dogs and staging fights. Then he built a tall fence to block views of the operation. Then he built the house for the people taking care of the dogs. Vick turned the property into a big dogfighting operation. We know that Vick just executed 8 dogs right before the raid three months ago, and probably hundreds since 2001 that they can't prove.
Emmitt says he "may have bet some money." Is that all? Incredible spin!!

I see a few problems with what Emmit said. The biggest to me is he seems to think that it's not that big of a deal to go to a dog fight 1 or 20 times. He is also retarded if he thinks they are using Vick to get to someone else. Vick is the main guy they are going after. Finally why does Emmit thinks he is so smart and important that he needs to tell us what is really going on?

So they are only going after Vick for financing a dog fighting ring because he is a big name? So if they found a substantial dog fighting ring being financed by some no name bum they wouldn't go after him? Are you kidding me?
He would have an argument if we were talking about going after Vick for only attending a dog fight....but we are talking about a guy that appears to be one of the king pins in the dog fighting business given the operation he was financing with 60+ dogs along with having the fighting ring on his property. Give me a freaking break Emmitt. How stupid are you? Apparently the answer is "very"....

I agree that Emmit was a warrior on field and a very good running back. I just think he yardage totals and the fact that people want to recognize him amongst the greatest ever are largely because of the offensive line he played behind. I do not believe he is in the same league as Barry Sanders, Walter Peyton, Eric Dikerson, Jim Brown, etc.
I am sure he great person, but his comments were uniformed and ill-advised.

In the prime of the Cowboys offense he would get 2 to 3 holes per game where he would run straight ahead without making a single move and would be 10-20 yards downfield before the first finger was laid on him....and that despite not being an explosive fast back by any stretch. When you are spotted 20-40 yards per game for doing virtually nothing it is tough not to post big numbers.

He is. He dominated his position and won Championsips for years like Brown. He played like the ultimate warrior in Payton. He's as much a part of the group you listed as any of the others. Dickerson and Sanders, much like Davis, are great runningbacks. But I wouldn't put them in the same class as Smith, Payton, and Brown on a football field.
Emmit could very well be right.
The FBI are looking for headlines.

Payton was the anti-Emmitt...Played on the worst teams and behind some of the worst lines all time and still posted great numbers.
It is a shame that Emmitt's name even get mentioned in the same category as Sweetness.
Another good example of how he was the anti-Emmitt is that when Payton scored a TD he would always throw the ball up to the fans in the stands despite back in the day they had to pay a fine for doing that....Emmitt made sure he always kept the ball so he could sell them some day in his dad's card and memorabilia shop back in Florida...One guy giving, one guy a selfish me, me guy.

He might be un-informed. He's probably attended events like the one Vick appears to have hosted. He also might be right. And even if he is right about the FBI and their pursuit of Vick and his cousins, what's so wrong with it? It's becoming more apparent to me that animal fights to the death...be it dogs or cock fighting are culturally accepted things in other places. If the FBI's pursuit can result in awareness then it's not such a bad thing that Vick gets the beat down in the process. While this may be an accepted pratice in other countries....it's not here.

did any of them have jobs? Probably not...other than training Vick's dogs
these are the types of things that will become clear during the trial and will eventually sink Vick....whether he killed dogs or not...he was the financial backing for this project
it has nothing to do with colors....i think that was pretty clear with the Duke case....white or black, when you do wrong and you are "famous" or high profile enough to use as deterrence, the law is going to punish you....
